Dumb..... in a really, really good way

Trey Parker takes the milk-toast, wholesome feel of an Oklahoma-style Musical and, with a nudge and a wink, uses this format to tell the true story of starvation, murder, and CANNIBALISM on the old frontier. The result is insanely funny.
The music is dead-on. Parker is a damned good commercial composer/musical satirist. His uncanny ability to nail any style and then accentuate certain aspects and mock that style is featured in this movie, as well as his Southpark series, and most convincingly, in "Southpark: Bigger Longer and Uncut." But let me tell you, these songs are really funny. The Trappers song always has me gasping for air. "Let's Build a Snowman," is one of the funniest moments in any movie that I can recall.
Several of the scenes in this movie are of the "so funny it hurts" variety. The funniest scene in the movie is also the goriest. I have never seen gore and humor come together like this. You should know which scene I am talking about and I don't want to spoil it. This scene is Monty Python-at-its-best-funny and that my friends, is really friggin funny.

Kurosawa last masterpiece

Made at - for Japan - a staggering cost in 1985, Kurosawa's "Ran" comes closest to catching the director's decidedly black mood at the time (considering the derisive response in Japan to Dodeskaden [inspiring an attempted suicide], the grudging acceptance of Dersu Uzala, which had to be made in the Soviet Union if at all, and the passive response to Kagemusha - the Japanese critics' usual treatment of anyone so rash as to look for financing outside Japan [see Oshima's In the Realm of the Senses]), "Ran" was another of Kurosawa's long-cherished projects. That it made it to the screen relatively intact (Kurosawa even forced the otherwise independent composer Toru Takemitsu to accept his temperature-gauge and compose a pseudo-Mahlerian score) is one of those miracles of international film-production that arrives maybe once in a generation. That Kurosawa took Shakespeare's cue and painted a picture of medieval Japan (read: the modern world) that is uncompromisingly dark and pessimistic is perhaps not entirely surprising. The film feels like a last testament, even if Kurosawa would go on to make three more uncharacteristically tired films - Dreams, Rhapsody in August and Madadayo [Not Yet]. The darkest testimonial from a grizzled filmmaker at the height of his powers, "Ran" is indispensable to any serious study of Kurosawa's oeuvre.

Absolutely HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen!!!! It is funny how Bob just keeps coming back. He's never gone. The Dr.'s family loves him, and the Dr. can't stand him. The part when they eat all together is very funny. I recommend this movie to anyone.

Cast Away (Widescreen Single Disc Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
More than a survival movie.

