Never Been A better Movie!

I found a lot of this years teenager comedies pointless. But this one was really enjoyable. The characters are interesting, and the storyline is alright. There are a few slow parts, but it is cute, and funny, and I like it.

"People who eat the earth and those who watch them do it."

Lillian Hellman's story about a rotten den of vipers who reek with greed. Bette Davis and her two brothers (Dan Duryea and Charlie Dingle) want to invest $75,000 each to build a cotton mill in their Southern town, a mill which, because they'll be able to exploit the workers who'll work in it, will bring them a large profit. Only it's Davis's husband (Herbert Marshall) who has the money to lend (in the form of bonds), and he wants no part of this deal. Thus the conflict is established - and the nastiness that results out of it is appalling. Duryea and Dingle steal the bonds, then Marshall dies - and Davis blackmails the brothers for 75% of the business. The story has been interpreted allegorically on a number of levels: as commentary on the exploitation of the poor, and also as a warning against Hitler and his brand of world domination. It should be viewed a number of times to appreciate it fully. All the actors are excellent; it's among Davis's best movies, yet the others are so good, too, that she doesn't stand head and shoulders above them. Hellman's screenplay is masterful. Definitely worth a watch.

Devoutly Domingo

After seeing the first Three Tenors video I became a true Domingo fan. Not only do I have the DVD but I also have the video .. so of course I tracked down everything Domingo. When I came across the video of An evening with Plaacido Domingo I was so happy with the video I had to have the DVD. His choice of songs was great .. and of course there is that magnificent voice. I would say that of all my videos and DVDs this is one of the best.

Hawn Midler and Keaton shine in this terrific comedy

The First Wive's Club is one of my very favorite movies, I have seen it roughly 15 times. I love the friendship theme that permeates through this movie. Other reviews rate it negatively unfairly. The situation in this movie plays itself out in America every day, the film becomes less about getting "revenge" and more about sisterhood, and charity, and bonding together. Midler Keaton and Hawn are three of the BEST and most TALENTED actresses we have in America today. All give stellar performances. Sarah Jessica Parker is also so fun to watch as one of the 2nd wives. The film is hilarious and enjoyable and I would highly recommend it.

Pleasantville (New Line Platinum Series) - movie DVD cover picture
GEE WHIZ!

Pleasantville is a 1950's tv show that paints the lives of people living in a "perfect" world, full of good family values where colors don't exist, where firemen never have to deal with fire but just rescuing cats, where couples sleep in separate beds, where the most physical contact couples have is holding hands or a kiss on the cheek, where people don't swear, where the basketball team never ever loses, where people are just happy living routine lives where everyone loves each other and ...nothing ever happens.
When 2 teenagers from the 90s find themselves trapped into pleasantville by some kind of "luck", the whole world that pleasantville is based on collapses. The two teenagers now in the skin of the two kids of the show, start changing the way people think. Or rather just let people think for themselves. The crowd of pleasantville discovers than there is more than holding hands in relationships, that you can't always win a basketball game and that if you prepare the salad before you make the burger, life will keep going.
This movie is to me a satire on how people have become free and how the impredictibility of life is what living really is. In some ways, the movie makes allusions to the book burnings and the rewriting of history by the nazis, the segregation of blacks from whites, and how people fought to overcome it all to become free. Free to think for yourself, free to be who you want to be regardless of what the society expects of you.
The Genius of pleasantville is how all those underlying very serious subjects are all wrapped into sugar, and turned into a very enjoyable, innocent-like, cute little story.
This is a great movie, very smartly done and very original.

It's Not Just For Kids, Ya Know

All of Jimmy's adventures are extremely smart, witty & funny, not just the ones on this DVD. The characters and voices,(except Nick, he's pretty useless) have a perfect balance in the mix of the episodes. The attention to detail in the animation and dialog is outstanding. It's a shame Jimmy isout-shined by the likes of Toy Story and Shrek. There really is no comparison. Jimmy wins hands down. My 4 year-old nephewintroduced me to Jimmy and I've been hooked ever since.Like I said, it's not just for kids!

The Razor's Edge - movie DVD cover picture
THE RAZOR'S EDGE

I heartily recommend this film for fans of the "classic hollywood" genre. Yes, you can find minutia to criticize as with everthing, but really, for a film to capture the "times" of the 1920's and 1930's, this film does a fine job. If anything lacks, it's the budget. I really wish the production had more money and the director could have actually filmed in Paris and in India. You can tell that all of the scenes were essentially shot in Hollywood on staged sets. But I loved the acting from all of the characters. I think Anne Baxter deservedly earned her academy award. She does not overact at all! She does a beautiful job of acting. And Tyrone Powers, while understated, does a fine job. And Tierney is beautiful and emotes every bit of the cunning and ulterior motives throughout this film. I also thought the actor who plays Maughm does a masterfully subtle acting job that makes you think he really is the actual author!!
What's so masterful about this film is that it focuses solely on the characters portrayed and you want to find out what happens to Larry. I wish the film could have gone into greater detail about Larry's experience in India. It's a bit too superficial but then, for hollywood, what do you expect??
I also care about Larry and I really wanted to see Ann Baxter's character saved. And the important moral lesson is that you can't save everyone in this universe! And not everyone is bound for "success." It's not in the cards. And that's a very powerful message that seems to be forgotten today. We glorify tragedy but films don't explore what Larry explored. What does it all mean???? American Beauty was a more modern attempt at it, and I liked that film.
But The Razor's Edge makes you think about the metaphysical and what your purpose in life is all about. If you are cocky and arrogant, then you will never find wisdom. If you are humble and are filled with questions, you will get closer to enlightenment. Death does make angels of us all and Ann Baxter's character found peace once dead. May seem tragic but life is not fair nor just. Life is not "what should be" but what is."
See this film. It's good for the soul and the mind.
