Outstanding achievement!

"The Godfather" is arguably one of my favorite movie of all time.

The movie opens with Don Vito Corleone's daughter getting married in the post-war period but Vito himself has been keeping himself inside his home. His organized criminal empire is based on gambling, prostitution, and liquor sales but when another mob leader named Sollozo makes a deal to sell narcotics, Vito refuses because of his devotion to the family code of honor.

Sollozo, feeling angered at Vito's refusal orders his assassination but after Vito is severely wounded in a failed murder attempt, his son Michael, who wants nothing to do with the crime is forced into the underworld to protect his father. A vicious cycle of murders happens again and again as mobsters enact revenge against each other.

This movie is just amazing and is a dark and dramatic insight into the damage that organized crime has on the innocent civilians as well as the gang members themselves. One scene was where Michael after killing McClusky and Sollozo flees to Sicily and marries an Italian women only for her to be killed in a roadside bomb planted by hitmen who tracked him down to Sicily.

This and the two sequels are among the greatest movies ever filmed and you must go out and buy them right away!

Walter burns it up

He just smokes the blues with raging riffs and deep felt guitar work. You can see he has really put his heart out into this work. He guitar work is hard and fast at times and soulful at others. And to top it off he really is a nice guy! For guitar players....he tells all about his rig/guitar etc. Money very well spent.

Anything but five stars is blasphemous

Ok, most men will love this movie. Yes, its got a love story blah blah blah, but it has BATTLE, and WAR, and KILLING!!! WOHOO.
Ok, seriously, this movie is one of my all time favorites. If your weak of stomach it may not be the movie for you (or you can close your eyes during the bad parts). There is a lot of war, and they do not hold back the struggles and difficulties of battle within this movie. You feel terrible for those that have to run in on the battle lines and hope to survive the fight.
However you also get a rich storyline with struggle, love, and deception. All the characters are full of life, detail, and history. There are comic acts to help break the tension as well. All bundled into a short 3 hour movie called Braveheart. It is a movie you will not soon forget.

Moulin Rouge Rules

I'm a huge fan of musicals, so I was very anxious to se M.R. AndI was not disappointed, eventhough it's very different from the"traditional" musicals. Set in Paris in 1899 with music from today, this could easily backfire. But it really works. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor are the main reason this works, I think.Who knew they could sing so well? The filming and use of color is also spectacular. And John Leguizamo does a great Toulouse Latrec. The only thing I didn't like was the use of Whitney Houston's "I will always love you" and Madonna's "Like a virgin". Other than that, a great movie that I will definitely see again...

Candy - movie DVD cover picture

Many have written poorly about Candy. Perhaps, they took the movie too seriously because there are many moments that are genuinely amusing: the soldiers doing a dance number and eliciting a tear from their commander, Candy's uncle unplugging his brother as he recuperates in the hospital, the concept of a "Post-Operative Bash", McPhisto's made up stories, and the entire Brando scene. What I think is the main reason for people disliking this movie is that it wasn't what they expected it to be. It's trippy and a little weird at times. The music is also amazing. If you don't like Steppenwolf or the Byrds, perhaps you shouldn't bother. The Bottom line: this movie is a riot if you have the right mindset watching it.

overwhelmingly informative

Most of the reviews here are as long as the movie. We live in a society controlled, for the most part, by corporations. It's in your best interest to learn about them, whether or not you support them. This movie is a documentary in the truest form. It has a strong message, but lets you draw your own conclusions.

The film's packed full of information, and while it has the slew of talking heads, the video imagery that accompanies what is being spoken about is often striking. Speaking of talking heads, some of the leading minds against and for corporations are used in this truly awesome film.

A Study in the Ways of the Imagination

Pandaemonium is one of the better films I've seen in a long time. Some of its themes are much like the ideas (ala Hassan i Sabbah & assassins & hunger for paradise) that have attracted me lately. It is about the poets Wordsworth & Samuel Taylor Coleridge (who wrote "Kubla Khan"). The exploration of the creative force, mingled with the desire to see deep into reality is amazing (Coleridge tried to do it with opium, and both succeeded and kind of destroyed himself in the process). The movie is based on real history but I think it took some liberties to make it a more powerful story. Coleridge also wrote "The Ancient Mariner," and that poem is incredible, I've even more taken by it to see it so lushly explored in a visual sense in how the idea and language came to Coleridge. There's some really funny parts too, like a time when they eat datura and almost fall up off the world (or their perceptions convince them they are about to, and then they start playing with it, realizing the joke, but still pretending that they can fall up.) There's a scholarly literary study on Coleridge published in 1927 called "The Road to Xanadu - A Study in the Ways of the Imagination" by John Livingstone Lowes, a brilliant book, and I wonder if the filmmakers got many of their ideas and details from that extraordinary book.

Quiz Show - movie DVD cover picture
"You Have Twenty-Won!"

Thus spoke Jack Barry, host of NBC's "Twenty-One," the game show which pitted two erstwhile brainiacs against each other on a weekly basis. Millions of Americans tuned in each week to see contestants breeze through subjects that would give many college graduates a headache . . . and win thousands of dollars in the process. But, as is often the case, the seemingly clean-cut, family-oriented show had a dark underbelly. The game was a fix, with the questions tailor-made and spoon-fed to the champion of the moment, whose permanence depended on their ratings momentum.
When Herb Stempel (John Turturro), the self-made reigning champ, is asked to take a dive because his ratings have "plateaued" the producers of the show recruit the young, handsome and brilliant Charles Van Doren (Ralph Fiennes), a member of one of America's most prestigious academic dynasties, to be the new champ. The ambitious Van Doren, eager to step out from under his famous father's shadow, proves to be a media darling and relishes his newfound fame. When Richard Goodwin (Rob Morrow), a crusading staff member from the Congressional Oversight Committee, starts suspecting the scam, he finds Stempel. Resentful at his being replaced, the ex-champ sets about to blow the lid off the scandal.
The brilliance in Robert Redford's direction lies in the flawless way in which he intertwines the four main subtexts in "Quiz Show." First, "Twenty-One" is a metaphor for American life in the 1950's: seemingly squeaky clean and wholesome, but in reality a place where a lot of dirt was swept under the rug.
Second, the admiration that Goodwin feels towards Van Doren, on the one hand, and the resentment and vindictiveness of Stempel, on the other, are an incisive illustration of the tension in inter-cultural relations at the time, particularly between the Jews and the WASPs. This is perhaps best seen when Goodwin, eating a Reuben sandwich at the Country Club, comments to the Van Dorens "they have the sandwich but there doesn't seem to be any Reubens." Van Doren's father (the unforgettable Paul Scofield), recognizing the prejudice within his social circle candidly admits, "Touche!"
Third and, in my opinion, most poignant, is Van Doren's struggle to make a name for himself. The film shows us some of the lengths to which some sons will go to be recognized on their own terms and for their own achievements. The flight of fancy comes crashing down when, in a heartbreaking scene, Van Doren's father announces: "Your name is mine!"
Finally, there is television. Paul Attanasio's brilliant screenplay evens out the blame on what happened between the Machiavellian, corporate machine behind television (particularly seen in Martin Scorsese's razor-sharp performance as the show's sponsor) and the audience, for which television was, is and probably always will be a blank screen for them to project both the best and the worst in themselves. With top-notch performances, photography, editing and writing, "Quiz Show" finds Robert Redford in top form, a master student of the flaws in human nature.
