Dude, what a shibby movie, dude!

Granted, this movie is dumb. And at first glace, it makes no sense. But that's the whole beauty of it. No one said this movie was, um... thought provoking?
Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott), are two dudes with quite a vocabilary (sweet, shibby, and dude). Waking up one moring, they realize they don't remember what happened the night before, but it seems as though they got quite wasted! There's a lifetime supply of pudding in their kitchen, they have tatoos, a stripper (and don't ask if it's male or female- hard to tell!) gave them a suitcase full of money, and their girlfriends ("the twins"- Jennifer Garner and Marla Sokoloff) are pissed at them because they ruined their house and forgot their anniverary. No problem, right? After all, Jesse and Chester got them gifts. They'll just go to Jesse's car and get them. But whoops- where's the car, dude?
From then on, Jesse and Chester go on a wild chase after their car, a bunch of space dorks say they have to get the tran--- ("how can we find it if we can't pronoce it?!"), a bunch of "hot chicks", running away from lama's (or are they?), a chinese food take-out troubles.... wow, this movie is f-u-n-n-y! Isn't it?
The cast is great- Hal Sparks as Zoltan, Jennifer Garner and Marla Sokoloff as the twins, and Seann William Scott and Ashton Kutcher as Jesse and Chester. The movie also has some great tunes.
See this movie if you really want to laugh. See this movie at a party. See this movie with your friends. See this movie if you have a dumb sense of humor (like me). Just see it!

The Emperor and the Assassin - movie DVD cover picture
A beautifully directed epic

This film has something of a split personality. Clearly, the potential for grand military epic is right here, and the budget seemed big enough for it, but the director also delves deep into intricate character development and tries to fit the story into the structure of a classical Western tragedy, to the extent of creating five "chapters," which unfortunately interferes with the natural progression of the plot. Nonetheless, stunning sets, costumes, and the exotic allure of China in a still unformed and dynamic period make the 2 1/2 hours of sluggishly paced dialogue and action bearable.
From the beginning, the atmosphere is palpably different from more commonly known Chinese epics (e.g., The Last Emperor). Still centuries away from being members of a stagnant culture, the characters here have much more obvious pizzazz, and the Qin court is not stultifying, but bubbling with strong personalities and pervaded by an aesthetic that is still semi-barbaric. The king of Qin is at first a rather likable man who is striving to unify China by conquering the six other states who have endured many decades of struggle. The first chapter prepares you for a straight military epic, with which I, as a military history buff, would have been very happy. But apart from brief shots of massive army camps and a few minutes of siege operations here and there, you get no sense at all of the course of the campaigns which are going on; the generals are marginalized as characters.
However, the rest of the movie is a intense personal drama that borrows from Sophocles and Shakespeare. The editing is rather choppy and the dialogue seems to lack energy. I won't reveal details, other than to say . . . the final confrontation, which is very well set up, falls flat by having a character survive about 10 sword wounds, most of them to his vital organs, to speak an anti-climactic line. I'll stick to Kurosawa next time.

Qbert is the man!

I've been wanting to see this movie for a really long time, and I finally got the chance the other night. Man! This movie is so awesome! If you're a fan of turntablism, then you are going to wet yourself. The movie takes Qbert's Wave Twisters album and puts it to a funky story about intergalatic war and the dentist that's going to save all the b-boys and b-girls. The animation fits so well with the music that you just find yourself sayin "Oh Damn that was so phat" over and over. And if you do like the movie then pick up the album so you can relive those tight beats and crazy scratches over and over again. Qbert is one of the greates turntablists that has ever lived, and probably will ever live.

Best action movie of the decade!

This is BY FAR the best action movie of the 90's. A fantastic epic film, with the sites becoming more and more exotic until we reach the climax in the [UK-France] Chunnel. This last chase scene by itself is better than most action movies of this decade. I've seen this movie more than 10 times and I see something new each time.Highly Recommended.

In the Bedroom - movie DVD cover picture

In the Bedroom is a movie that will stay with you. The story, acting and emotions of the film are intense and played to perfection. It tells the story of a mother ( sissy spacek) and father (frank fowler) whos son is murdered and the emotions they go through and the revenge on the man who murdered thier son. The scenes in the movie have such meaning , like the begining scene when the father tells the story about the lobsters and the scene at the end where they are driving and the ball game is on the radio. A very haunting excellent movie. One of the best in years.

My all-time favorite musical

True, act 2 does drag a bit, but Into the Woods is hands down my favorite musical, and this tape definatly does it justice. The entire cast is unbeatable, but the real star is the Sondheim score. Every single song is a classic, most notably "Children Will Listen" and "No More." As is typical of a Sondheim musical, the lyrics are more impressive and exiting than the memorable music. James Lapine's book and direction make this show more that just a fairy tale fantasy. This is a show that teaches the importance of community and family. If you want to see quite the best musical of the 80's buy this tape, you will not be dissapointed.
