...Oh, Boy. Quantum Leap on DVD.August 22, 2002 The floodgates are open. Releasing television series on home video was completely unpractical six years ago, but the convenience of DVD has showed studios that fans will buy up television programming on DVD. As many television shows have been announced over the last month or so, it appears that a great deal more are coming. Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Warner Brothers Home Video and Paramount Home Entertainment have all recently announced commitment to television on DVD. One of the first new series coming from this announcement is the science fiction drama Quantum Leap due in 2003.
Before Scott Bacula traveled through space as the captain of the Enterprise, he traveled through time as Sam Beckett, a scientist who discovered the ability to leap through time, from person to person, within his own lifetime. Along with his friend Al, who appeared to Sam as a hologram from the future, Sam used the ability not for personal gain, but to help fix other's lives which had gone astray. Although the pilot of this series is out there on a discontinued DVD, it looks like the rest of the series will follow. Although no information is available on prices, specs, or features. Information on the show and likely many other popular series will be coming down the pipeline soon.

This is a video for collectors, fans and anyone who likes acoustic performances. This band is, in my opinion, the greatest. Combining folk, pop and rock they have made a perfect mix. This session took place back in 1999, in which they performed in a perfect harmony along side the orchestra. Little Wing is one of my favorites. The arrangement for this song is simply the best I have heard. Don't miss the chance to enjoy one of the best "unplugged sessions" ever.

The Telos and Beginning of De Palma's Career

Body Double stands at the nexus of De Palma's career. For many, Blow Out represents the aesthetic culmination of his series of psychological thrillers beginning with Sisters in 1972. With Scarface, he then ventured onto a larger, more epic and expensive canvass, as well as trying his hand at new genres. But much like his most recent Snake Eyes, Body Double was something of a pit stop, a chance to rev up and purify his fluid and inventive style, while provoking his audience and critics at the same time. Despite their dismay at the film's purported sleaze, critics could not deny De Palma's technical genius. And while it might appear that he was damning himself to the prevailing notion that he was nothing but a Hitchcock wannabe by referencing plot elements from Vertigo and Rear Window quite explicitly, Body Double was in 1984 the greatest evidence that he had forged a unique style that today is instantly recognizable as his own. It is no coincidence that the film was De Palma's first collboration with cinematographer Stephen Burum, who since then has lensed 6 other De Palma films (The Untouchables, Casualties of War, Raising Cain, Carlito's Way, Mission:Impossible, and Snake Eyes, in which they seem to work telepathically). I would rate their collaboration as being as important and influential as De Niro and Scorsese in the annals of modern American film history. Body Double moves like a fever dream bathed in cold sweat. And as politically incorrect as it may seem on the surface, a more subtle reading of numerous details will reveal that, once again, the true villain is patriarchy, including the so-called hero himself, played with passive understatement by Craig Wasson. As a business savvy porn star with platinum blonde hair and a, Melanie Griffith gives what is still her best performance. This is perhaps De Palma's most hypnotic film.

Another Great from Disney & PIXAR

Monsters, Inc. is a superb movie, filled with all the great characters, comedy, and CGA that the movie-going audience has come to expect from the greatest duo to produce computerized movies, Walt Disney Productions and PIXAR. It gives the audience a lot to enjoy, with very little in the way of detractors.
The movie centers around two monsters, James P. Sullivan, AKA, "Sully," and his best friend, roommate, and Scare Assistant, Mike Wazowski and their adventures with a genuine child, who has been set loose in Monstropolis and Monsters, Inc. Together, they protect the child and bring her back home safely, all the time having great adventures and misadventures.
I must say that I was thouroughly impressed with this film. The graphics were stunning, especially the faces of the children. Anyone who has seen the original Toy Story will understand just how far this technology has come. The story was very well told, with the pace only lacking in a few short sequences. The characters were very well done, both by their voice talents and in their computer-created appearences. This was a movie with something for everybody: children, adults, heck, even teenagers can see this movie and find something in it especially for them.
Like all of PIXAR's films, you really have to see it at least twice, not only to enjoy the main production again, but to look and listen for things that you may not have noticed the first time around. Monsters, Inc. runs rampant with sight gags, witty lines, and those little add-ins that are PIXAR's inside jokes. As an example, the PIXAR Desk Lamp and Star Ball both make cameo appearences in the movie. However, unlike previous PIXAR films such as A Bug's Life, this movie did not include any outtakes that made audiences stay in their seats during the credits, to the general consternation of the theater employees.
Speaking of cameos, anyone who has seen either Toy Story should surely recognize the voice of the Abominable Snowman. Can you guess who it is?
Also, there is a short before the movie and it is hilarious. I hope that when the release version comes out, the short will be included, just as Gerry's Game was with A Bugs Life. Trust me, once you see it, you'll know why.
All in all, this was a fantastic story and a wonderful movie. Everybody with kids or parents should go see this film to understand just how monster's feel about us.

