Deep Cover DVD

The release of this film to DVD format makes it a welcome addition to my permanent DVD collection. The DVD's quality is excellent, and I only wish that there were more special features on the DVD -- it's bare-bones ... the film, the trailer, and some cast notes.
The film itself is a classic that stands the test of time. It does not appear dated, 10 years later. The brooding Laurence Fishburne plays an Ohio cop enlisted by the DEA to go undercover in LA. He does so well, and goes so far under, that at one point he tells his handler, DEA executive Gerald Carver (Charles Martin Smith), that he can no longer tell if he is a cop posing as a drug dealer or a drug dealer posing as a cop. He shows Carver two kilos of cocaine, asking what he should do with them. Carver tells him, "You're a drug dealer ... deal drugs!"
The film chronicles Fishburne's descent from moral clarity into the very morally ambiguous world of the drug dealer, where to maintain his cover ("The only rule is don't blow your cover."), Fishburne ends up doing as much evil as the folks he's trying to bust.
He partners with crooked attorney David Jason (Jeff Goldblum), and together they "rise" in the drug-dealing underworld. The film is realistic, gritty and contains memorable dialogue. The film is about moral choices... At one pivotal point, Fishburne tells Goldblum he's a cop, and Goldblum answers, that who cares if he is, and still offers him a major future in high-dollar drug dealing. We see Fishburne wrestle with good vs. evil choices, and the realism of that struggle is what makes this a great movie.

Joshua is a special movie.

In the Joshua series of books and now the movie author Joe Girzone in simple terms presents some profound thoughts. Principally that the Secret of Life is "not how much wealth we each accumulate over our lifetime but how we each use the unique skills and talents that God has given us to help others along the way". The Joshua movie with the help of a terrific cast shows us in an entertaining way the importance of using "love" instead of "hate" in our daily lives.
This movie is a must-see for people of all ages in particularly for the youth of today some of whom could use help as far as establishing values and using role models. If you know a child that is taking any type of religious instruction, the Joshua movie would be a perfect gift.
The DVD also contains cast interviews and background that put a personal touch on the special theme of this movie.

A Superb Series - One of the Beast Ever!

There is no aspect of this show that is below exceptional; the acting, the writing, the casting, the directing...all excellent. It is nice to see good writing return to prime-time television, for we, as a viewing public, have been subject to poorly written shows with predictable plot-lines for far too long. Finally, a show has emerged from the networks that can captivate viewers of all ages and entertain us to no end.

The Missing (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Blue Duck who?

Last time I saw Tommy Lee Jones in a western, it was as Cap'n Call in the magnificent 1989 TV miniseries LONESOME DOVE. There, he and Gus (Robert Duvall) are beset with an old nemesis, the nastily evil half-breed, Blue Duck. In THE MISSING, there's Chidin, who makes Blue Duck look like a choirboy in comparison.
It's 1885 New Mexico, and Maggie Gilkeson (Cate Blanchett) bosses a cattle ranch on the periphery of civilization. Maggie has two daughters, the teenage Lily (Evan Rachel Wood) and 10-year old Dot (Jenna Boyd). Maggie is unmarried, but is sweet on her ranch foreman, Brake. Maggie is also a country healer, and one day Samuel Jones (Tommy Lee Jones) shows up for some docterin'. Jones is Maggie's father, who deserted the family to "go Indian" when his daughter was very young. Now, Samuel is more an old Apache than an old White Guy, and Maggie despises him for what he did to her and Mom. But then, Lily is kidnapped and Brake tortured to death by a band of white renegades and U.S. Army Apache Scout deserters led by Chidin, a native witch doctor that's heap bad medicine personified. The marauders are snatching girls from homesteads all over the territory with the intent of selling them into slavery in Mexico. Getting no help from the local sheriff or the Army, Maggie persuades Jones to help her track her daughter and her abductors.
This is Tommy Lee's best performance since the FUGITIVE, though whether it's good enough to merit a Best Actor Oscar nomination remains to be seen. Jones is up against some stiff competition this year, including Crowe in MASTER & COMMANDER, Penn in MYSTIC RIVER, Hopkins in THE HUMAN STAIN, Murray in LOST IN TRANSLATION, and perhaps Cruise in THE LAST SAMURAI. Similarly, THE MISSING will have an uphill battle for Best Picture. Blanchett, however, is another matter. Every screen role she undertakes is of Best Actor quality. (She already has VERONICA GUERIN under her belt for 2003). I suggest it would take a phenomenal performance by another actress, e.g. Kidman in THE HUMAN STAIN, to overcome Cate's consistently extraordinary talent.
Perhaps a viewer's biggest criticism of THE MISSING might be that it's beyond belief that Maggie would take Dot along on the dangerous pursuit of Chidin. By today's standards, yes, it would be. (Even taking your kid to the mall is dodgy business, what with all the prowling child predators.) However, Maggie is a tough and self-reliant woman living in perilous times. Perhaps taking Dot along on a growing-up exercise wasn't an imprudent thing, especially if Maggie knew her youngest would stubbornly follow anyway. Anyway, I didn't find that aspect of the film incredible.
Big Screen horse operas of quality are relatively rare nowadays. This year we've been twice blessed - OPEN RANGE, and now THE MISSING. Stetsons off to director Ron Howard for a gritty and absorbing yarn. If nothing else, it deserves 5 stars for entertainment value.

Great Movie, music and chapter stops

Very, Very good movie, never gets boring because it hits you with a new plot twist every few minutes. The movie also had a very creepy feel to it from the very beginning. I also found the soundtrack very good, and the songs fit what was happening in the movie at the time. I especially like the theme song "I Want More" and the song "Neighborhood" by Space, which is in chapter 14. Although this DVD does not have a chapter menu, it does have chapter stops, which you can go directly to if you have a good DVD player with chapter search.

Absolutely amazing!

Wow! I was so surprised when I saw this movie. I've never been into musicals, especially after seeing Moulin Rouge. Basically, I went to this movie because I'm a Richard Gere fan. I didn't really have high hopes. But my outlook on this movie definitely changed. I loved every single minute of it! The cast was incredible, the songs were catchy, everything was great. I've already seen it twice and will probably end up seeing it again. When you watch this movie you will be smiling the whole time. I looked around the movie theatre as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger were performing on the screen and everyone watching had a huge grin on their face. If you see this film you will know what I mean! Give it a chance, even if you're not a big musical fan. You won't regret it.

Wrong.

Be warned that the colors in this dvd are exceptionally bright and washed out. The movie itself is great, in an Ed Wood mimics softcore Godard ala Bava sort of way. But if you're expecting a quality dvd image, think again. The transfer is acceptable, but the print is as faded as a hippy's blue jeans.
