Charming Movie of an Honest Spirit

Wildland fire air-attack pilot dies in an airplane explosion and is dispatched back to earth by an angel to mentor a rookie pilot. Pete (Richard Dreyfuss)is the spiritual coach and he is not entirely confident about his mission, but he gives it a try and soon gets more than he bargained for when the girlfriend (Holly Hunter) he left behind begins to fall in love with his student. Pete tries to derail the affair with his angelic power, but instead learns about true love when his girlfriend contemplates death in a suicidal air mission to rescue smokejumpers trapped by a massive wildland fire.

This is one of Steven Spielbergs's more humble movies, a contemporary remake of "A Guy Named Joe," and it is a charming and humorous story. John Goodman is Pete's lovable best friend as the air-attack school commander, and Audrey Hepburn has a very nice role as Pete's supervisory angel. The movie features a beautiful backdrop of forest wilderness with wildland fires combatted by smokejumpers and World War II-era attack bombers.

Great Routine!

I'm back on this page because this is the third time I've bought the DVD's and am back buying them for my friend who just had a baby. After reading some of the reviews below I figured I'd chime in. Yes, so obviously they shot them in a small dance studio somewhere, not a TV set or beach. Fact of the matter is the routines are awesome and not devoid of personality like some other squeaky clean made for the day time TV crowd videos. Not to mention they are real workouts. For a full work out I do the advanced dvd, my boyfriend sweats like a dog - but I'll tell you this is the only yoga video he agrees to do with me and things have only gotten better in the sack since. Even the beginner video which I bought for my mom, you break a sweat yet beginners can do all the yoga and feel the benefits fast. Now mom is doing the intermediate video and dad seems happy! Go figure. I love these videos!

Much Better Than I Expected

I saw this movie version only 4 months after finally seeing a professional stage production, though I've been an A.L.Webber devotee for years. Compared to the stage show, I was somewhat dissappointed: The Coat itself was more Amazing on stage and the brothers in ten gallon hats or berets definately added to the parodies of musical genres in the stage show. Donny O. lent more naivite to the Joseph role, though not enough angst to "Close Every Door". The narrator did not add much except her exagerated mugging. And why did they skimp on her costume; to show the difference between skimpy Egyptians and dowdy school teachers? No wonder there was no chemistry between them. I actually though it was a scream to see a very well preserved Joan Collins cast in her usual seductive/cradle-robbing role. It was subtle enough to go over the heads of my pre-teen kids. I liked the device of starting off in the auditorium which relates to the origins of the show, but I found it jarring to jump back and forth in time which could have been saved for the end, just when you almost forget where it started. Otherwise, the music makes it all worthwhile, especially if you can't have orchestra seats. It would be fun to see it on the big screen.

Greatness in a Cute Green Box

This is the only movie that has ever made me so overwhelmingly happy that I cried. I don't cry very often, and I'm not overly sappy, its just that good. My favorite movies used to be Fight Club, American Beauty and The Fifth Element, and now things have changed. Amelie was so nicely made it is hard to immagine not loving it. The cinemotography is top notch and inventive. The story is sweet and relatable while remaining charming and funny throughout. Audrey Tautou is painfully cute. This DVD seems to be the perfect showcase for the movie, the box looks gorgeous and the features blow me away based on description. In order for this to not be worth buying it would have to be a terrible DVD transfer that skips or something, which would be criminal.

Giordano - Fedora / Freni, Domingo, Croft, Arteta, Thibaudet, Abbado, Metropolitan Opera - movie DVD cover picture

This is not a classic opera, for sure -- but BUY THIS for the singing. I can't find anything to nitpick at and that's unusual for me. The singing, production, direction, conducting all seem to be right on the mark. Domingo and Freni have always been 2 of my favorite singers but here we have preserved what in my view is the performance of a lifetime. It all seems so real. Their scene in the last part of Acts 2 & 3 are worth the price of the DVD alone.

Beautiful culture-packed series

This show really surprised me. It's funny, sad, heartbreaking, hip, beautiful, but always very powerful and never something that shoves you away or keeps you at a distance. The show is immediately endearing and you fall in love with the characters. It hardly seemed like TV to me as much as it seemed like another one of PBS' experiments in television, which, ultimately, it turned out to be (had a very short hiatus, came back for a short second season and finished off. Leaving me wondering if it was even a real "series"). Something akin to film, but with more storytelling power, a lot of confidence in it's purpose, and a sometimes subtle, sometimes strong poli-social message, sometimes a satirical and humerous look at family and/or Mexican-American life, but always celebrating the culture and ties of this family, the Gonzales', and always entertaining.
The show boasted a powerful cast of actors: Sonia Braga as Berta, who dies in the first episode but is a crucial part of the series and comes back in flashbacks and memories and influences the physical and emotional journeys of her family (all of whom go through a revelation and transformation in the course of the show). Edward James Olmos as Jess, who is a dysfunctional yet loving father. Esai Morales as the long suffering son Esteban; Raquel Welch as the always humerous Diva of an aunt; and the list goes on and on and on (this show has a LARGE cast) with cameos and a solid plethora of extremely talented character actors.
The atmosphere of the show is incredibly colorful. Filmed in East LA on High definition digital, the show has a very energetic and passionate feel to it, and the art design helps along.
But best of all is the incredibly powerful and very creative writing and execution. Lucky for buyers of this DVD, in my opinion at least, the first season contains the best episodes (the second season was very short, though it included some zingers of episodes).
This show has enormous potential as a college classroom tool for social studies; as entertainment, as a urgent social message, as deep powerful art, as what TV can and should be.
