ELF (2003) Will Ferrell, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen

I loved this movie! It was sweet, wholesome, and totally hilarious! Will Ferrell is raised by elves up at the North Pole, only to find out he is not an elf himself! So he sets out to find his real father. The hilarity starts when he does! James Caan plays a hardened business man, who not only isn't interested in his new son, but doesn't believe his story. Go see Elf!!! It's funny and heartwarming. If you loved the Santa Clause, starring Tim Allen, you'll love ELF!

5 stars only for the special effects

The special effects are thrilling, and the story is quite original, although it belongs to the general genre of "machines-take-over-the-world" scheme. I loved it (all 10 times!), and I was mostly captured by the superbe effects and all that magnificent action. However, these are the only memories the movie has left me with. I just remember the big jumps and the extraordinary kicks - maybe cause I only see these from now on, when I play the DVD! Maybe the "boring scenes" should have had more depth and leave an imprint in the viewer's memory, just like all the action. In any case, it's a great movie, that introduces the new entry-level action all movies of this genre should have from now on!

The Simpsons - The Complete Third Season - movie DVD cover picture
the best show on the planet

Season Three is the beginning of the Simpsons four- to five-year 'Golden Age'. Every episode is strong in season three; with the pace of each episode becoming quicker, the jokes sharper, and the characters and animation more defined.
The basic reason for the delay in the Simpsons' DVDs is the audio commentary. I, too, waited VERY impatiently for S3 to be released. But after listening to the commentaries on S3, I have to say the DVD set has been worth the wait. The audio commentaries on the Simpsons seasons one and two were good (and MUCH better than most other audio commentaries) - season three is even better. The voice talent has joined the commentaries, and it's great to hear Julie Kavner's real laugh, Dan Castellaneta describing the origin of D'oh!, Nancy Cartwright mode in and out from Bart and herself, and Yeardley Smith pitch in her thoughts.
There are some other extras on the DVD as well. 'Colonel Homer' has a hilarious 'pop-up' mode with balloons describing some trivia and insights into the episode. Several episodes have original sketch accompaniment, and a few have Matt Groening's own storyboards in which you can hear the episode audio while watching the storyboards progress.
Butterfinger commercials (very funny) are on disc 1, footage of a Bart Balloon at Macy's is on disc 2, and a 'Jukebox' with short videos of several of the songs of season three is on disc 4. The powers at the Simpsons should also be commended for adding a 'Play All' function to each disc, and there are some very funny (and original) couch gags on each disc.
This is an absolute 'must-own' for any Simpsons fan; but just wait (again), seasons four and five are works of art.

The Best Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland Film Ever Made

George Miller's sequel to the Australian hit film 'Mad Max' takes us to the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the Australian Outback where our hero must choose between defending the last shreds of civilized life or plunge himself into the depraved depths of anarchy.

Although the opening scene in this film starts off where the first one ended, there isn't much continuity between the two films. The first film is set in a rather civilized setting where Mad Max is exacting revenge on an average biker gang that killed his family. In the 'Road Warrior' there are no towns or any signs of civilized life other than a small group of squatters holding an isolated oil well and refinery. The settlers are continuously besieged by hordes of punks/anarchists on bikes and muscle cars who want the installation as a criminal base of operation. Although at first coming to the settlers as an opportunist only looking for gas, Mad Max finds his humanity and helps the settlers free themselves from their attackers.

This is a great post-apocalyptic film with some of the best car chases ever put on film. A fast-paced plot with a good script keeps the audience on the edge of their seats until the final showdown. A great film to own and watch many times.

Excellent DVD

We love the Baby Einstein videos and this is no exception. My two year-old calls it the "Tiger 1-2-3" video. He already could count but didn't recognize the numbers when he saw them. That changed after day one of watching Numbers Nursery. We bought this for him and he watched it over and over and over the first week. Now we watch it once every other day or so. He loves it and counts along with the children. His favorite parts involve the animals, of course. I do wish they had used the numbers 6-10 though. He learned 1-5 so quickly. I think even taking it to 20 would have been good. Otherwise, great video.