Don't make the mistake of thinking this is a modern day Robinson Crusoe. It's far from it! Survival is only a small part of the story of Chuck Noland, who ends up on a deserted island in the Pacific after a plane crash. There's a great deal of things that make this movie a success. Notably, there are lots of special effects and some very clever filming and computer work. As a result, you really feel as if you are on the spot - on the plane as it goes down, on the raft as it bobs in the waves, on the island alone. It's the realism that's led to the PG-13 rating, and not offensive content. Admittedly there are a few items of content that are morally questionable, such as a few incidents of blasphemy, a crude sexual joke, and the contemplation of suicide. Initially Chuck and Kelly live together while unmarried, and though-out his stay on the island there's a real absence of religious faith as fatalism replaces providence (while burying a crash victim, Chuck concludes an "empty" ceremony with the words "So. That's it.") But on the whole this movie is morally inoffensive, and its PG-13 rating is mainly due to frightening scenes, such as the airplane crash and later a floating dead body, and several injuries including the scraping of skin on coral, a splinter in his hand, and the removal of a tooth. But even these scenes are more frightening because of the emotional sense of pain than graphic images. Clever manipulation of sights and sounds are used to create a real sense of fear and suspense, and even the simple dropping of coconuts on the sand becomes frightening. Hitchcock would have been proud.
But even more than the special effects, it is especially the emotional conclusion combined with some stellar acting that made this movie. The survival story is framed by the story of Chuck's life in America. As a result, the movie is like a play with three Acts. Act 1 introduces us to Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks), a FedEx systems engineer whose professional life is ruled by the clock. "We live and we die by time. Let us not commit the sin of turning our back on time." His personal life, including his relationship with girlfriend Kelly Frears (Helen Hunt) is dominated by time, and it is exactly for this reason that Chuck ends up on the doomed plane which crashes into the Pacific in a storm.
Acts 2 shows Chuck cast away on the island. The clock, as it were, has stopped. His survival experiences were based on the research and actual experiences of the screenwriter, and are depicted with a great deal of realism (Hanks made his contribution by losing a lot of weight and growing a delightful beard). The island is no utopian tropical paradise, and consequently Chuck doesn't succeed with everything right away. As he seeks to obtain the basic elements needed for human survival - food, water, shelter, fire, and companionship - there are memorable moments of triumph and tragedy, including his frustrations in getting coconut milk, his exuberance in starting a fire, and his primitive dentistry skills. There is little dialogue, but a few floating FedEx packages supply him with "Wilson" the volleyball, who becomes his companion. It's somewhat corny, but Wilson becomes a device for Chuck to express his thoughts and hold imaginary conversations. Time has stopped on the timepiece Kelly gave him, but it is her photo on the clock that inspires Chuck to stay alive.
Act 3 brings Chuck back to civilization after some five years of survival on the island. His Rip Van Winkel type return from the dead in my mind is the highlight of the movie, and results in emotional and moral dilemmas of tremendous power. As his colleague says: "Tomorrow we're going to bring you back to life." But coming back to life isn't so easy when you return to a world after five years where time hasn't stopped. If surviving as a castaway on an island was difficult, Chuck discovers that it's just as difficult to be alive in the changed world to which he has returned. Back at home, he's still a castaway. Just as on the island, where "I stayed alive. I kept breathing", so now he must keep breathing, waiting to see what the tide will bring. A magnificent story-line combined with some tremendous acting from both Hanks and Hunt results in a powerful sense of loss. I was grateful that the story didn't degenerate into a feel-good type ending with an immoral tryst, but actually suggested faithfulness to the institution of marriage (a departure from Chuck and Kelly's initial live-in relationship). The ending is tough, but realistic, emotional, and powerful, and I was left thinking about it for a long long time. There is a note of hope in the end, but it is not shoved down your throat, with Chuck left at the cross-roads of decision: "Where are you headed? Well, I was just about to figure that out." If there is a criticism, it would perhaps be that we don't get to spend as much time with the changed Chuck in Act 3 as we would like - he has a new perspective on life, and we would learn something if we saw this new perspective put into practice. But for viewers whose lives are also governed by the clock, what we do see is already enough to motivate us to spend our few years on earth under the clock wisely.

The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The Best of the Best

At the end of The Two Towers, Gandalf says the battle of Helm??s Deep is over, the battle of Middle-earth is about to begin. In a sense, that does sum up The Return of the King. Helm??s Deep was really just an opening skirmish. And the real battle is happen right now between the men, elves and the orcs.
Saruon comes to believe that men still have courage to encounter his force and men are not weak as his supposed. He will not risk the people of middle-earth united again. He fears the King of Gondor return. Therefore Saruon brings all his army to Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor. He wishes to stick down the city to the ground in order to make the middle-earth fall in shadow again. The world is in dangerous.
Gandalf rides to Minas Tirith for alert to the Kingdom of Gondor. The leadership of Gondor is in the hand of the stewards who are supposed to be the caretakers for the throne. However Denethor, the stewards, don??t wish to bow to Aragorn. Gandalf raise the beacons of Minas Tirith, Rohan answered. Although Gondor didn??t come to the aid before, the riders of Rohan are summoned to the aid of Gondor. And in the Pelennor Fields they fought for the freedom of middle-earth.
On an external level we have the massive war, and on an internal level we have 2 little hobbits, Frodo and Sam. They are on their hands and knees literally crawling up a mountain. It is the relationship between two nice characters. It is the heart of the movie. They face the adventure with trust, friendship, confidence and mission. Gollum wish to sow discord the fellowship between them. And you can imagine the pain and suffer in their journey.
The movie brings a message: At what cost will good win? People always believe justice is always happen around the world. The evil cannot win the good. But they did not think everything have its price. Although at last the ring destroyed and Aragorn become the King again. There is great lost as well. Theoden, the King of Rohan dead in the battle. Frodo always lost his finger. There is also lost many solders and warriors of Gondor and Rohan. The unexpected is Gandalf and Frodo go to Undying land with the Elves at last. Many people come to believe that it is a fate of the ring-bearers.
The position of the Lord of the Rings can beyond Star Wars in my point of view. It considers all situations which we will face. Like the forbidden love between Aragorn and Arwen, the friendship between Fordo and Sam, the battle between human and evil, the different between 2 wizards Gandalf and Saruman.
None of us can imagine from The Fellowship of the Ring, the fellowship will be broken into 3 parts. Fordo and Sam continues their journey to Mount Doom. Gandalf and Aragorn leads the mankind resist the evils. Pippen and Merry becomes a warrior. They find themselves with an army that going into battle with.
The whole movie runs 200 minutes. And there is even no time for you to think. I have waited this firm since The Two Towers. There has been almost 1 year. And it is very glad that if finally in theater. There are many huge battle senses and emotional stories. The only regret is the director Peter Jackson cut many sense in order to make the firm run only around 3 hours. Many of my friends and allies always purpose this problem.
This movie also makes us to understand that man should be united in our common interest. We all live in the same planet. We all breathe the same air. We should not separate by only selfish or our own meaningless will. Of course Saruon would not appear in the real world, but the spirit always exists. Men always own guilty in their mind. They are weak to resist evil. They are scattered, divided, leaderless and unsatisfied. If we let this situation continue happen, men will fall in no time.
All we shall do is make our world peaceful and fortune. Let us make our dream ?V Utopia to come true. Let us make every child have their right to be educated. Let us make our world have resources to help the beggars. And let us always look down show some mercy to everybody.
One small step of us, there will be one great step for all mankind. Let us hope tomorrow the future of mankind will be brighter than everything.

