Classic

This movie is a classic. It has Gere, who plays a billionaire corporate buyer and seller, who meets Roberts, who plays a prostitute, and the falling in love is mutual. Good supporting cast, humorous moments, tears, fears, and cheers. It has a feel good ending, don't worry. Who hasn't seen this movie?!

The Talented Mr. Ripley - movie DVD cover picture
Magnificent

Patricia Highsmith's classic novel has been filmed once before as "Plein Soleil" but this has to be the definitive version. It engages the viewer from the opening seconds as Matt Damon's title character impersonates a friend with an injured hand to the closing seconds when he...well you'd better see for yourself; I don't want to give away the plot like the otherwise excellent documentary on this DVD does.
The colours are warm and vibrant and beautifully evoke post war Italy, although it is more "La Dolce Vita" than "The Bicycle Thief". The film is populated by beautiful people into which the talented Mr. Ripley appears and tries to join but when that proves to be out of his reach his actions take a darker turn. The style of direction is observational and a viewer may need to see the film more than once to get all the nuances in the plot; but there are few better reasons to buy a DVD than for repeated viewings.
I particularly liked the attention to detail especially the red glasses they drink out of while on the yacht; my parents bought identical ones when they went on holiday in Italy in the early 1960's and I still have two of them. But this attention is not fussy as in Merchant/Ivory productions and draws the viewer in to the film rather than distracts from it.
All the perfomances are superb but special credit is due to Jack Davenport as Peter; quite a change from the homophobic Miles he plaved in television's "This Life".
This is a great film in a feature packed DVD that belongs in any serious film lovers collection.

Big Top Pee-Wee - movie DVD cover picture
Something you may not know about Pee-Wee's movies

Let's put it in context. Paul Reubens' original grand scheme was to create a series of five movies, with Pee-Wee Herman growing up a bit more in each film.

"Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" (1985) portrayed Pee-Wee as an innocent kid, more interested in bikes than girls. His "romance" with Dotti was akin to an elementary school crush.

"Pee-Wee's Playhouse" (1986) was a TV adaptation of the Pee-Wee from the first movie.

"Big Top Pee-Wee" (1988) was the second installment of the big-screen series. This Pee-Wee was like a teenager, still filled with youthful hope and wonder, but keenly interested in girls. He'd given up bikes and toys for more sophisticated interests, like botany. And did you know that this movie contains the longest on-screen kiss in cinema history? It's true!

Now--- we can only wonder at the next three stages of Pee-Wee's cinematic development. Believe me, I've stayed up nights pondering this stuff--- Pee-Wee in college? Pee-Wee in the workplace??? Pee-Wee as a swinging bachelor?! The possibilities are endlessly hilarious and I wish Paul Reubens had been able to complete his progressive installments of Pee-Wee's life.

Paul Reubens does have a script prepared for "The Pee-Wee Herman Story," all about the rise and fall of Pee-Wee as an entertainer. I hope some studio somewhere has the innovative foresight to produce this feature. I'm sure it would be absolutely brilliant.

Paul Reubens is one of the greatest comic actors living today. He's an absolute genius of humorous character study. If I were King of the World, or the snotty heir of some wealthy family, I would gladly give him endless funding to complete his projects. I love everything he's done, including "Big Top Pee-Wee", and I've seen "Big Adventure" so many times that I've memorized most of the dialogue.

So please, have an open mind when you see "Big Top Pee-Wee". He's not Peter Pan, you know--- like all of us, Pee-Wee eventually grows up. This film is great fun!

Tales from the Crypt

I have written HBO countless e-mails over the years begging for this dvd set. I never received one e-mail response from HBO. Oh, well. I really did not expect one.
This is one of the best horror shows, period. Some of the top horror/adventure writers and directors wrote and directed these episodes. I believe this series ran for seven seasons. This can be intense stuff, not for children because of the nudity, sex, graphic violence, superb gore effects, language, and more. Some of these stories are truly the stuff of nightmares. They will haunt you.
If you have never seen Tales from the Crypt you are in for a treat, if you are a fan of horror. Go to your local book store and pick-up a trade paperback of the old EC comics these stories are based upon to get a feel for the translation from comic book to television show. Wait until you meet the Cryptkeeper, who introduces each episode, for a meeting of the surreal and insane and just plain weird. And, you will see some big name stars come to fantastic demises. Just wait, you'll see.
Now, where are Tales from the Darkside and Friday the 13th the series. These are two more violent horror series from the pre-politically correct present day.

Five Star Funny

I haven't laughed this hard since "Blazing Saddles". Truly a unique, and very funny movie. Whoever you are, you owe it to yourself to go see this flick, once twice, three times and every once in awhile for life. It is destined to be a classic. One word of caution, don't bring the kids unless they are old enough to vote.

Quality Production

The combination of Angela Gheorghiu and Frank Lopardo is enough to make any production shine. Add to it the incomparable Sir Georg Solti, the surprising, but always wonderful Leo Nucci and the amazing music of Verdi and you have a production that cannot be beaten. Gheorghiu's amazing ability to portray emotion in her face as well as her voice makes her stand out in the opera world. I get so tired of opera singers who can't act. Lopardo does a fine job, his voice more than makes up for his acting deficiencies. It is widely recognized that this performance is what shot Angela Gheorghiu into superstardom and it is well-deserved. This is a Traviata not to be missed, an amazing interpretation of an amazing work.

Bush is an idiot!

Unreal. This "documentary" is filled with so many half-truths and deceptions that is leaves you speechless. Moore is, by his own admission, on a mission to oust President Bush, no matter the cost. Leaving all pretense of balance aside, he picks and chooses and distorts to paint a picture of Bush that ends up looking nothing like the real man. If you are a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, you will love this film. If you are conservative or an independent thinker, you will see this for what it is . . . a cheerleading film for liberal-minded folks.

SISTER ACT

This 1992 is one of the best comedy movies ever! Ever! You can never get tired of Whoopi Goldberg as Las Vegas lounge singer, Delories Van Cartier who becomes Sister Mary Clarence. Deloris witnesses a murder by her married boyfriend (played by Harvey Kietel) and under Reno police orders, she hides out in a covent in san Francisco, California. While there, she goes by the name, Sister Mary Clarence and learns how to adjust to life as a nun and also uses her Las Vegas lounge singing experience to teach her follow nuns in the chior how to sing together as a group.

I loved this movie from beginning to end and is my No. #1 comedy movie of all-time! The center square from the Tom Bergeron-hosted game show, Hollywood Squares (1998-2002) was absolutely hilarious here and so was the whole movie! You will love "SISTER ACT"! Kathy Najimy, Maggie Smith and Mary Wickes also star.

BEST of the dead

After recently buying a Korean copy of DOTD on eBay, and having it lock up in my DVD player, I was i complete anticipation of this new one. It may not be the director's cut, but it certainly is the best version of the film I've ever seen. Transfer is crystal clear, audio is Dolby enhanced w/surround sound if enabled, sountrack errors (like when it slices short after they shoot Wooley) are corrected...All in all, one great DVD for the die hard collector or even the first time viewer. This is the way to watch this film. When the two-disc director's cut comes out, I'll buy that too. This was a sweet movie. Not necissarily the scariest movie ever made (as they advertise), but still one you watch over and over again because you like the characters. Night of the living dead was dry, and Day of the Dead sucked. This was the one to see. Enjoy it
