DON'T BE A PINHEAD-BUY THIS NOW!!!

Damn, the Ramones were/are great. This movie is worth it for them alone. But somehow the rest of the movie works too, in a cornball, B-movie, 1979 sort of way (I say this in a very positive way too). It's both a time capsule and a fun look at what high school would be like in an alternate universe, if there was any good music around anyway. I'd love to see a high school movie that has Type O Negative all over the soundtrack. Of course it would probably end with all the main characters killing themselves, so maybe that wouldn't work... Anyway, this movie rocks-stay away from the sequel though!

Denzel is the Man!!!

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. It is long and there are some parts that move by really slowly, but taken as a whole this is truly one of the best films ever made. I am not a huge fan of Spike Lee, but he really out did himself with "X". Denzel is perfect as Malcolm. Angela Bassett is wonderful.
This movie is moving and dramatic. I cried numerous times through out the movie. I was caught up in the life of Malcolm X and I immediately went out and bought the book by Alex Haley.
No matter your views about Malcolm, Spike Lee, or the Civil Rights movement this movie is entertaining and stands on its own merit.

The Heart of Jazz

What would you rather watch to get a taste of German cabaret in the early '30s, Cabaret (1972) or The Blue Angel (1931)? If you answer the latter you may especially enjoy this interesting compilation that is less polished than many others, especially the big studio productions of later years.I am especially charmed by two productions that might be at the bottom of others' lists--the dance hall performances by Tessie Maize and Ruby Darby. By modern standards, many of the dancers were too heavy and too unpolished to even point a camera at, but they let us see what an ordinary audience of their times could see, not only the numbers, but the unaffected intimacy of the piece, and their cheer and enengy. This DVD is like discovering a treasure in a collector's attic. A must have.

The Andromeda Strain - movie DVD cover picture
Stands the Test of Time

"Andromeda Strain" is one of my favorite movies because it stands the test of time. Although made in the early 1970's, the technology shown, including the computers still looks up-to-date, with the main difference being that today, the graphical displays of the data would be much more colorful. However, the techniques used to analyze the "Andromeda" organism would be the same ones used today. Of course, much of the suspense of the movie is created by a stuck sliver of paper, and that would not occur today, but 99% of what is shown (including the threat to mankind for terrestrial biological warfare or extra-terrestrial organisms) is still very relevant. In fact, the society in which the film takes place is more "future-oriented" than our current one because reference is made to the Lunar Receiving Laboratory in Houston which processed the samples returned from the Moon by the Apollo astronauts, and which has since been idled by the loss of the spirit of exploration in our current society, so the makers of the film were able to do more futuristic thinking and make a story and laboratory that looks contemporary even decades later. Finally, the actors, led by Arthur Hill (one of my favorites) are all "cool, intellectual" types, and although there are differences of opinion between them, they all submerge their egos to get their vital work done. It is sad that films of this type are not made any more. Get it and see what I mean!

great movie

I'm glad this is resurfacing. "Rent A Cop" is the movie LizaMinnelli most regrets making (she sez), but she has nothing to atonefor: this is a rollicking, vivacious star turn, by far the best thing in the picture. Burt has his moments but seems fatigued at times, and Dionne Warwick is simply bad (although she looks fab). Robby Benson has a few funny scenes. Jerry Goldsmith's terrific score is out of print ....
Many people remember this movie as the one that garned Liza a Worst Actress Razzie award in 1989 (shared with "Arthur 2"), but no one seems to remember that she actually received rave reviews from Variety and the New York Times for this performance. The Razzies like high-profile marks, it seems. Look for Bette Midler and Madonna to duke it out for that award next year (for "Isn't She Great" and "The Next Best Thing", respectively). Haven't seen Madonna's flick, but in Bette's case, the honor(?) would be well deserved.
Anyway, if you're a Liza buff and you've never seen "Rent A Cop", give it a whirl. She gets all the best lines, looks great (if a tad heavy) and breathes a lotta life into a formula action flick.

funny

Shrek is a playful comedy is full of love, comedy, action, retrospection, and fairy tale creatures that actively flirts with the audience from the beginning to the end. The film tied me up with humor that was meant for young and old, lay and expert, men and women. Nevertheless, the humor was not the best characteristic of the film. No, the best characteristic of the film was the concerns of real life that were brought up with charm and seriousness, which was made easily digested with the humor. Some of these real life concerns was friendship, love, discrimination, intolerance, and greed. The only aspect that I did not like was the villain's short stature, which was used as a tool for slapstick humor. However, I am willing to let this one slide, since it reflects the ambiguity of each individual personality. In short, this is the best film I have seen this year, and it is far better than any other computer animated film that I have seen.

The Best Anime Series!

Wow! There's so many reviews already. I guess no one has to read mine to know how good this show is. I brought the entire collection on DVD a year ago, and I love this series to death. It's awesome! For the first volume, it'll get really interesting when you get to episode 5. That's when the show gets real serious with one more interesting character (Vicious), who is the arch-rival of our main hero, Spike. The character designs for this show is incredible. Faye Valentine, our main heroine, looks really hot. Boy, I just love her. This anime series is high quality from beginning to end!

Better than the book

This is the first time I have preferred a movie over the book on which it was based, something I thought would never happen. The movie is only loosely based on the Dumas novel. Some reviewers have complained that the movie is not true to the book. It would be impossible to make it true to the book in a two-hour period. There are so many subplots in the book's 118 chapters that a movie would have to be several hours long to portray it faithfully.
While I loved the book, I actually liked some of the departures from the original storyline. When reading the book I wanted to sympathize with Edmond but found it harder as the story went on. In the book Edmond in the end is a rather unlikable, arrogant character (despite the good he does). In the movie he regains the decency he had before his imprisonment. In the book he abandons Mercedes to a life of loneliness despite her obvious love for him and settles down with a girl young enough to be his daughter. In the movie he reunites with Mercedes. In the book he harms people who were not responsible for what happened to him and doesn't care about consequences until a woman and child end up dead as a result of his behavior. In the movie he metes out justice and harms only the people who deserve it. The movie is a great moral tale, a great struggle between good and evil. In the book the line between good guy and bad guy is blurred, and Edmond becomes, in many ways, no better than Fernand, Danglars and Villefort. By removing the moral ambiguity I feel that the screenwriters have actually improved on what Dumas wrote, which is rare for film adaptations.
This appears to be a fairly low budget movie, so be prepared for some imperfections, such as the lack of great background music that I would have expected of a period piece. I also agree with some reviewers that Fernand was miscast. Having said that I still highly recommend buying this movie.

As superb as the first movie

In this video, Ariel and Prince Eric now have a daughter named Melody. Melody is very much interested in the sea, and Ursula's evil sister Morgana, knows it, and wants to try and trick Melody into becoming a Mermaid as revenge against Ariel, but will she succeed? Or will Ariel be a heroine? You'll need to get the movie and see for your self. But I will let you know the movie is filled with action, drama, and comedy, just like the first movie "The Little Mermaid". Adults and children alike of all ages can enjoy this wonderfully animated motion picture. Most of the original characters are featured in the movie along with some new faces. As with the first movie, (which by the way was released over 9 years ago) this one contains fun music which the kids can enjoy. If you want a film you and the kids can enjoy for years to come, "The Little Mermaid II" is one to get.