Newsies (Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
I've been watching this movie since I was 5 years old...

This is quite possibly the only musical you will ever need. Complete with song, dance and love interest, this was the only movie I ever watched as a little kid. It may not have done well in the box office, but any child who likes the "Sound of Music" or ANY other musical, will absolutely love Newsies.

Roots - movie DVD cover picture
Roots is for everyone.

No matter the color of your skin, you MUST have this box set of the original ROOTS. This is a chance to own a small, but intensely significant piece of history that you can share with your children, parents, friends and anyone else.
ROOTS chronicals the 7 generations of author Alex Hailey's family, beginning with Kunta Kente, a free young man of 15 living in The Gambia, Africa with his mother and father. And just one short day after his manhood training, he goes to find a log to make a drum for his little brother and is captured by the slave hunters. He is then taken to America, where he is sold into slavery.
Kunta Kente is a strong warrior who NEVER gives up his quest for the freedom he knew in Africa. And though he is beaten to within an inch of his life several times and even has his right foot cut off, he never stops trying. His strength and courage and legacy is passed on to his daughter, Kizzy, who passes it on to her son Chicken George, who passes it on to his son Tom, and finally, Tom's granddaughter passes it on to her son, Alex Haley.
This is a TRUE tale of the utmost strength, surrounded by what is the REAL American History. Not soft-soaped too much. Just gritty and raw reality. And since Amazon.com has the lowest price on the box set that you'll find, I heartily suggest this one, along with "Roots: The Next Generation". Be prepared to be uncomfortable. But remember, growth can never occur until you step outside your comfort zone. Buy this set and start growing!Dr. Braxy :o)

Feel healthier and motivated to move!

I bought the 4 Mile Super Challenge after doing the Walk Away the Pounds express-Walk Strong video. I like this video because it does not require any equipment. You also do not need a whole lot of space to do it, although you will move continuously through out the tape. Leslie shows you the four basic moves that you will do in the video during the warm up at the beginning. I found the upbeat, techno like music very energizing. I am in my 20's and was looking for a way to start exercising, because I really never have had a routine. I really felt encourgaged by all the people in the video who are much older and doing all the moves with me.

A lot of reviewers will tell you that Leslie talks a lot and they find it annoying, but I like it. It makes the tape go by faster and lets you know shes a real person. She also has a great message in this video, "Think positive, What's tomorrow to bring?" and " You are so smart for taking care of your body. Im so proud of you." For me, these words were very powerful and kept me going until the end of the tape. It really sent a message that I thought about even after the tape- just reminding me that I really should be taking care of myself, no matter what my age. Leslie is very sweet and bubbly and she smiles and encourages you through out the tape. If you are not a beginner and consider yourself more advanced, you can still get a great work out from this tape by sitting lower during some of the movements or kicking higher during the kicks.

Leslie really makes you want to exercise, and get up and move. I found it very encouraging as a beginner who never really had an exercise routine. I like that she talks to you during the tape because it really feels like she is talking directly to you. And she is so positive- I give this 5 stars.
