This film wasn't a laugh out loud experience, but it is still funny. All of the actors are great, especially Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy. This is a refreshing film with lots of laughs and is very entertaining!

An Excellent feel-good movie

If you hesitated renting this movie because of it's foreign nature or it's lack of box office success (domestically), then let me set you straight. This is a great, funny, movie.
The story takes place in England as a young girl discovers she has a natural talent for playing soccer. She even gets invited to join an all-girls team. The only problem is that she's Indian and her parents are traditional. In their mind, Indian girls need to worry about learning domestic chores and finding a husband, not playing games. Naturally, Jess does what all teenage girls would do in this situation: lies to her parents and sneaks off to play anyway. The backstory involves her sisters pending wedding and what Jess' soccer playing, and erratic behavior, will do to hurt the wedding.
There are a lot of laughs, but there's also some serious drama, and the cast and crew pull it off seamlessly. You will really enjoy this film as an escapist adventure. Many of us don't live in England, and aren't Indian, so the enrichment we received from watching this film more then makes up for any minor weaknesses the film may have. I really didn't notice any weakness, and my attention was riveted to the screen the entire time.
I highly recommend this film. I don't give out very many 5-star reviews, so when a film recieves one, it definitely deserves it.

The Ox-Bow Incident

A tense, hard-hitting drama about the ignorance of mob justice, as relevant to the treatment of black people in the twentieth century South as to the nineteenth century western frontier. Fonda is superb as Carter, chief dissenting witness to the event, and both Dana Andrews and Anthony Quinn are compelling as two of the condemned men. Nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, this is a top western from one of Hollywood's most seasoned directors. Don't miss it.

Powerful, Heart wrenching

Incredible effort by director Peter Weir and a very young Mel Gibson. A powerful statement on the futility of war and the terrilbe toll it takes on youth and innocence. Stunning cinematography and great acting, highlight this tale of the ill-fated Austrialian attack against the Turks during WWI. Two friends enlist hoping for adventure and glory, but learn first hand the horrors and helpless of war. If you liked Saving Private Ryan, you will love this film. A epic movie that that is hard to forget, with a gut wrenching finale. See it!

beyond film noir...

This was the first movie with Orson Welles I ever watched. I LOVE this movie! Harry Lime is so mysterious! He's such an awesome character...I bet that Welles loved playing this role. This is a great film...all Welles fans should watch it! And if you haven't seen any Welles movies yet, start of with this one! I know that Carol Reed is the director but Orson wrote the "cookoo clock" speach not to mention helped out with a lot of the camera shots. Carol Reed is a great director, too. The 3 things which make this movie so great are---
1st: The zither music...- i even downloaded it on Napster!
2nd: Welles as Harry Lime- i love the part when Anna says about her anti-social cat: "He only liked Harry.." and the cat runs up to a guy in the shadows...and then Cotten (Holly Martins) says: "show your face...come out of the shadows.." and then the light shines on Welles' face...and it's Harry Lime! That is a classic scene...especially the way Welles looks at Cotten! it's so great.
3rd: the plot. It's really suspenseful! The whole sewers scene is wonderful.
So, if you want to get turned on to Orson Welles- watch this movie first, to gte warmed up to him...then go on to "The Lady from Shanghai" and "Citizen Kane" and his other films.

A DVD worthy of the movie.

"Spirited Away" is nothing short of a modern classic in a time when new true classics are hard to come by. It's very inspiring and ambitious, while being beautiful and touching at the same time. The movie centers around a little girl who has been forced to work in a bathhouse that serves spirits in order to save her parents from their awful fate that has been brought upon them. However, she makes plenty of new friends along the way, and these supporting characters are just as intriguing as the main character herself. Add upon this the beautiful score and theme song and you have a movie destined to last. The story takes many twists and turns, but it shouldn't be too hard to follow for most people.

As for the special features on the DVD, they really give a fantastic insight into how much labor it required to produce this movie. The "Making Of" documentary is very satisfying and leaves very few aspects about the making of the movie untouched. The "Behind the Microphone" extra introduces you to the voice actors that took part in the English-translated version of the film, and "The Art of Spirited Away" displays the effort that was put forth in producing this movie for an American audience. There's also a feature where you can take a peak at the storyboards for the first scene of the film while the audio track plays underneath. The only feature that's not particularly worthwhile are the Japanese trailers. Admittingly, some of these are very very good. However, some are just too similar to each other and it becomes very tedious to watch these for 30 minutes straight. In any case, the special features are very informative and accomplish their task in giving insight to the making of the film.

This movie is not just for kids, but I'd recommend this to families who might be looking for a new movie that they could watch together.

Traffic - movie DVD cover picture
Finally a great film gets a worthy DVD.

It was easy for me to see why "Traffic" was so highly praised among critics and movie-goers. The movie somehow managed to show us all sides to the drug trade in 2 hour story that feels real because we know it more or less is. The movie flashes back and forth between the locations and characters and each are involved with drugs on one end or the other.
Benecio Del Toro is a Mexican cop on the front lines- He deals daily with dangerious cartel memebers and has recieved offers from the US government to help stop the trafficing of drugs by leading them to wanted criminals.Michael Douglas is great as yet-another suit wearing lead character- This time a politician pushing to up the war on drugs. At the same time his daughter is on a downward spiral of adiction. Her scenes are graffic and disturbing, but they show us the reality of how drugs ruin the lives of the people that use them and their parents and loved ones. Don Cheedle is a California Cop staking out drug dealers and trying to take them down. Katherine Zeta-Jones is a wealthy woman whose husband has been arrested for selling drugs. Though at first a wreck that her husband could be involved in illegal activities, she herself becomes determined to twist the law so he can be released and they can live a rich lifestyle.
Steven Soderberg's directing is fantastic. Each scene has it's own colors- The scenes in Mexico are all washed out with bright yellow and red, which represents the action and the danger of the criminals there. Michael Douglas's scenes are shot in Blue and Green hues, giving us a cold view of the characters and showing us how they don't have a clue of the reality of the drug trade. The film is also shot with hand helds, so it's choppy, moving picture frames feel like a home movie or documentary. It makes it that much more real.
This is a great movie. Don't expect to be entertained- it's not that kind of film. Instead, be educated and moved as you discover the corrupt and all too real world of drugs in today's world.

A Great Ending

If you were as curious as I was about what happened between Rhet and Scarlett then this is a great movie. It is a little different than the book, but it is still good. If you have not read the book then you are in for a real treat because the story will make you want to keep on watching it(even if it is really long).
