DVD mini review

I can't say enough about this show, as it has always been a hit with me since the pilot. There are no shortage of interesting and funny storylines, Jerry Stiller has go to be one of the most funny personalities on television, and without him, and the chemistry between the great comedians in Leah Remeni (completely sexy and self assured) and Kevin James, this show just wouldn't have it. In my opinion, it should be Kevin James who gets the $1.5 million per episode instead of Ray Romano,(who incidently is in one episode of the first season) as he is wittier, funnier and more spontaneous by far. I love this guy. If you were ever a fan of the Flintstones or the Honeymooners, you'll see a lot of welcome parallels.I cannot wait until (and am hoping) for the second season to come out. The cost of this 3 disc set (1st season) is so inexpensive (29 episodes) that I would recommend that if you like this show, it is more than worth it!!!

Punch-Drunk Love (Two Disc Special Edition) (Superbit Collection) - movie DVD cover picture

First I have to admit I only watched about 15 minutes of this movie and then "skimmed" the rest of it. In order to have a fair and accurate review I believe one should watch the entire movie before judging. However, those of you out there who honestly want to know what kind of movie this is before buying it or renting it I will give you what I wish I would have known before renting it.
Interestingly enough you have people who really loved it, or really hated it. I go in the "I hate it category." But oddly enough hardly anyone tells you WHY it's bad or good for that matter, although I haven't read all 109 reviews. These are my reasons for hating it:
1.It made absolutely no sense.
2.Endless shots of silence and nothing
3.Bizarre - an example: In the beginning, you, the viewer, are watching an empty road for dragging seconds (seems so much longer) then a horrific car crash happens, waking you up, then a truck pulls up and dumps a piano onto the driveway where Adam Sandler stands. Then nothing, no explanation, just moved on to the next pointless scene
4. Scenes of moving colors Monopolizes the screen, feels like watching a lava lamp up close.
I just didn't understand the point. Where is it going? What happened? Why? Who? Huh? Perhaps it is "artistic" and for that people like it. I on the other hand, feel like I just killed some brain cells.
One reviewer wrote " those who liked it should read The Emperor's New Clothes, again" I laughed, he's right... people are marveling at something that just isn't there. If you like artistic/weird, then this you will love. However, if you have no idea what you are about to rent or buy, beware... it isn't what you think it is. Not funny, no romantic, not anything.

Uncovered - The Whole Truth About the Iraq War - movie DVD cover picture
"Democracy is based on suspicion, not trust"

The above title is what is needed for a healthy functioning democracy, as someone in this doc. quotes and attributes to Jefferson i think it was. Anyway enough of my poor american foundation history. This dvd shows the systematic and cowardly use of a synchophantic monolithic media onslaught by the current administration in building a climate of fear, using lies and competently manipulating a 9/11 hangover that was brutally exploited in order to invade Iraq.
Obviously for the shallow people behind this, the acquisition of Iraq's oil is worth a lot more than it's own soldiers lifes, iraq casualties, making the u.n look redundant, helping U.S. haters get more recruits with a location where they can channel their hate against u.s. keepers of the peace, pre-emptive strike justification by the worlds leading democracy setting a fine example of might over right etc.
Hello 1930's europe diplomacy and i'm sure countless other examples that have proved really profitable for people. The administrative people who think that this is right, are not fit to tie the laces of the ex-govt employees and other interviewees of this doc in my opinion.
It is not one one sided either, as you get to hear both sides of the issue; with the administration giving all their specific, different and shifting justifications and the experts with views to the contrary givng their opinions and examples and explanations of what non-sense the media bombardment amounted to. It only seems biased in the way, that what the people critical of the administration say makes sense against what are flimsy arguments for justifications or in one particular case even resorting to forged documents.
The people in this documentary seem to me to be individual true patriots of America, the world leader for democracy, unlike the functionaries in the administration whose sole objective, over-riding all other concerns, is the consolidation of power at all costs.

Insert clever pun here

Not only is this a great movie, but it is a fantastic DVD. One thing you really notice is the outstanding picture and audio transfer that made it to this disc. Even on my small 30" TV it felt like I was watching this in the theater again. If you have a DTS capable DVD player, you'll really appreciate the Bruckheimer soundtrack.
The extras on this DVD are where it really stands out. This thing is packed to the brim with extras. And I'm talking about quality extras, not a bunch of "music video" or "upcoming trailers" fluff to fill up the disc. The extras are all entertaining, and fairly lengthy. The shortest one on here is the HBO First Look, which is still 25 minutes long. I almost enjoyed watching the extras as much as the film.

