Danny Kaye is the BEST!

Once again good comedy wins out. This movie is timeless in its charm and sheer belly laughs. Danny Kaye, as well as the rest of the cast, is a master of timing and facial expressions. We have enjoyed the DVD a number of times, and it is now the grandchildren's favorite popcorn and snuggles movie!

Wag the Dog (New Line Platinum Series) - movie DVD cover picture

* I find it truly amazing that whenever Hollywood paints an accurate picture of our political climate, or tries to alert us to our own ignorance, we just don't seem to get it, no matter how many times they try hitting us over the head with the obvious. It becomes evident that ''anti-Red'' scaremonger Joseph McCarthy really didn't need to do much of anything -- he could have just sat back and sipped on his martini, because, in the end, the American public doesn't take political messages in Hollywood movies seriously anyway. Case in point: ''Wag The Dog.''
In a blatant attempt prove to his audience that any kind of media spin desired can be created and executed to benefit any and every political agenda imaginable (as though trying to prepare us ahead of time for the real possibility of an illegal overthrow of "representative democracy" in America, such as occured with the installation of President 'Un-Elect' George Walker Bush), David Mamet shows `We, the People' just how gullible and how easily manipulated we are by "official looking" and "official sounding" media presentations, ESPECIALLY ?when "patriotic" themes are involved.
Just like G.W. Bush and his associate Republican thugs cooked up a non-existent "War On Terror" to keep the public's mind off of the President's misdeeds and political ineptness, so too do the advisors and insiders of Mamet's fictitious administration of an unnamed President cook up a non-existent "War" against a "terrorist nation" (arbitrarily, Albania -- an insignificant dirt-poor country, just like Afghanistan) in order to keep the public's mind off of the President's alleged misconduct with a "Firefly Girl" (a thinly veiled parallel reference to the sexual misconduct of the last duly elected President in the nation, William Jefferson Clinton).
The timing could not have possibly been worse for a scandal to erupt around Mamet's "President," since it is during a point in the presidency where the Commander in Chief is actively seeking re-election. So a Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) has been called in to brainwash and mislead the public with a number of staged manipulative media events all wrapped neatly in the banner of patriotic jingoism. As one of the President's advisers, played by Robert DeNiro, states: "It's a pageant!"
Mamet shows us how easily we can get swept up in jingoism to such an extent that we forget to ask the truly important questions and just sit back on our big fat collectives and 'let someone else do the hard thinking for us.' It's how dictatorships are born -- and to quote the words of George W. Bush VERBATIM, as spoken on December 18, 2000, just less than a week after he was "appointed" President by the Supreme Court:
''If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier... just so long as I'm the dictator.''

Pleasantville (New Line Platinum Series) - movie DVD cover picture
Delightful film but also thought provoking.

A modern day brother and sister David and Jennifer argue over what to watch on T.V. He wants to watch his favourite show 'Pleasantville'(a black and white show set in the 1950's); she wants to watch a music show. Their argument leads to the remote being broken at which point a mysterious repairman leaves them a new one which transports the pair to the idyllic Pleasantville. Finding themselves trapped in this monochrome world they try to fit in whilst finding a way back to reality.
The people of Pleasantville have never experienced art, rain, colour, or anything less than perfection and have no awareness of a world or life outside of their town. The arrival of the two teenagers sparks a change and gradually colour and reality start encroaching on this little town. At this point we can see the uglier side of reality developing as some of the townspeople turn against the 'coloureds' and fight against any change in their existence.
This is a wonderful film to watch. It has its magical, whimsical side whilst also managing to address the issue of prejudice. Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon deliver great performances as the geeky brother and sparky sister and are a perfect foil for each other. Highly recommended

Wow this was disappointing. The stupid parts outweight the good stuff. What a waste. With all the potential to make a real interesting story, and with all the high tech capabilities now vs when the original was made this should have been a real fun movie to watch. It is not. Most of my kids had left the room before the end. definitely rent before you buy.

It really works

My 4 year old loves watching this DVD. It entertains and teaches her at the same time. The songs and the I Spy game help her practice her verbal skills. After a few weeks I've seen an improvement in her letter and sound recognition. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to help their child become a better reader.

