Leatherface of Evil

Where does evil dwell? In a run-down house in the woods of Texas. And a group of hippy teens find that out in the worst way possible. They just happen to run into Leatherface. A murderous genuine psychopath who speaks only in howls and runs around with a chainsaw and a wheres a mask of skin. And when you think it cant get any worse, you meet his equally sick family and a grampa you have to see to believe. Leatherface is a lot more evil and terrifying because he seems more real and believable then Jason and Freddy because they surround him with demented, sadistic clues to his present such as rooms chock full of decorations of human bones and pieces of skeletons all over his house. It brilliantly shows how sick he is and why he is like this. It makes you feel like he is living next door and what it would be like to have him staring and walking towards you in a dark room. Best movie ever made, but made cheaply. BUT that is a big part of the greatness. The acting is great and believable. Scary, violent, sadistic and phenomenal.

WEIRD CAN BE FUN

The title misled me into expecting a cheesy pseudo-comedy about the tired subject of female exploitation in work places. Then, a bit of reading pointed towards a plot based on maverick overtones of S&M (disclaimer: not really my bag), which had me expecting a psychosexual serving of "Working Girl" (that Griffith humdinger from the 80s) with bondage thrown in for good measure.
Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised to be proved mostly wrong on both accounts.
As for the hackeneyed theme of female exploitation, the protagonist's initial willingness to acquiesce to her boss' punitive ministerings could have easily made her a victim of an employer/a man/a senior. Instead, this is quite convincingly shown to be her mode of entry into adulthood, allowing her to develop the inner resources to be a self-determined woman relentless in the pursuit of what and whom she wants.
As for bondage, the depictions are not really bad at all (albeit occasionally guilty of needless nudity, imho) and in fact for better or for worse challenge our pre-conceived notions of sex. Anyone involved in a relationship knows that an essential ingredient is variable power balance -- it's inevitable, despite some people's claims that they have a completely equal affiliation. These power shifts help keep romance vibrant, most likely resulting in wisdom and self-acceptance. What men often confuse as strength -- stoicism, aloofness, obstinacy -- are, more often than not actually weaknesses leading to ignorance, avoidance and ultimate demise. Paradoxically, it's in hapless vulnerability that we actually discover what we're capable of, being able to develop emotional resilience and learning to express desire, sexual or otherwise. Gylenhaal's Lee Holloway embodies this weakness-as-power concept to the T, making an appealing case for growth by any means necessary.
In a nutshell, a delicious, fast-paced, wonderfully filmed, off-beat romantic "comedy". Not something I'd necessarily go out on a limb to buy or own, but definitely worth an enjoyable evening's rental. Twice.

Complete masterpiece

This film is one of the best I have ever seen. Put simply, it is a work of genius. There have been a number of bad reviews about this film and it lost almost $60m at the box office (nevertheless, it still grossed a fairly respectable $45m). When I saw the DVD I couldn't understand why the film lost money at all.
The main prejudices against this film seem to be that it carries the "Final Fantasy" title. Excited fans of the gaming series were seriously dissapointed because this film has absolutely nothing to do with any of the games and is in a completly different style to them. This isn't surprising, because the games are incredibly complex and their stories would eat up hours of screen time. Fans of the game just did not have the foresight to enjoy it as a seperate movie. I had not played the games upon viewing and so could afford to be more impartial.
The rendered characters are incredible; for computer geeks it's worth buying the DVD to see Dr. Aki Ross's (the main character) hair blowing in the wind.
The storyline is as deep as you want it to be- it works on many levels, ultimately dealing with spirituality/life and death issues. On the other hand, it can be enjoyed solely as an action movie. Another great feature is the music, which is some of the best work I have heard- particularly the end credits/love scene piece "The Dream Within".
There is not a great deal of character development, and this upset critics. Nevertheless, there is still feeling and the viewer does get attached to most of the characters.
You simply HAVE to watch this film once. It really is nothing like anything that has gone before it. Although it has not proven to be the end of human actors as predicted, it has definately paved the way for other CGI (computer generated) films and has set the standard. Even if you are not interested in the spiritualist plot, you can simply be entertained by the action and humourous banter between the two army comrades, Neil and Jane.
Overall, this film is excellent. It was a real shame that it did not perform well at the box office, but in future years it will probably be looked back upon with respect and as a classic, it is such a trendsetter.
The DVD has some great features which help buff the storyline up a bit. I would definately reccomended this to all.

WOW!

Witch Hunter Robin is an amazing anime! I read the other reviews for it and saw people compaired it to X-Flies and such. The very first thing that came to my mind when I saw Witch Hunter Robin...was how it reminded me of the Le Femme Nikita TV series. The relationships between the characters...the characters themselves. I can't even find the words to say how wonderful this anime is...but I wanted to give another perspective on a show it relates to. :D

5 Stars is not enough

Definately an unconventional thriller. Duguay's slow but heated pacing throughout the movie was well appreciated. This allowed us never to expect when someone would die, or get blown up. Quinn's portrayal of Carlos' hatred was dead-on. His unpredictability and seething brashness was surely a reflection on the real Carlos (who by the way killed French cops in the '70s as Quinn did the KGB in this movie-by distraction).
