Do not miss this!!!!

Wow. This movie is great. The suspense is very well brought out. The use of light and dark gives a tremendous sense of fear. Audrey Hepburn was amazing. She pulls you inside her character. Mel Ferrer was great to deliver such a great film. I was not born in time to see it in the theater. :( Alan Arkin was superb. It was interesting to see a real actor living his character.

The Hustler - movie DVD cover picture
Absorbing! Realistic! Riveting! Fantastic!

1961's "The Hustler" is a picture that will truly "suck you in". It totally absorbed my attention throughout. Making this in black-and-white was a wise choice by the movie-makers too. It sets the mood of the drab surroundings we experience during the film.
A perfect cast has been assembled here, with Paul Newman a knockout in the lead role of pool shark "Fast Eddie" Felson. Piper Laurie, George C. Scott, Murray Hamilton, and Myron McCormick give strong support to Newman. And there's a very controlled and somewhat subdued Jackie Gleason as "Minnesota Fats". Jackie doesn't have a huge part here, but he pulls off his role as "Fats" with style.
There are a lot of quiet moments in this picture ... when just visuals propel the story. I like that in movies! Sometimes there's too much dialogue in a film, in places where nothing needs to be said at all. It just seemed to me that the producer/director (Robert Rossen) knew when to keep the actors quiet here.
The Hustler will forever remain a Classic to me!!
Some Hustler stats:---------------------------------- ---Running Time: 135 minutes.Debut in theatres: September 25, 1961.Nominated for Best Picture of 1961. (Beaten out by "West Side Story".)Paul Newman nominated for Best Actor of 1961. (Beaten out by Maximilian Schell--Judgment at Nuremburg.)Both George C. Scott and Jackie Gleason were nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1961 for this film. (Both beaten out by George Chakiris--West Side Story.)Piper Laurie nominated for Best Actress in '61. (Beaten out by Sophia Loren--Two Women.)Film won two 1961 Oscars --- Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (B&W).Billiard champ Willie Mosconi, 14-time world champion from 1941-1957, was a key technical adviser on the set of The Hustler, literally teaching Mr. Newman how to play the game of pocket billiards, right down to his grip on the cue stick. Newman became quite proficient by the end of the shooting of the picture.Newman reprised his role as Fast Eddie in 1986's sequel, "The Color of Money", co-starring Tom Cruise. Newman DID win the Oscar for Best Actor that year.

Always Excellent!

As a 30-something, I still cry when I watch this movie; it always touches my heart, my emotions, my very soul. Everyone is different, obviously; I not only own this movie, I bought the LP (album) when it first came out because I love the songs! For myself, this movie has the most meaning in my life. I have always considered this my Most Favorite Disney Movie ... and still do!

Absolutely essential collection of Marilyn Monroe films, 2!

.For anyone who loves Marilyn Monroe, or even for anyone who knows nothing about her but wants to learn, this is an essential collection of her films.
Buy this set along with "The Diamond Collection I", and you will have most of the best of Marilyn Monroe's body of work. Add "Some Like it Hot" and "The Prince and the Showgirl" to the Diamond Collections I and II, and you will have most of Marilyn's great performances to enjoy.
Among my personal favorites in this boxed set are two of Marilyn's earliest dramatic starring roles, "Don't Bother to Knock" and "Niagara".
Fox did an excellent job with the video restoration, as they did with their earlier Diamond Collection I boxed set. The picture quality is flawless; the Technicolor is intoxicating! I don't think these films ever looked so good, not even when they were first released on the big screen.
No MM fan should be without this collection! It's essential!
MMMmmmarvelous Marilyn!

Great video retrospective where is parts two and three

Rush's Chronicles DVD compilation is a fine collection of the highwater marks in Rush's video-making history with Mercury Records.
Beginning with the 1977 promo track Closer To the Heart and threading its way through Lock and Key from 1987's Hold Your Fire.
Nice additions that would make a person who already owns the VHS version want to buy it include the "in studio" version of Tom Sawyer and the bonus videos, Afterimage and The Enemy Within, which were not on the original 1990 VHS version.
The band should re-release this as Rush Retrospective with these clips(Closer to the Heart(1977), the performance clip of The Trees from 1978, Limelight and Tom Sawyer from Le Studio in 1981, Red Barchetta from ESL 1981, Subdivisions from 1982, Distant Early Warning from 1984, Red Sector A live from GUP tour in 1984, Big Money from 1985, Mystic Rhythms in 1986, Time Stand Still in 1987 and Lock and Key in 1988) plus the 1977 promos of A Farewell to Kings and Xanadu, the 1978 promos of Circumstances and La Villa Strangiato, the 1981 in-studio clip of Vital Signs, Countdown from 1982, The Body Electric from 1984, Show Don't Tell from 1989, The Pass and Superconductor from 1990, Roll the Bones from 1991, Stick it Out from 1993, Nobody's Hero from 1994, Half the World from 1996 and Driven from 1997 for the Complete Rush video retrospective!
Highly recommended!

Everytime I watch it I am captivated

I can't say enough about this film. I watch the video. I watch it when it is on AMC. I watch it cut up by comercials. The whole approach to the movie is superb. No flaymboyent characters. No extra poetic license. To believe that a story like this needs embelishment is crazy. The ship, the tragedy, the irony are the story. This movie captures all of this and more. True human drama captured on film. Made me read the book which is even a better story! Even provides some triva with the presence of "Q" from the Bond films, and the Beatles' manager from "Hard Day's Night" having small roles. Very enjoyable movie that is easy to watch again and again.

Tilda Swinton turns in a fine performance as a mother who suspects her young son of murdering his gay lover. Unfortunately her performance is marred by the shortcomings of the film itself. There are too many unexplained details such as how her blackmailer obtains incriminating evidence about her son and why he needs an accomplice to collect the money from her. There are also some improbable situations such as the mother dumping the body into shallow water and the blackmailer turning friendly, so overall the film doesn't make much sense. To me part of the suspense of the film revolves around waiting for the writers to tie up the loose ends, but unfortunately this never happens.

Top notch, with a few flaws.

First, the casting is confusing. One of the principle actors is Sam SHEPARD - so is he playing Alan SHEPARD? No, he plays Chuch Yeager. Another principleactor is SCOTT GLENN. Is he playing SCOTT Carpenter? No. Is he playing SCOTT crossfield? No. Is he playing John GLENN? No, HE plays Alan SHEPARD. At least they have SCOTT Wilson playing SCOTT Crossfield. But enough of that :-)
Actually, the cast is excellent. The story is based on history, but is somewhat fictionalized. The film is excellent, with a few drawbacks.
First, three of the seven astronauts have very small parts in the film. There is quite a bit of drama there that was left out - Carpenter overshooting the landing zone and being lost at sea for several hours, all of the technical breakdowns on Cooper's flight, and Slayton being grounded because of a heart murmur. But the movie is long as it is, and that would have made it even longer. Perhaps it would have been better to include more and make it a two part movie.
Secondly, I didn't like the pot shots it takes with the news media.
All in all, though, it is one of my favorite movies.

I'm still wondering if the critics actually saw this movie

I can't figure out what's so bad about this movie to get such reviews. The only thing I can figure is the reviewers have never gotten past the author's and star actor's religion. The book was incredible and this movie stays very true to it. The visual detail is great, the action is great, the story is wonderful. It's a really good movie. Too bad so many can only see it through a filter.
