Cute Movie with Superb Video Content

Okay, it is a Disney movie (or Pixar, same thing--more or less) so you aren't going to sit down with your college buddies to watch the movie. However, if you are looking for a quality DVD in regards to video quality and audio seperation, this DVD is a must have DVD.
II found myself getting tricked by this video as sounds came very distinctly from the rear right and rear left channels on several occasions throught the presentation. The seperation is simply stunning.
The video portion is also something to note with high regard. Each frame of the video is perfect with no lines of resolution visible even at close range.

Chambers of Love

Perhaps Wong Kar-wai's international attention has diminished viewers' perception of this sumptuous film. Like a star that outshines other nearby stars, people soon forget its intricacies and the wonder and nature of its possible existence.

"In the Mood for Love" is like that intricately woven web of vapours, energies and intensities which shape and form that delicate but volatile atmostphere of a star, or "mood" in the film. It is what rises up to the surface, although our perception of which nonetheless mutates with each subsequent viewing. To say that Wong's films do not have a plot is not entirely true and sounds to me as a repeat of the often heard soundbytes from other viewers/reviewers. The thing is, Wong makes visible what other directors would rather not show, Wong's vision is that of an alternative version of the same story. And one that is told through images, colour, light, music, movement.

So, one may say that this is a story about Mrs Chow and Mr Chan's affair - the respective spouses of Tony Leung's and Maggie Cheung's characters - it is an affair which we (as audiences) do not and cannot identify with, as these characters are virtually nameless and faceless in the entire film.

So too, the characters that we do see in the film - Mr Chow and Mrs Chan - refuses to identify with this affair. But for them, try as they might to keep reality at bay, they are, nonetheless, entangling and ensnaring themselves into a labrythine web that they themselves have spun -- by play-acting and role-swapping -- they have discovered their own yearning and desire/love for each other.

Like the four chambers of the heart - love, deceit, self-deception and desire circulate. But like a heart that has closed-in on itself, it is claustrophobic, suffocating and barely alive.

The movement and rhythm of the film is like that slow-waltz (the main theme of the film - Yumei's theme) and the ravishing cinematography - so close is that camera movement to that of Hou Hsiao-hsien's film "Flowers of Shanghai" (shot by the same DOP, Mark Lee Bing) that one is hypnotically absorbed into the fabric of the film, its colours, the texture and density of the images. Wong is building layer upon layer of memories, fictional and real, combining his own childhood memories of the 60's in Hong Kong to imagined memories that could only have come from a distant future - year 2000 of contemporary HK.

When you watch this film, please allow yourself the luxury of time, after all, Wong did take 18 months to make it. And Maggie said in a Chinese interview that without this time, she would not have been able to play Mrs Chan as she did, "when my nails are painted a certain shade of pink, and my hair and makeup is done, my hands automatically place themselves in a certain way..." I think this says much about the truth Wong translates on screen -- that it exists because of his patience with time. So, I guess it'll be nice to do him the same courtesy and make time to see this film - and let its mood absorb you for a while.

I personally loved this movie, and rented it because I am going to play the lead role (Jim Hawkins) in our school presentation of it. I am not a big fan of the Muppets, but this is their best movie ever. The humor really adds to the classic by Robert Louis Stevenson. This movie is the greatest!

I always regretted...

...that Jean-Jacques Annaud switched genre after his first two features : this one and "Coup de Tete / Hothead". The best 2 movies I ever saw exposing the sheer stupidity necessary for revelling in patriotism and sport's cheerleading, and, as well, the devious manipulation used by those pretending to be in charge so to enforce and utilize that stupidity for their own benefit and/or glory. And, although he made other fine movies, I'm just sorry he didn't go on trashing with the same glee : politics, charity businesses, television, religions, or any scam which could not flourish if more people were able to understand that slogans are only used to smother the brain and prevent them from thinking by themselves. Like someone put it : walking in step doesn't require a brain, only a spinal cord is needed.

Hellraiser / Hellbound - Hellraiser II - movie DVD cover picture
one of the two BIGGEST horror films of the 1980s

out of the 1980s, the two BIGGEST horror films were "Nightmare on Elm Street" in 1984 and "Hellraiser" in 1987. With "Nightmare", Wes Craven took us into the world of dreams. With "Hellraiser" 1&2, Clive Barker took us straight into HELL. "Hellraiser" 1&2 could be viewed as one movie since they tie in so closely, so when i say "Hellraiser", i'm actually referring to both films. with the first film, clive barker gave us a story of family affairs and with it threw in demons from hell to punish certain individuals. he also brought us one of horror's biggest icons in "pinhead". right up there with "freddy", "jason", and "michael myers", "pinhead" has been established as a true horror icon. even though it may be a bit of an uneven movie, "Hellraiser" rose above the typical teenage slasher flick to bring out a TRUE HORROR film that doesn't insult one's intelligence. the second film basically picks up right where the original left off with the lead protagonist having to take a trip to HELL itself in order to rescue someone. neither of these films are reccommended for the weak of stomach nor the faint of heart. if you've NEVER seen a horror movie in your life, "Hellraiser" is a good start. After watching these two movies will make other horror films seem not so good after you've seen Clive Barker's vision of HELL. "Hellraiser" is a true horror masterpiece and shouldn't be overlooked at all...if you love horror. the body count may not be to the height of a "Friday the 13th" but that's not what these films are about at all. these movies aren't about "boo"-type scares that startle you or make you jump. no, what "Hellraiser" does is it disturbs you greatly with a sense of somewhat artistic beauty along the way. so it won't make you jump or scream, but it will make you somewhat queasy and will stick in your mind with certain disturbing images. that's what makes it a benchmark in horror. it may not be a pleasant place at all but it's one you'll dare to revisit- just never alone. on the DVD side of things. i wouldn't exactly call it a full-blown special edition but it's probably the most "special" special edition we'll see. the tin's nice and all, with the mini-posters, but someone could've done a better packaging job than this. just a cd case with both DVDs is the indication of laziness on anchor bay's part. the commentary tracks are nice as are the rest of the disc content. the picture has never been clearer and neither has the sound. a MUST-HAVE for any horror fan or especially "Hellraiser" fan.

Not a Dolby Digital 5.1 DVD

This is perhaps one of the best Mehteny DVDs, even with a mixed band. However, BEWARE, this is not a DD 5.1 DVD, at least from Caiman. They did nothing to resolve the issue and could not have shown any less interest in resolving the issue. It starts out with a nice 5.1 intro and then defaults to Dolby Pro-Logic. I have a high-end system (B&K pre, Anthem amps, Cambridge Audio DVD). Do not get this product from Caiman!! I WILL be sending it back and trying again for the real thing. Poorest customer care I have ever received. What a shame........

Good Movie, Great DVD

This 2 DVD set is probably one of my best buys all year. I loved the movie when it originally came out, I loved the video when it came out (with the odd looking holograms with the White House exploding), and I love this DVD.
This DVD comes fully equipped with great "making of" extra, along with trailers, TV spots, and audio commentaries, but it comes with the original ending where Randy Quaid's character straps a missile to his biplane (crop duster) and blows up the space ship.
A great DVD and a great special edition movie!