The Old Man and the Sea - movie DVD cover picture
A mythical cycle!

Hemingway decide to make an apparent simple story when in reality , he would write one of his most emblematic and passionate works.Santiago is a simple man . In all his life nothing has happened , a flat life in the middle of this fisher community.Suddenly the fate's call comes for him . 84 days in the sea ? twelve weeks without getting any important piece. This means the unavoidable journey , the invisible conflicy between the man and the nature . You have to realize that the sea has been for this single fisherman a friend and a silent lover and witeness of his miseries and hopeless.Suddenly he catchs a gorgeous piece; a beauty blue needle fish. His triumph deserved all the hunger since three months he left his home. This means the epic fight. But the long arm of the fate smiled him just for a brief moment , the sharks will appear and the tragedy begins . Now Santiago has to fight to preserve his piece . The fight is inhuman and awful , he must leave that zone and keep the fish .More than a fish you've killed a man replies in loud voice our simple man. When our hero arrives to the coast he's another man . He won the combat and no matter there were no witeness . The life in many times it's capricious , but you must never give up . You must follow your bliss , no matter how high be the prize you pay. Spencer Tracy made a top knotch performance with this one.The film keeps its inner force and the spirit of the original novel, since its release forty six years ago. Watch this movie . It goes far beyond than a simple entertaining !Dazzling direction and obviously who can fail with a script like this one?A cult movie !

"If you like to talk to tomatoes..." :)

I absolutely adore VeggieTales films, they are so much fun and are totally hilarious. :) Before I deliberate upon this edition to the VeggieTales film collection, I just have one thing to say. If you haven't seen VeggieTales before, no matter what age you are, go to your local film store, get online,etc... wherever it is that you buy films, and purchase at least one, I don't believe anyone could be sorry after buying a VeggieTales animated film. :)Ok, here goes on my review... ;) Veggie Tales- The Ultimate Silly Song Countdown is the, um, Ultimate Countdown to discover just which of Larry's Silly Songs are the whipped cream of the banana split, the cream of the crop, the cheese of a cheeseburger, well, you get the point. Included in The Ultimate Countdown are wonderful songs such as, "Barbara Manatee," "the Pirates who don't do anything," "The Yodeling Veterinarian of the Alps." As well as others, but which one will be the #1 Silly Song. My lips are sealed, to find out all you have to do is borrow, rent, or purchase it, how much better could it be?

The Movie Holds Up Well

This 1967 movie holds up well after all these years. Although George Kennedy won a much deserved Oscar for his role as Dragline, Paul Newman should have gotten one as well for he is as good in this film as any he has made. The critics I believe have underestimated his acting ability, probably in part because of his good looks. No one with eyes that blue can act too. Newman is cast here as the noncomformist Lucas Jackson who gets sent to prison for destroying parking meters while on a drinking rampage. Newman's egg-swallowing scene has become a classic, and the phrase "what we're got here here is a failure to communicate" has become part of our language. Newman really does a fine acting job here, even when he sings "I don't care if it rains or freezes/As long as I've got my plastic Jesus," having just learned of the death of his mother.

My one complaint about the film is no fault of Newman's. The religious overtones get a little heavy-handed. For example, there is one frame where Luke is lying wearing only his shorts with his arms stretched out and one foot over the other in a classic crucifixion pose. Then there is the scene where he runs into a deserted church complete with a wooden cross on top of it and laments his fate in a loud voice.

This film is still very entertaining and much worth your viewing time.

Highlander - movie DVD cover picture

Highlander - The Immortal Edition rocks!... In addition to the director's cut of the original movie (which is the best of the 4 - duh), you also get 3 Queen music videos (2 directed by Mulcahy himself) and a companion CD of Queen music (unfortunately containing only 3 songs). What better way to experience Highlander? A note to Queen fans : the 3 music videos presented here (Who Wants To Live Forever, A Kind Of Magic, and Princes Of The Universe) are not on the recently released Queen/Greatest Video Hits 1/The DVD Collection.
