'Round Midnight - movie DVD cover picture
Come and celebrate the music!

If you've ever been in a small, smoke filled club, oh, 'round about midnight, when the beauty of the jazz being played brings absolute tears to your eyes, well, you'll know why this film is so special. Jazz itself swims in the river of risk, and director Bertrand Tavernier jumps in feet first. Instead of using regular actors to play the parts of these creative people, he does it one better and uses the musicians themselves to tell the story. Starring the remarkable late tenorman Dexter Gordon, we follow the story of a 1950's american jazzman in Paris who is on the slow decline to destruction until he his befriended by a local fan, played wonderfully by Francois Cluzet. Dexter was not the only musician to grace the screen. Others such as Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Hancock, Billy Higgins, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and several others not only provided the music in the film but many played pivotal roles as well. This use of musician that have been there, done that brings a special "realness" that could never have come across by using regular actors. On a side note, this film was unique in quite another way. Almost all of the music that you see being performed in the movie was actually being played and recorded right on the stage. In nearly every other movie the music is rerecorded at a later date in order to take out any "mistakes". This just shows the lengths that director Tavernier was willing to go to bring the true spirit of jazz to the screen. In ending, this film, like jazz itself, will probably not be for everyone. However, if you pass up the chance to see this film you will miss the chance to add two hours of magic to your life!

great movies

I myself, having seen all five Rocky movies think that one, three, and four are must sees. Two is has been forgotten because of its lack of major difference to the first, which is by far the best. Five was more depressing than Mickey and Apollo dying combined due to the riches to rags Pauly bumbling. the Don King spoof was a little out of line too,

Pure Entertainment!

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is an hilarious film drawing fun out of the culture clash between the family of Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian Miller (John Corbett). Toula's family, which exudes every ethnic stereotype imaginable, bewilders Ian's family as the courtship and wedding preparations proceed. In the end they all blend into one, big happy, Greek (?) family.
Jumping from scene, this film, without taxing your mind, is pure entertainment. I don't want to spoil it for you. Just watch and enjoy!

A must-own for your classics collection!

Just when you thought you'd seen everything there is to see on the classic 1939 MGM musical fantasy, this DVD comes along with an abundance of wonderful special features that any film fan will want to include in their library.

It's especially nice that this is a bargain, too!

I thought there was nothing new to learn about THE WIZARD OF OZ, nor did I have much interest in viewing the movie for an umpteenth time, but this DVD changed that. Now I am looking forward to introducing a 4 year old niece to her first viewing of this magical masterpiece and, even if it's not your cuppa tea, you should make sure it's included among your collection!

An Extraordinarily Ordinary Life

Life's a funny thing. You eke out an anonymous existence in ratty apartments at a clerk job at the V.A. hospital, submit ideas for stories about your seemingly mundane life (you can bearly draw a straight line)for an underground comic book and they make a classic movie about you. Harvey Pekar is one lucky fellow that the task of making the movie of his life was left to the gifted directors Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman.

Pulcini and Berman imaginatively tell Harvey's story through interesting devices such as through traditional actors, actual participation by the real-life counterparts themselves or through cartoon panels. At one point in the film the real Harvey Pekar is talking and you can see the actor playing him, Paul Giamatti, laughing in the background. Normally this would be a daunting task for an actor to have the real-life person appear in the same film as you but Giamatti is such a consummate actor that he is more than up to the task. Also providing excellent work here are Hope Davis as Harvey's soulmate, Joyce, and Judah Friedlander as Toby, a nerdy co-worker(and proud of it)of Harvey's. The grimy Cleveland locations also add to the feel of the film as do the use of vintage records on the soundtrack(probably obscure jazz records from Harvey's personal collection). In a perfect world this film should have enjoyed greater box office acceptance than it did like, say, a lesser independent film like "Napoleon Dynamite". I have attempted to recommend this film to other people and it's usually met with a shrug. When I attempt to explain what the film is about it's usually met with puzzled uninterested looks. Some things in life don't come wrapped in pretty paper and a bow. Just ask Harvey.

my favorite movie of all time so far

One of my favorite films so defining of the 80's. A classic teen angst high school movie but with imagination. I think Corey Feldman & Corey Haim made a great team in this. This film makes you want to go back to the 80's as a teenager in high school, watching it nowadays. I completely related to Corey Haims character Dinger. Dinger and Bobby are best friends Bobby falls for Lainie the hottest girl in school and has to convince her that she loves him before the night's over but here's the story in an accident Bobby switches his body with the old man next store living life thru his eyes and vice versus. The same thing with Lainie and the old man's wife. A romantic comedy with a twist. Pay attention to the characters and their bond. A great film about friendship & relationships in high school. An essential to collection for anyone who grew up in 80's cinema. I own the DVD and the soundtrack is great too.
