Vintage Sayles -- a Haunting Story that Stays with You

This a pretty incredible film, so take my advice and don't let anyone else spoil its surprises if you haven't seen it. It's a quiet and strange film filled nevertheless with a lot of complexity, chills and heart. But part of its magic does lie in the suspense of simply wondering what will happen next, so keep yourself in the dark if you can before viewing.
That said, this is vintage John Sayles that at the same time explores new territory. Like most of his films, it seems at first to be more about character than plot -- but the plot rears its head, and as with "Lone Star," the story is unexpected and flawless. "Limbo" offers wonderful performances (especially those of the three leads), but it also boasts a knockout soundtrack (who knew Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio could sing?) and moments of quiet and eerie poignance. The ending will leave you thinking (and talking) for some time to come.
This DVD is one of the good ones, by the way -- no paltry "extras" of just a trailer or "more movies to buy!" And what a treat to actually get a chance to listen to Sayles on the commentary track -- unlike many commentaries, this one adds layers instead of stripping them. It's a hard film to forget.

W.C. Fields is too funny...

I've always been a big fan of W.C. Fields and I've always been disappointed in the quality (and quantity) of his work that is available. With the 6 short films, Criterion is doing a great job of preserving W.C. Fields for future generations.
I wouldn't argue that some of his other films (such as "Never give a sucker...") are better than "The Bank Dick", but they're not available on DVD (let alone after being restored as this film has been).
I won't rehash the plot, except to say that the notion of a petty criminal always keeping one step ahead from being found out is continually repeated and nobody did it better than Fields. A big part of the enjoyment of watching Field's movies is to find out how he lands on his feet. Field's survives in his world like a cat; with grace and only barely acknowledging what has been going on around him.

Excellent look into the future for its time... a must own!

When a science-fiction film can be considered among the greatest of all films...well, that's an accomplishment. 2001's built-in eternal concept never dates itself; contrarily, the movie probably continues to serve as inspiration to true artists in all kinds of genres. If you haven't seen it, you really ought to get out more often.

Superb technically and emotionally!
Just like all the other reviewers, I found it wonderful. The language was a little ripe to my ears but probably realistic ( one of the heroes, Winters, didn't swear or drink ). I have watched it 3 times now with my 15 year old son. I want him to appreciate what others have done to secure freedom - to appreciate that the true measure of manhood is the willingness to sacrifice for others.

Orange Islands Rule!

Many people say that the Orange Islands episodes were bad. I, however, am certainly not one of them. I honestly think that they were among the best episodes overall: since they are not based on anything concrete (the way the Indigo and Johto League episodes were based on the GameBoy games), the writers were given much more creative license, and they used it with great success. I applaud Nintendo and 4Kids for taking this step since I love these episodes so much. For you out there who are reading this because you aren't sure whether or not to buy this DVD, I say take the chance. If you like Pokemon in general, this should not disappoint. I will concede that some of these episodes were not that wonderful, but the several really great episodes on this disc serve to balance the few that are not. If you already know that you don't like the Orange League episodes, then you probably should not even be reading this in the first place. And for those of you who are Pokemon fans, I think that this disc contains the best of the Orange League episodes.

Contact: The future of DVD?

This is an excellent example of what the DVD format can offer film fanatics. "Contact" was one of the most visually impressive movies of 1997, though it may yield to "Titanic" in its visual effects. The DVD presentation includes three feature-length commentary tracks, in addition to appendices on the various specific scenes.
Common to Robert Zemeckis' "Forrest Gump," the film has the enticing/distracting presence of various television personalities including the morphed/edited/stood in for President Bill Clinton. "Contact" is not hurt by its leads: the driven, believable Jody Foster, or the moral cowboy/guru Matthew McConaughey. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Here's hoping "Titanic" gets the the same special presentation when it comes to DVD. END

The best there is,was, and ever will be, TRANSFORMERS!

I walked into SUNCOAST VIDEO at the mall where I live about a month ago looked at the videos untill I came to the kids videos and I glanced down at the bottom shelf and I couldn't believe what I saw but TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE plus videos from the tv show. I couldn't believe it I had to look twice to make sure I was not dreaming, I grabed the video took it to the counter and bought it, I told the clerk I had been looking for this video for yrs and could never find it, he told me that it was just released on video about a week ago. This movie and the tv series was awsome it along with G.I. JOE and HE-MAN and SHE-RA(yes you heard me correctly I said HE-MAN AND SHE-RA)were my favorite cartoons I watched during the 80's I was in JR high and high school during those times, CLASS of 1985 and proud of it.The sound, story, and voice actors were perfect my favorites are the Dinobots I loved them.If your a fan of the TRANSFORMERS buy the movie and relive some memories and for those of you who have never heard of them then rent the movie and check it out.TRANSFORMERS ARE TRULY MORE THEN MEETS THE EYE.

Big Trouble in Little China (Single Disc Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

This may be perhaps one of the greatest movies ever made. This flick has an all star cast with no medicore performances whatsoever, their at the top of their game. The special effects may be outdated somewhat, but at the time of it's release it was spectacular, and a treat to view. One of the greatest lines ever, '' Dont make me kill you tough guy'', classic!! The only downfall was not releasing a sequel, which was sure to attract an audience, even with todays viewers. Kurt Russell has aged badly, and his acting has become worse but this movie is timeless, and being said it also embodies him and time has become a standstill.
