Physics has let us down, God has left the receiver off...

... the hook and time is running out.
Apologies to Arthur Koestler. This movie confirms a very important trend in post modernism, which is a late affirmation that one, the future hasn't happened, and two, that even with a gargantuan effort, it probably is too late now.
Given that the main plot is in two segments, it is astonishing how both slot into the premise of essential despair outlined in "the ghost in the machine" by Koestler. Let me explain.
Firstly, the Borgs - potentialy the most sucessful lifeform in this galaxy - are depicted brilliantly as ugly mothers, so much so that in you ever wanted to allow some form of secular damnation, this is it, right in your face. These monsters can make you live for ever. We appear to be so very hard pressed to resist them, and the question arises, is Man an anomaly? if we were ever made in the image of God, what did he do when he made something far more powerful but unspeakably hideous? Similar questions about the significance of man and his integrity as a lasting form in the universe occur in Alien particularly, and I believe the anxiety is the same one as depicted here, though the dramatic vehicle is of course entirely different.
Secondly, many physics buffs reading this will be aware that there are three major crises approaching, all with long, long time constants. Three elements are likely to be approaching scarcity status, Helium, Copper and Phosphorus. The first two are virtually essential for the technology used in large scale engineering, especially in space. Verify this if you doubt it. Now, I don't think it is an accidental feature of the movie that the second plot element depicts a situation where only one man might have the answer to the technological cul de sac not too many years from now (note that he is working alone and there is at that time no large community of scientists to support him). He is close to collapse, and has all but given up. The war situation at that time is close to the projected "civilisation crises" currently under discussion by intellectuals such Steven Shermer and others, and obviously, its getting "thin"...
And this is the real kicker - it takes an impossible situation (as far as physics knows about), visitors from the future, and on top of all this, someone (a Vulcan) has to come from the outside to really get earth on its feet and to start the "real" future.
The danger is that this movie is really showing the wounds as they are. Its a good film, and very well made. From this point of view it is really frighteningly accurate and clever. We are dead vulnerable, scared of the great empty spaces, terrified of being alone, and looking for some unspecified something or someone from beyond. God help us.

i love this movie!!!

If you have not yet seen this film, I strongly encourage you to stop reading this review and run -- don't walk -- to the nearest video store to purchase a copy.

I recently had the pleasure of viewing this cinematic masterpiece in its entirety (on cable television). The uninformed may consider this film inferior to the first two, because it doesn't feature the endearing young Macaulay Culkin (and lovable rogues Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern). However, in my humble opinion, the plot, the pranks, and the lovable Alex D. Linz quickly will have viewers asking "Macaulay who?"

Left to his own devices, the fiendishly clever young Alex really puts these "Eurotrash" spies through the ringer. The sadistic pranks are every bit as good (if not better) than in the previous two Home Alone films. At the end of the day, the FBI is lucky to have Alex (and his affable parrot) on its side, as the international criminals -- having literally taken a beating -- are brought to justice.

Viewers may also be surprised to learn that, in an early high-water mark performance, actress Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation) appears as Alex's sister.

an inspiration

In my ten years as a film critic, I've never seen a better arm wrestling film. And I don't think anything in the future will top it. This is Sly's best performance. Sure, he whispers his way through most of the crucially heartwarming and delicate scenes he has with his son (forgot the kid's name, but I know he did sweep the Golden Rasberry's that year). But if you listen closely, you'll some of the most poetic dialogue since F.I.S.T. The film contains so much insight into the world of the arm-wrestling truckers - a world not often covered on the Hollywood radar. I mean I had no idea that "alotta truckers" sleep in the truck in the middle of a strange city with a little kid at their side. I could go on and on, but I won't. I'll just close my review by saying that the filmmakers also balanced the comedic element in the picture very well and the guy who played Smasher deserved a Rasberry, too, if only they could give ones just for cameo appearances. And that guy up there made a good point. Bull does have one more match - he only lost once, so hey, we can only hope and pray that there will finally be a sequel with a script as witty and as compelling as the first one was. It'd be the perfect picture for Sly to do coming off his work in Copland. I'm still counting down the days, so Sly if you read this, "Get moving on Over the Top Again, or Meet Me Halfway: Over the Top II, or whatever - the point is get on it - we've all been waiting patiently."
