Disturbing, Brutal, shocking, but brilliant and gripping

I won't write a long narrative on this film. However, I will say that if you are sensitive, DO NOT watch this movie. The language and violence are very graphic and shocking. It realistically depicts both the overt and covert racism that still plagues our nation. It really forces each of us to examine how we view those who are different from us. It also shows that hatred can be defeated individually as well. I must say that at the begining of the film, I hated both Dereck and Danny with a passion, but at the end of the film, I not only repected them, but felt sad that Danny was gunned down after deciding to walk a different path. Ed Norton, Avery Brooks and Stacey Keach do a remarkable job in this film.

A very haunting, disturbing masterpiece which happens to be a personal favorite. Blake is alot like the late Perry Smith. This film is as close to actually commiting murder without really performing the act! Not for the faint of heart.

I just saw this DVD and I'm still in shock. This movie came out years ago, but it could be an exact metaphor of our last election. Christian reveals his family's darkest scandal at his father's 60th birthday part and the family and friends pretend not to notice. Nobody wants to ruin Helge's special day by listening to "Loony" Christian but they're all more than happy to join in on a racist sing-a-long in the presence of the liberal daughter's African boyfriend.

I think everyone who is unhappy but doesn't think there is anything they can do about it should see this movie.

No brains, all body, just perfect

Here is a movie that not only rejects any sort of intelligence, but for once actually embraces it to gleeful effect. I think this flew over a few people's heads - especially the young males to which is was supposedly made for. Meanwhile I compare Torque to the moving version of an Owen Wilson performance: dry, half-serious, deceptively subversive. Complaining that Torque has weak dialogue is like complaining Marilyn Monroe couldn't solve calculus test. That's not the point. Also, each line seems to have an undercurrent of sarcasm that goes beyond the surface value. But ultimately this movie is the perfect hang loose viewing experience. It's all about speed, fighting, and hot actors. As Roger Ebert noted, it delivers all these elements wrapped in a loose b-movie setting with high quality filmmaking. Some people miss the sarcastic tone of this movie, but if you can grab onto it, what fun. Check your Merchant/Ivory at the door and enjoy the ride.

Great movie with a deep message...

I just have to say that this is my second favorite movie of all time (only beaten by the Star Wars saga).

This movie is just fantastic... imaginative and with very deep meaning and messages. Everytime I see it, I find more things about it... this is a much more complex movie than any of the child movies produced these days.

And it has proved to be timeless. I saw it when I was about 4 or 5 years old, and the kids of today love it as much as I did in the early 80's. Great effects, great production design, music, costumes, sets, story, characters... wow !

I wonder what could have happened if Wolfgang Petersen back then decided to make the sequel a couple of years later, with the same actors, same crew, etc... It'd have been great !

And just to finish... I know you'll agree with me: I WANT A MORE DECENT VERSION OF THE MOVIE... I mean: a nice package, the movie in Widescreen format(shame on you letterbox!!), 5.1 surround sound, mastered image and sound tracks, documentaries, deleted scenes, conceptual drawings and artwork, production stills, TV spots, posters... everything that most of the "decent" DVD releases have in the present.

Come on... I've seen much more mediocre and less classic movies in "Special collector's deluxe edition Director's Cut enhanced ultimate criterion collections"

Am I wishing too much ? Perhaps, but remember: "Wunsch ohne Begrenzungen".

Great Total Body Workout

I have 3 of the DVD's in this series and this is the best one by far. There are 5 different sections designed to work the whole body. You can do the whole thing straight threw for an intense workout or break it up into smaller workouts, which are still challenging. I have continued to use this DVD as part of my regular work out regiment and it will tone your body! Plus, Carmen and Michael are fun to work out with.
I recommend buying this DVD if your looking for a fun, effective workout.

pure joy to watch

This movie renews my hope that there are enjoyable movies being made. Jim Carrey is wonderful in this beautifully filmed period picture. The story is told slowly and the characters are allowed to develop. We care about them and cheer for them in the end. Hurrah for Mr. Carrey. He can act, not just act up.

Stunningly beautiful !

I first saw this video recording on A&E "Breakfast with the Arts" program and rushed to the local video store, only to find out the video was NOT available anywhere. I was the more pleased to find out it is now available on DVD. (Why no VHS release though?). The concept of a "danced" opera is initially surprising, but after only a few minutes it is obvious it is a PERFECT match. Purcell's classic has inpired Mark Morris and his dance group to create a visual tour de force which brings to mind designs on ancient Greek vases or sculptures. I am NOT a ballet fan at all, but this combination of baroque and the classical is visually stunning, and the choreography is very "clean," very focused on accompanying and srtengthening the music and the opera's narrative. Although musically it is also a very competent performance, it is the interplay of music, lyrics, and dance that produces an unforgettable performance. Very highly recommended even for those who are not particularly fond of ballet (or even opera) - a perfect point of departure.

Too good for words!

This movie is great for kids of all ages! I'm fifteen and i still love this movie with all my heart. This is not your typical disney movie! This movie ROCKS!! You can watch it over and over again without getting tired of it! I confess, I have watched it so many times i know all the words by heart and can recite it to you. But thats okay since all my friends know the words by heart too! Never have i seen someone who watched this movie and didnt like it. The best thing is that it never gets old. It's one of those movies where everytime you watch it you notice something new. You will not regret getting this movie!!
