Delius For The Eyes....

This film of Delius' best-known opera is sublime - it is almost as sublime as the music of Delius itself. So with this DVD you get not only the unparalleled beauty of Delius' music but a visual feast as well. The actors do a fine job of "performing" the libretto (Thomas Hampson, the actual singer of the soundtrack, is especially effective), and the direction/cinematography is marvelous (especially the Walk To The Paradise Garden segment, as well as the ending river scene). Even if one doesn't particularly care for opera per se, this film is still highly recommended. AND, it contains the best extra any Delius enthusiast could want: the superb documentary "Discovering Delius", which is worth the price alone!

Once Upon a Dream...

This new 2-disc dvd of Disney's 1959 masterpiece is simply beautiful. "Sleeping Beauty" was a turning point for Disney when animators sought a more sophisticated look for their animation and presented it in widescreen. The abundance of extra features for this dvd show how this look was achieved with a history of behind the scenes which includes samples, restoration comparisons and interviews from many of the animators. Also included are games ("Rescue Aurora" and "Princess Personality Game"), music videos, art projects, art galleries, trailers, scrapbooks, publicity posters, etc. Also included: a 25 minute short film "Grand Canyon", and two other shorts - "The Peter Tchaikovsky Story", and "Four Artists Paint One Tree".
The commentary is especially noteworthy and informative. It features a narration by Disney historian Jeff Kurtti with the participation of Eyvind Earle (art director), Mary Costa (voice of Aurora), Ollie Johnston (supervising animator), Marc Davis (supervising animator), Frank Armitage (background painter), Mike Gabriel (Disney artist) and Michael Giaimo (Disney artist).
The dvd has the option of viewing it in widescreen mode (enhanced for 16x9 televisions) or full screen. I must add that viewing it in full screen will be a travesty - the full glory of this artistic accomplishment is best seen in widescreen!

Great movies, DVD less so

Tongue-in-cheek horror par excellence. Saw Night Strangler when I was 11 and remembered it for two decades plus before viewing this DVD. Night Stalker looks excellent. Night Strangler, however, looks like it comes from a VHS master. High graininess count particularly during darker scenes. No extras on the DVD. Disappointing.

Less is More

Zhang Yimou lifts the vail and provides a wonderous glimpse into life in rural China. The movie tells the story of a young girl who must take over a small rural school while the regular teacher goes away to take care of family matters. If upon the return of the teacher there is "Not One Less" student, she will be paid, but if she looses any of her pupils, the money she so desperately needs will be forfeit. She is soon tested as she finds students are torn between going to school and obligations to help their families tend the land. The young girl, Wei Minzeh, who has no previous acting experience is stunningly sweet, incredibly determined, and savy. It is hard to imagine why she was not nominated for Best Actress. The Director did much more than expose life in China to the outsiders view, he showed the universality of human traits such as indifference, bureaucratic thinking and finally compassion. Ulitimately one realizes that this movie could have just as easily been filmed in West Virginia, Maine or the farmlands of California.

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
One of the best adaptations of all time.

The beauty of this film is simply staggering. As literature, The Lord of the Rings holds a unique spot in history as one of the first works to be considered Fantasy. Though it is truly in the style of previous "romance" works, LOTR is one of the only books that truly delves into the sacred and mythical and comes out of the underworld with dignity and a lesson learned. Peter Jackson and the entire crew of the film version have not hesitated to let themselves be taken away by this truly amazing story and have surrendered to the world that Tolkien created.
While the film is honestly quite bombastic and over the top at times, it is quite forgivable. The story itself is not lost in the minor changes in adaptation, and the film makes up for it in it's ability to vividly re-create Middle-Earth into a colorful and alive place that I am not even capable of imaginging when I read the book. The film also shortens the rambling tendencies of Tolkien and focuses instead on the story and the characters, bringing to light some parts of the book that may not be so clear.
This first Lord of the Rings film does what a film adaptation should do: it takes direct inspiration from the book and makes a masterpiece that is true to the original, yet stands on it's own as a brilliant and transcendently beautiful work of art. I can't wait for the next movie to come out!

couldn't stop watching!

These movies are like the most addictive soap opera! We watched about an hour at a time until we had watched all three movies in one week. And to be honest, I really want to know what happens to the family after godfather III! Many people find the third movie to be the weakest, and while I will admit, that plotwise it is hard to follow (make sure you watched the other two very recently!), emotionally I thought it was necessary. The second one seemed to me to be void of emotion...especially for michael. This last one reminded us that he was human afterall. The special features were great. very entertaining...we watched all of them immediately after watching the last movie. I highly recommend this set!

Anne Of Green Gables The Continuing Story - movie DVD cover picture
Touching and full of love

I saw it at my cousins house, and kept crying. It showed a view of the war that I hadn't been able to see when I was studying it earlier in school. It had so much love and caring, that I have only been able to find it like that in church movies. This is the best movie that I have seen, especially when Anne found Gil in Germany as a imprisoned doctor being held by the Germans, after months of searching and going under cover. The end was a tissue moment, when Anne got to keep Dominic, and gave Green Gables to Diane and her family.