Equilibrium - movie DVD cover picture

This movie is packed with action and has a great, new look on an old plot with tons of twists to always keep you guessing. If you like action movies, see this movie. If you like martial arts movies, see this movie. If you like guns, SEE THIS MOVIE!!!You are gonna hear alot about how this movie is a Matrix rip-off, but it's not true at all. Just because they use guns, martial arts, and wear all black automatically makes it a rip-off? There is NO wire fighting and NO bullet-time which made the Matrix. Sure the movie poster looked a little like the one the Matrix used, but big deal. The only things that really links this movie to the Matrix are the trenchcoats and the awesome fight sequences (in my opinion, Equilibrium has faster paced action).

Lady for a Day - movie DVD cover picture

This movie is a light-hearted, sentimental tale of Apple Annie (played by the charming 75-year-old Australian May Robson). As the "queen" of her neighbourhood, Robson is friends with practically everyone in Times Square from Bigwigs to panhandlers. She pretends to be the gracious and rich Mrs. E. Worthington Manville when she learns her daughter Louise is visiting her (she lives in Spain) for the first time since infancy. Enough of the plot! Audiences laughed and cried at the film when first released in 1933 and it was a smash hit. This was considered the great stage actress Robson's greatest screen performance and as much as I admire the work of Bette Davis, I think Robson made her character more realistically warm and her playing was natural and heartfelt. William is suited for his role as Dave the Dude as it fit his rather mealy con-man typecasting. Jean Parker does what she can with her role as Louise. This is a movie worth owning!

Great dvd for any spidey fan.

Wonderful DVD set. Great to finally have the episodes to view at leisure, however - there are absolutely NO supplemental materials. What you get are the episodes, nothing more. Sound and picture are both top notch. Optional subtitles ( english only ). Quite enjoyed the early seasons. The Bakshi stuff is, well, weird. I mean Spider-Man by way of Twilight Zone weird. Trippy, dippy psychedelia ( one can almost hear the Strawberry Alarm Clock providing the musical score ). Even these are pretty cool, though. The animation is extremely limited ( at several points, our hero jumps from building to building to...nothing. Spider-Man just hangs there in mid-air, apparently levitation being another of the side-effects resulting from that radioactive arachnid bite ). These are minor quibbles, though. A must-own set, a document of a time long gone. Just so happy to finally have these on DVD. Five Stars. Though the fact that there are no extras to speak of might give one pause before purchasing this set... Go ahead. Be brave. Do it for Spidey...

Shark Attack 2 - movie DVD cover picture
I've never seen Jaws...

In the early 1980s Universal/MCA sued Film Ventures International for copyright infringement because the Italian exploitation shark shocker FVI was distributing too closely resembled Universal's trademarked Jaws series.
So why aren't they filing a similiar legal complaint against distributors Nu Image, Trimark, and the makers of Shark Attack 2? This movie lifts entire sequences, as well as plot lines, directly from Jaws 2 and Jaws 3-D (why anybody would rip off that cinematic turkey is beyond me) so blatantly it's, well, jaw dropping.
The mutant sharks from the first Shark Attack movie head over to Cape Town and the next thing you know our heroes (if you can call them that) are up against stock footage mixed with the most lifeless looking fiberglass sharks to ever disgrace no budget schlock cinema. There's an Evil Capitalist subplot so shopworn that it falls apart and sinks out of sight after the first fifteen or so minutes, the debris of which pops up every now and then. The female lead wants revenge against the sharks for eating her sister in the carbon copied Jaws 2 opening scene, she falls in love with the lead, not because their characters have anything in common, outside of being in the same movie, but you have to have a T&A love scene in these kind of things to keep the audiences attention.
There is a character named Kenny, guess how long he lasts and where he ends up.
So it goes.

My Dinner with Andre - movie DVD cover picture
a unique gem

Do you ever get tired of endless conversations about how you hate your work, how you dislike and despise your co-workers and how much better you could do the job that your boss is doing? Are you fed up with conversations about the same ole things: shopping, computer news, weather, sports, the business world, gossip, society gossip? Do you feel, after seeing another mindless car chase/explosion/blow em up shoot out/gross out movie, or another regurgitated romantic comedy with its nauseatingly predictable storyline, dialogue and ending that you've had enough and you seriously need a change of pace, a window on a different view. If you are ready for a quiet but at turns funny, profound, silly, and very lively two hours, then get My Dinner with Andre; the best two hour conversation in the history of man. It's about a collision between two ideas about the nature of life; what keeps us going, what gives life meaning.

Think of it this way, you're having dinner with someone and having the most boring conversation ever, and next to you are two people talking about all kinds of interesting things about what seems like everything under the sun. And you desperately want to be at that table. Well, this movie is that table.

Some have accused this film of being pretentious. Give me a break. This is about the most unpretentious film you can get. But what this film is is flat out stimulating and brilliant.
