We love this movie! It is the funniest, most enjoyable film my children own. I cannot believe it was not one of the most popular films of all time! Hysterically funny, and a fabulous story line. I think there is one use of VERY mild profanity, but only the strictest of censors would mind. My toddler, 10 year old and husband all sit and watch this film together. When ADULTS visit while the children are watching, they wind up staying to see the movie. Belly laughs and breath holding excitement. When people ask me advice on what to get a kid who has everything, I tell them to find this movie. Children coming to visit? Have this movie ready when they get "bored." It will save the day.

OK, so what if the physics were laughable . . .

And as the narrative stated, 'what if we could?'! I read so much about this movie before it was released, so much negative press and so many amusing articles about the stupid movie physics of the story, and finally when I took my wife to see it we both had a whale of a time! In the story, the Earth's core stops rotating and it seems the only way to restart it, to prevent natural disasters getting worse, is to drill down there using a special ship and a crew of 'terranauts', and don't forget that ultrasonic laser dril! In the crew are a NASA astronaut played by Hilary Swank who brings down a shuttle in spectacular fashion and is assigned to the VIRGIL(as this drilling ship is named), Dr Conrad Zimsky(played by Stanley Tucci who really hams it up well when Zimsky's character flips!), a nerdy computer hacker named Rat(DJ Qualls) who has to instigate a massive worldwide cover-up to prevent worldwide panic and main man Aaron Eckhart as Dr Joshua Keyes who warns the authorities of impending doom. They naturaly misunderstand at first, until they meet Ed Brazzleton(played by Delroy Lindo), a reclusive genius who designed the laser drill and the special ship. The SFX are what really makes this one worth watching - lots of variety of underground rock formations and plenty of lava, a magnetic storm destroying Rome in a scene which looked awesome on the big screen, pigeons attacking tourists in London, San Franscisco's Golden Gate Bridge collapsing, and a suspenseful little underwater segment! And the ending is not what you might expect. Less overblown than say, VOLCANO or ARMAGEDDON and with a story much more intent on diving straight into the action with the right amount of character development(Keyes and Zimsky most notably), no unnecessary romantic subplots getting in the way(thankfully) and a mixture of tongue-in-cheek fun and genuinely exciting moments, THE CORE definitely delivers the goods. Highly recommended and don't listen to the critics!

The great Pirates

The Pirate Movie is a wonderfully fun movie, in which all kids should enjoy the cartoon fish, while the older generation can get a good laugh out of all the ribald jokes throughout the show. I loved this movie when it first came out and never missed a chance to see it. ( I think i was 5 or 6 the first time i saw this). I am glad its on video, so i can add it to my collection. If you like this movie, you might want to try Disney's "Newsies" which is another attempt at bringing back the musical to the silver screen.

Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii (Director's Cut) (Jewel Case) - movie DVD cover picture

If you're a Pink Floyd fan, then this is a video you need to see. It gives you a small glimpse of the genious of the greatest experimental band of all time. Nick Mason is an amazing drummer, and he seems to be highlighted in this video. Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour and Richard Wright also shine in their amazing performances of great Floyd classics. The setting is also eerie and somber, adding a great mood to the music. The film really blew my mind when I saw David Gilmour jam on the blues harp when playing Seamus from Meddle. It rocks! Must see!

Night of the Living Dead (Special Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Forget the rest--go with the best!

There are plenty of DVDs out there for George Romero's original classic "Night of the Living Dead," most of which are just as nasty as those VHS versions you used to find in the discount bin at your local video store: scratchy, grainy, unfocused video with muddy, muffled audio. There is also the now-infamous "30th Anniversary" DVD, which needlessly jams new scenes into the original movie (kind of like George Lucas's "Star Wars Special Editions," but with more flesh-eating).
But the only--I repeat, ONLY--DVD of "Night" worth touching is one released by Elite Entertainment. This gorgeous DVD is essentially the same package as the one Elite released on VHS through Anchor Bay a few years back: a pristine print of "Night," along with trailers & an amusing parody film called "Night of the Living Bread" (get it? get it?). This DVD also includes two audio commentary tracks featuring various members of the cast & crew & commercials that George Romero directed back in the '60s! All in all, this is far superior to anything else on the market. Seek it out--it's well worth the effort!

The Fantasia Anthology (3-Disc Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Disney's True Masterpiece

Never a big fan of Disney animation, this reviewer has always made Fantasia a major exception in his catalogue. And it's safe to assume that most people in the same boat (those who favor Kubrick and Scorsese over Cinderella and Snow White) will feel the same way. Sure, Fantasia has its share of cute, furry animals and ferries to boot. But the animation / classical score combo is simply awe-inspiring. How many features start things off with a series of brilliant abstract images matched to Bach's "Tocata and Fugue in D Minor"? Mickey Mouse has rarely been as enchanting as he is in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", and "The Rites of Spring" sequence is as close to naturalism as classic animation has ever reached on film. But it's the film's finale, the "Night on Bald Mountain"/"Ave Maria" sequence, that is truly breathtaking. Never has evil been personified in motion picture history as it is here, and it is unlike anything Disney has attempted before or since. Forget every other Disney "masterpiece"; this is the real deal!
