Capra's and Stewart's Personal Bests

A beautifully crafted film that proved to be the apex of triple Oscar-winner (1934, 1936, 1938) Frank Capra's distinguished career, and the epitome of his cycle of works celebrating the "common man". Mr. Deeds found himself suddenly wealthy, Mr. Smith went to Washington as a Senator, and John Doe became the focus of a socio-political movement; but "Life"'s George Bailey never distinguishes himself outside of his small hometown of Bedford Falls --- his brother Harry is the one who becomes a war hero, and his friend Sam Wainwright is the one who achieves financial success. George's triumph is simply his personal integrity, his code of ethics, and his strength of character --- his goodness, if you will --- during the unexciting course of his ordinary, mundane existence. In this respect, George is more an Everyman than any other Capra protagonist, inviting strong audience identification and response.
In one of the most exquisite performances ever given in an American film, James Stewart is superb as George. It's not an easy role to play because so much screen time is spent focusing on George's subtle reactions to the world around him. One incredible moment comes at the train station when George slowly begins to absorb the news of his brother's recent marriage and new career opportunity, and how his brother's fortune will destroy his own hopes of leaving Bedford Falls and the family business. Stewart's face is extraordinary in this scene, as surprised realization fades into quiet disappointment and finally, gentle graciousness and acceptance. Stewart's tour de force is given strong support by a superb cast of Capra stalwarts, including Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, H. B. Warner, and the phenomenal Beulah Bondi (as George's mother). And Donna Reed, in one of her first romantic leading roles after a number of years playing supporting ingenues and bits, is excellent in the warm but unglamorous role of George's loving wife, Mary.
The Republic Home Video DVD is definitely the edition of this classic to own. Like the LaserDisc before it, the DVD offers a crystal clear, beautifully restored film-to-video transfer which will amaze and delight anyone who is familiar only with the horrible multi-generational VHS cassettes, or the awful colorized version, that were commonly screened back in the late 1970's and 1980's. There are some nice bonus features on the DVD, including a "making of" documentary and the theatrical trailer. This is one DVD that you'll never regret adding to your home theatre collection!
Trivia note: If you're a fan of this movie, try finding a copy of film historian David Thomson's 1985 novel "Suspects" which continues George's story and relates the characters from this movie to many others (did you know that Donna Reed's "Mary Bailey" is actually the sister of Gene Tierney's "Laura"?!, etc.) ... great fun!

Amistad - movie DVD cover picture
powerful, powerful film

A film by Steven Spielberg
"Amistad" is a fact based account of a 1839 revolt by African slaves on the slaveship La Amistad, and the legal trial in the United States over what exactly should be done with them after they were rescued (and imprisoned) on American soil. "Amistad" was Spielberg's first serious work since "Schindler's List" (not counting "Jurassic Park 2" which was also released in 1997), and it should be counting among the best movies of 1997. It is a powerful film.
The central story is that of the African slaves. The movies focuses on one particular slave, Cinque (Djimon Honsou), so that we have someone to be interested in, and so that the human story of their experiences can be told. They were able to overthrow the slavers while on the slave ship, but their captive was able to sail them to America rather than back to Africa. Upon arrival in America, the slaves are promptly captured by American soldiers and imprisoned until their status can be ascertained. As the lawyer for the Africans, Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey) says in the movie, "it is a matter of property." Who owns the slaves? The soldiers who captured the slaves claim ownership as salvage. The slavers claim ownership citing a legal purchase of the slaves in Cuba. The government of Spain claims ownership. The Africans say they are free men. Who owns the slaves? Are they legal property? This central question is what the movie revolves around and works towards answering. We learn the answer early in the movie, but the question is what can Baldwin prove before the courts, and will the courts listen to him?
Steven Spielberg did a good job in showing that this was not just a case of the white man jumping and rescuing the black man. That did exist here, but Spielberg showed just how central and important Cinque was, how his actions and his words were what helped the case for the Africans the most. All the while, Baldwin and Joadson (Morgan Freeman), a freed slave, are entreating former President John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) to become an advocate on behalf of the Africans.
As I mentioned earlier, this is a very powerful film. There is an extended sequence were Spielberg shows the experience of the slave ship and it is so horrible that I don't think I can put words to it. While "Amistad" may not rank quite as high as "Schindler's List" or "Saving Private Ryan" on the list of great movies, this is an excellent movie that deals with a subject usually ignored. This is a slower paced film, with more time spend talking and in the courtroom, but it is a very good one, too.

Utterly Hilarious. Smashing!

A wild, wacky knockabout farce as only the British can do! Rita Tushingham is a sugary little cough-drop tag-along to chum Lynn Redgrave, a saucy loud-mouth "bird" with stars in her eyes for the Pop Scene of the Swinging Sixties. It's silly, it's completely inconsequential, but it's a riot from start to finish. BUY IT!

JUST DESSERTS

when i first viewed ST:roughnecks a few years back early one morning, i knew i was onto something great. previous attempts were made at saturday morning CGI shows, like RE:BOOT and BEAST WARS but never completely caught on. roughnecks was the first of these to fully capture my attention, which it did until the show's end. sadly, the show was missing 3 key episodes before the studio pulled the plug, leaving us fans without true "closure". these dvds are a great way to relive the adventures of rico & gang, and who knows? mybe sony would be willing to finish it for us. hope...

best lexx dvd yet

i'm definately a big lexx fan, but i didnt get hooked on the show until the third season and therefore had not seen the majority of the second season episodes. So lucky day for me i've been seeing them for the first time on this series of dvds. the episodes really start heating up and getting good here on volume 4. everything about the show from the writing to xenia seeberg's performance as eva haberman's replacement for zev/xev has gone up about 10 notches. the special features on this disc were about 80% as good as ones on the other discs, but the real bonus is having these fantastic episodes for your collection. if you are a lexx fan you should already own this! if you've never seen lexx before then you should start it right and get the original 4 movies ("i worship his shadow" "supernova" "eating pattern" and "giga shadow"). As already mentioned they are only available in canada (on dvd... you can buy the VHS version here on amazon under the original title "tales from a parallel universe") but i got the dvds easily enough on ebay. so there you have it. LEXX IS GOOD!

Watch Yourself

As I read some of the negative reviews that were posted on this site I was amazed at how some of these psuedo-movie buffs would throw out certain comments that just do not apply. Let me be as straightfoward about this movie as possible: You aren't really supposed to like anyone in it. Yes, thats right, none of the characters are really good people. I fought with this as I watched it for the first time. I guess that you have to be a bit less than pristine and judgemental to enjoy this one, but come on what a film! The violence was gloriously shot by McQuarrie and Phillipe and Del Toro should be established headliners due to this one. James Caan is outstanding as he has always been. The story is great, the action is better, the acting is surprisingly good, and it combines the essence of so many different genres that it is irresistable. Buy it as soon as you can, it is classic in my book.

Excellent DVD by an Excellent Company

I have watched 4 of these cassettes and I am again amazed at the complexity and organization of a human's headquarters. Every knowledge we have about brain is gained through practical tests and we see a lot of such physology related tests in these videos. They give insight to how neurologist work with brain to understand it. I especially liked the second video telling the story of language learning.

One of my favorite films of all time, waiting for DVD

I have practically worn out my VHS tape of this delightful film, I watch it over and over and never tire of it! Josephine Hull gives a hysterically funny performance which I believe won her an Oscar, if I'm not mistaken. I am anxiously awaiting the DVD, at least I can't wear it out!!