Depp's movie all the way...oh yeah, and Leo too

Not to disparage all the fine comments about Leo's fine acting, but this is a Johnny Depp film, and he is brilliant in it, as he is in every movie he's ever done. If you've tried this out due to being a Leo fan, I heartily encourage you to try other Johnny Depp films.

The Lion in Winter - movie DVD cover picture
When Titans Bestrode the Earth...

This is the type of film that reminds us of the power of acting to involve us with people we initially do not know. It also is a shocking reminder of the poverty of today's actors to make us care about those we see on the screen. The emotional detachment of most of today's American cinema (e.g., Pearl Harbor) stands in stark contrast to the violent emotionalism as exhibited in this magnificent film. John Barry's score beautifully reflects this film's multi-faceted emotional appeal. Hepburn (Eleanor) and O'Toole (Henry II), along with the Plantagenet siblings, are engaged in a fratricidal all-out war, in which evreything and anyone is fair game. Emotional warfare is as lethal a weapon as Dirty Harry's Magnum, and all the players use it to great effect. The Lion in Winter is virtuoso acting at its highest form, and the dialogue written for the entire cast is pitched high, but still undeniably effective. "What family doesn't have its troubles?" asks Eleanor as one titantic battle subsides and the principals mend their wounds in anticipation of the next conflict. What that question asked can be seen in film after film since then, but few films are able to demonstrate the high stakes of emotional claims as being paired with political and social stakes like this one -- maybe Godfather I and II had that depth of writing and acting, but few others. This is film-making at its finest: no glitz, relatively simple sets, authentic costumes, and the best cast you could possibly have at the time. What more could you want? Grab this movie in any format you can find it's a film you'll want to see again and again.

Incredibly fun and where's the DVD?

I first saw this Don Knotts comedy back in the late Sixties...and it stuck with me. (Especially the tune the organ plays.) The scenes of nervous, bungling, bug-eyed Don Knotts made me laugh out loud then -- and they still do now. So I was really pleased when this movie was finally released on video a few years ago. My only gripe now is that I wish it were out on DVD because I'm sure I'll wear out my video before too long!
Of course, I'm a big fan of the Andy Griffith Show. So that probably explains why I like this movie so much. Don Knotts was largely responsible for making that show the huge hit that it was. And, if you like his schtick on Griffith, you'll like this movie.
In fact, there are about a half dozen or more actors who appear in the movie -- most just briefly -- who also worked with Knotts on the Andy Griffth Show. Hal Smith, Ellen Corby, Hope Summers, Burt Mustin and Rita Shaw to name just five. So it was fun to pick out the familiar faces. The movie was even written by two of the Andy Griffith Show's most prolific writers!
Knotts has the nervous man character down so well that some scenes in the film are almost painful to watch (like when he's giving his speech -- "I've been called brave. What is brave? Let me clarify this" -- before the picnic crowd gathered in his honor), but I can't help myself. He's funny.
I won't go into the plot because so many others have already reviewed it. I just wanted to add my two cents (and Five Stars) to the other reviews.
The bottom line: this is a fun movie, great for the whole family. If you haven't seen it, please do so. Sure it's corny. Sure it looks dated. But it's not supposed to be Citizen Kane. It's just a great popcorn movie to share with friends and family.

Absolutely one of the GREATEST films of all-time.

I have watched this movie countless times as well as most of Kurosawa's films. This movie is one of my all-time favorites as well as Yojimbo. Anyone who appreciates great films will love this one very much. I guarantee it. As the previous reviews say, the storyline, characters, and acting are superb. "Often imitated, but never duplicated" is what I would have to say about this and other Kurosawa films. For those who don't know, the modern westerns were all based off of Samurai films. The Magnificent Seven, For a Few Dollars More, and Last Man Standing, to name a few, are all based off of Kurosawa movies. Buy it and enjoy!
