Deserves 10 stars!

American anime fans who were not familiar with the comics printed in English more than a decade ago have probably spent the past 10+ years wondering what the fuss was about. (Well it certainly wasn't trying to explain the spelling and pronunciation of the title to people!) I'm sure there are as many answers to this mystery as there are fans, but the series would never have captured such a large international following if it weren't for the clownish personality found in the invading "space-demon" Lum. Much of the conflict in the story (especially this early on) seems to spring from her selfishness and her amoral world view. Here's a girl that puts the "I" back into ideology! If you can dig that kind of protagonist well then, there is another hero in the story to help you in those moments when you just can't take Lum's side; high school underclassman Ataru. As the unwilling object of Lum's desire he counter acts her histrionic antics with indignation and a comical inability to see the error of his own selfish machinations. And let's not forget Ataru's girlfriend Shinobu; You see Lum doesn't like Shinobu, not that it would matter if she did.
Those of you wondering how this television series differs from the original manga will find that the character designs in these early episodes are simpler and less divergent from what was Rumiko Takahashi's emerging style as an illustrator. You will also find the key events from the manga series' initial installments intact; but you will be treated to some original detours, most notably a farcical time travel storyline.
In order to introduce the series properly the first episode includes the infamous game of "tag" that American reviewers in the 1980s mischievously used to portray the series as a being raunchy comedy. Little did they know that it would soon be translated and people would learn that nothing (well maybe not nothing) could be further from the truth. In fact, hard core Urusei Yatsura fans insist that the series has only one innuendo-laced scene(and guess what, it's on this disc).
Another key aspect of this volume is the introduction of two supporting characters. After all, it is in this stage of the story that we see the conflict between Shinobu and Lum erupt for the first time. From here on out it takes the form of an anticlimactic running gag. We also get to see Sakura, the school nurse introduced for the first time.
I hate to tag a high school finish to this thing, but I might as well keep with the theme. So in conclu . . . er, uhm, . . .I mean in other words, Urusei Yatsura's transition into a television series is a Takahashi franchise that lives up the original material.

Review of "The Sum of Us" by Cheri

"The Sum of Us" is a beautiful story about the unconditional love between a widowed father, Harry (Jack Thompson), and his openly gay son, Jeff (Russell Crowe). The movie shows a rare glimpse of a father's acceptance and willingness to try and understand his son's sexuality. When Jeff has a date, Harry is there to make sure his son practices safe sex, and when Harry has a stroke, Jeff is there to assume sole responsibility for his care, preparing his meals, helping him get around, and taking care of all his needs. They may drive each other crazy at times, but their unselfish acts of love for each other are heartwarming without being sickeningly sweet. I love this movie because it is honest, funny, wonderfully acted, hopeful, and real. Russell Crowe gives a brilliant performance early in his career. He is so believable you forget you are watching a movie. Jack Thompson is perfectly cast as his father. He is warm and funny. I recommend this movie to anyone that has ever loved or has ever been in love. It is a feel good movie. If you have trouble with the thick Australian accent, you can always use the subtitles.

pretty darn good movie and it is directed by some white guy

JEt Li is very good in this movie. Romeo Must Die..i must say, TRASH!!! this is more like Jet Li. Non-stop action with some touching momentsJet Li and Bridgette Fonda make this movie very interesting and i liked it that they did not fall in love because that would not make sense and that is WHAKc!
storyline is pretty followable.Jet Li is chinese cop that is sent to Paris fo some reason, then corrupted French cop frames him for murder. the last fight with the 2 white twins are very good.
this would be about ranked B considering it is from Jet LI.

Brilliant

This has got to be one of the best gangster films of all time. I don't think Robert DeNiro has made a better movie. Also Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta are brilliant. I don't know why Ray Liotta wasn't in a lot of other movies because I think that he is a genious. 3 decades of Henry's life are in this movie. First in the 50's when he worked at the cab stand. Then in the seventies when he was a run around work guy for the mob and then finally in the end where he is living on his own. This movie I give a 5 out of 5 rating because it has to be Hollywood's greatest movie ever. If you don't agree... I'm going to have to send Henry, Tommy and Jimmy down to talk to you

another touch of surrealism

This surely is a very fine set of Seven Famous Avengers Timeless Sixties TV-Series. Highly Original, Inspirational, Unimitable, Sophisticated, Witty, as well as Extremely English. All flavored with a Slight Science Fiction Surrealist Stamp.

Being marvellously acted out by Patrick Macnee (as John Steed) and by Diana Rigg (as Emma Peel), this series just cannot have been equalled before or since. In particular its sequence 'Too many Christmas trees' stands out. Enjoy & admire this very, very good entertainment.

Barbra's Best Acting

You know, this is a 70's feminist movie, but very enjoyable. The most remarkable thing is that Streisand is so very good in it. It is a Streiand we don't see enough of. She dares to be boring! There are no "Broadway veteran" readings of lines -- no schtick. Barbra is a mother in New York City! Imagine!
Seriously, Streisand the actress has taken a different road. What if she had made more movies like this? Streisand, when she's simple and unadorned, is truly mesmerizing. I defy you not to take your eyes off her in this movie.

A Superb Adaptation

Before watching this I had never read the book or seen the previous Dune movie. However, I was was very impressed with the film and immediately read the book, knowing that the book is always better than the movie and includes details that get left out because of budget and time constraints. However, I was really impressed that the film followed the book so closely. Scenes left out of the movie were not missed and the expansion of Irulan's role was done well. The special effects were well done with scenery that looked realistic. The worms are also faithful to the description of the book. Unfortunately there are many scenes where blue tint is missing or incompletely done in a character's eyes.
From the perspective of someone new to the story, I was able to follow the storyline very easily. This is the mark of a well done film. I was able to go through the entire film without asking, "What do they mean by that?"
Of course for the fanatical fan who analyzes every sentence of the book, no movie will ever satisfy.
