Enjoy The Film Even More By Doing A Little Research!

For those truly interested in what Welles' original version of "The Magnificent Ambersons" would have been like, I strongly recommend Robert Carringer's "The Magnificent Ambersons: A Reconstruction" and Peter Bogdanovich's "This Is Orson Welles". Both books provide considerable detail regarding the significant re-editing and re-shooting which took place on this film. What remains in the released version of Welles' second film is astonishing, but much of the story's logic was lost in the re-cutting, as was important character motivation. Exactly why did the Ambersons lose their fortune? What propelled George to rebuff Eugene? Welles' original version answered these questions and presented an incredible vision of a world overrun by industry. The destruction of this original version of the movie is simply the greatest injustice done to American cinema. Alas, we can still marvel at the film's beautiful performances, the gorgeous "snow ride" scene, the astonishingly realistic "kitchen" scenes and Welles' incredible narration. By all means, watch this movie, but do some reading about what it was meant to be and then use your imagination to see the greatest American movie ever made.

A fantasic film.

I just finished watching this performance on my locas PBS station. Before I saw this video, I had not heard or seen much of Bobby Darin. My father called my in to watch it and I throughly enjoyed it. I had heard him sing songs like, Mack the Knife, Beyond the Sea, and Splish Splash, but was really impressed at how versatile his singing was. I never realized how talented he actually was.
In the film, he was very enthusiastic. He had a good band with him and he played several instruments himself. He even made the audience laugh at times with his humor. This video really shows that Bobby Darin was on top, all the way to his untimely death.
He put on a very good performance and performed a good variety of music. As much as I enjoyed it, I think any Bobby Darin fan would like this video. I will definatly be buying this video and it is well worth the price. It's the kind of performance that I wouldn't mind watching many times. Bobby Darin was one of, if not the best singer this world has ever known and this video does an excellent job in showing that. The more I think about the film, the more I like it.

Verdi - Il Trovatore / Levine, Milnes, Marton, Pavarotti, Metropolitan Opera - movie DVD cover picture

This Il Trovatore is with Sherril Milnes, Eva Marton, Dolora Zajjick, Luciano Pavarotti, conducted by James Levine at the Met in 1988 on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Dolora Zajjick is riveting as the gypsy mother and Pavarotti's rendition of Di quella Pira blows recent recordings by other current tenors to smithereens.
Deutsche Grammophon's audio and video quality is superb--if only all the opera DVD's were this good I'd be in opera heaven. The DVD releases by DG also come with very good printed documentation.
Highly recommended.

Dancer in the Dark (New Line Platinum Series) - movie DVD cover picture
A truly character-driven film...

Dancer in the Dark is a sad, but beautiful comparison of the basic difference between strong and weak people, and the resulting tragedy when circumstances throw them together. Selma, the single-mindedly devoted mother, is as desperate for money as Bill, the police officer who is her landlord and friend. But their motivations are vastly different. Selma works long and hard, racing against her eventual blindness to earn enough money to allow her son to have a preventative operation that will save his sight. She must deny herself and her son many material things in the process, but to spare her son from the stress she faces, she resists explaining why she cannot even buy him birthday presents. Bill, on the other hand, has allowed his spoiled wife, Linda, to overspend to the point that he has exhausted his inheritance and fallen deeply into debt. Yet he lacks the strength to deny his wife in any way, or even to admit that he can no longer support her every whim.
The greatest triumph in the depiction of these characters is a skillful step away from all-good/all-evil typecasting. In the beginning, Bill and Linda do some genuinely good things for Selma and her son. Bill's incomprehensible decisions are made out of a weak attempt at self-protection, not outright ill-will. And even Selma makes questionable choices (and, yes, mistakes). However, even in the worst circumstances, she is never distracted from what is important, following it through regardless of the cost. While Bill victimizes others to protect his own image, Selma protects even those who do not deserve protection by remaining true to herself and to her promises. The result is tragic, but it is the only result that could possibly be reached by these characters. The effect is beautifully accented by Bjork's natural charm and excellent musicianship, as well as a strong international cast (including Catherine Deneuve, Udo Kier, David Morse, and Joel Grey).
By yanking the formula of musicals out of the entertainment realm and injecting it into a story with real conflict and pain, the result is a musical with incredible power.

One of the two greatest Alien movies.Period!!!

I thought this was the second or greatest alien movies ever(Alien). I thought that this wasn't just scary but also very entertaining. As I'm watching this movie I think that there weren't many things I would change. All of the cast members did very well. There was comedy in the movie. There wasn't gore or serious swearing. So you can watch it with your family. This was just an all around great movie which I would recomend to anyone.

Great Show from the 80s

This was the best show on TV in the 80s and would [beat] most the stuff we have to endure now.My brother and I used to watch this show religiously with my father every friday night like people who go to church on sunday. I would love for nothing more than it to be released on DVD in season boxsets getting the enitial movie intro on DVD would be cool but it would only make me thirsty for the season releases. The show had really great characters that you got to know. It had plenty of action but it was a story about mateship and helped you understand not just about fighting battles but living your life in amongst a war.My favourite character was louis he was only small but he had the M60 and was always wise cracking about how big and dumb baker is.