The Woman in Black - movie DVD cover picture
Hear no Banshees, See no Banshees

As the Irish legend goes if you hear a Banshee someone will die. Here, in this cult little offering, if you see the "Woman in Black" then a child will die, or so goes the tale in the small British seaside village of Crythin were young London solicitor Arthur Kidd has been sent by his peer to tidy up the loose ends after a client who owned the revered Eel Marsh House estate passed away.
The town itself has a secret that slowly unravels as Kidd finds himself trying to get his work done so that he can return home to his wife and family. In the town he begins to hear stories and learn things about the house he is about visit. The house itself is situated on a small island that can only be reached by a seaside path called the "Nine lives" path, because that is how many lives you will need to cross it, as the tide comes quickly in and out covering the path and cutting the house off from the rest of the mainland. As Kidd takes his inventory of the house he starts to find obscure artifacts and hears ghastly sounds that slowly peel away at his confidence. Back in the town he learns more about this strange woman that he sees dressed in black popping up around the place, but the locals want nothing to do with her. In fact most of them go out of their way to avoid her completely. Kidd decides to grab the bull by the horns and spend a night in the house to see if he can unravel the mystery.
This film is wonderfully cryptic and captures the spirit of Poe and the feel of Hitchcock all mixed together in a total threatening atmosphere of mortal dread. Do you see the cover of this DVD and that woman pictured on it? Well she will have your wits on hairs-end before the final credits role. There are several scenes where she appears and each of them is hellraising stuff, literally. Just by standing there she will have you taken aback and when she starts moving, well that is a whole different sport altogether. The filmmakers have managed to actually create great scary scenes in the same vein as "The Changeling" or "Salem's Lot".
Horror fans tout this as the scariest film of all time. Is it the scariest film of all time? Well it is certainly not the best looking horror film of all time because of its restrictive television look and feel, however some of the scenes in this screamer are outstandingly well done and it transcends what you would expect from such a production. This is not a horror, but more of a ghost story, yet there are psychologically horrific scenes. One involves a toy soldier and little girls voice and then... well once you see that scene alone you will be hard pressed to find anything that will make you jump as much. Truth be told there are many scenes in other films that you will make you jump (Sloth in Se7en comes to mind) but it ranks up there with the best of them. However where this film does work, and it does this in aces, is with the appearance of the Woman in Black just standing there, doing nothing, just staring with those dark eyes - the blackest eyes - the devils eyes... that is why this film gets the #1 spot hands down. Nowhere has a film come as close to having you dive under the covers by using such simple cinematic presentations as this Woman dressed in Black. It doesn't have to jump out at you and go "Waaaa!!!" to make your hands fly up towards your eyes. If it did that then you would really be elevated to complete hysterics.... but maybe it does do that... maybe it does... you will just have to see it find out... go on... the Woman in Black dares you to take a look at her.
Once was enough for me.

movie to see over and over again

There never is a farm unless a couple of ducks in a nearby pond qualify. It's about a couple of city folk who decide to live in a cottage in the country and find things different. Throw in some screwball incidents like the corpse buried on their plot and turning the whole local village into a Norman Rockwell picture and you have the gist of what this is all about! Naturally, Chevy Chase plays Chevy Chase the writer with a writers block, or a journalist with writer aspirations and wife who can, write, which busts his ego. There are two dogs which have minor parts. The scenary is nicely captured in film and there is a Christmasy feel towards the end - 'tis the season!

Working out for dummies...

Wow, let me start by saying I am the most uncoordinated person ever. I've got a whole library of fitness dvd's sitting around collecting dust thanks to the WATP series. I can't stress how much this dvd has helped me change my life. Since November 2004 I have dropped 50+ pounds and I'm still dropping! I usually workout every single day, interchanging the 1, 2, and 3 mile workouts. In general though, I get the 3 mile workout in at least 3 times a week. I have also begun to train with the FIRM parts series now that I have developed more endurance and energy. I know I'll reach my goal thanks to Leslie and her workouts.

What's made this so effective for me is the EASE and SIMPLICITY of the workouts. You have absolutely no excuse not to do them. This coming from someone who absolutely HATED exercise, and now I can't live without my 3 mile walk a day.

I did watch my calorie intake while on this program, but nothing too drastic....if you stick to it, the pounds will come off!

Goodluck to you all!

The Comic Pair From Rocky & Bullwinkle

This movie is filled with subtle comedy in the same tradition as the original animated version on the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show!
I laughed and laughed at the antics and comic situations this pair get into. If you ever saw the animated version you'll love this real life version as well! A very good movie when you want something different and lighthearted and filled with comedy so subtle that you better pay attention, which is easy to do as the movie draws you into it so easily. A great movie for collector's of real life versions of animated classics!
