The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

The story, aside from the movie was an amazing one. It is always terribly difficult to make a movie from a book or vice versa. Someone once asked me how true the movie was to the book, and I merely answered, "This isn't the movie of the Lord of the Rings, its a movie ABOUT the Lord of the Rings." There just wasn't enough time to fit in characters like Goldberry and Tom Bombadil because they aren't exteremely intrical to the story. I was in awe of so many of the actors. I had read the books many times before, and never could find a true interpretation of some of the characters and when I saw them on the screen, I said "oh, thats what they look like." The scenery and sets where amazing, unlike anything I'd ever seen before. The costumes (why moulin rouge won out on costumes escapes me)I was a bit disappointed in many people for disliking Cate Blanchett's performance. I'd read many people thinking her to be too ugly to be Galadriel. CATE BLANCHETT IS NOT UGLY. I thought that is exactly what The Lady of the Golden Wood looked like. She filled Galadriel's shoes perfectly. I think in many ways, even more than perfectly. I do have to point out, though the entire universe knows it, Ian McKellen was the PERFECT Gandalf. Elijah Wood was also a great Frodo. Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn, Boromir, Sam, Pippin, and Merry were all also amazing in their roles. Saruman was awesome. Just thought I'd throw that one in.

"Nicky, don't let him park the car."

Wonderful, brilliant and light hearted funny movie with a list of stars of exceptional talent.I saw this film when it came out and it's still one of my favorites today. There are so many wonderful great one-liners that you'll find yourself repeating them to your friends. The comedy timing is perfect. Get this wonderful gem of a movie, sit back and enjoy. Well worth the money.

one of the best movies i have ever seen and that's good

beatiful Girls was written and directed very well. The return of Timothy Hutton to his home town(small town) is an exact replica of what i go through every time i return home to my small town. The friends never change and neither does the town. The only one who changes is Timothy Hutton(Willie). It was an excellent movie for a standpoint of friendship and loyalty. Also presents both the typical male and female perspectives on the opposite sex. A very funny movie with quick-witted dialogue.

Timeless films that will last last on DVD

FINALLY! Five of Fred & Ginger's best films are heading to DVD, getting the treatment that only a class-act like Warner Bros. can give them.

A pal who works at a famous film restoration lab in L.A. told me that WB has been working on these wonderful movies for nearly two years, in many cases, using the original negative (when available) as their source material.

This means they're gonna look great..and it was worth the wait.

Each great film has been given a new documentary, some have commentaries, and most (all?) have shorts or cartoons.

No one lavishes as much love & intelligence on their classic releases as Warner does. I'm sure these will not disappoint!

" cuffs!"

Doctor Zhivago (Two-Disc Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Doctor Zhivago and Postmodern Political Correctness

In our so-called "postmodern" period, with its pestilence of political correctness, David Lean's Doctor Zhivago remains resoundingly resonant. As Yuri Zhivago learns from a Red partisan commissar, "All men will be judged" on their political reliability. Interrogated by the cunning, ruthlessly politically correct Peoples' Commander Strelnikoff, "What will you do...?", Yuri Zhivago answers, "Just live."
A superb cast's unforgettable performances, John Box's evocative production design, Robert Bolt's letter-perfect screenplay, David Lean's gripping macro and microscopic contrasts of the personal and the political, Phyllis Dalton's meticulous costuming, and Maurice Jarre's haunting score powerfully combine to touch us in our tenderest parts, and to leave us as thoughtful, and as hopeful, in 2002 as audiences were at film's 1965 debut.
The film's sole want was for 70mm Panavision, but producer Carlo Ponti either could not, or would not, afford Lean that capacity. Despite this precondition Lean crafted, in the face of contemporary reviews that were either lukewarm or condescending, that most curious, engaging creature of film immortality: an enduring cinematic triumph that audiences loved then and go on loving now.
Though other movies, in purely technical terms of film medium, can be judged superior, Doctor Zhivago remains my favorite because, through brilliant interplay of the film's vast scope and intensive personal focus, it captures perfectly our human experience. Doctor Zhivago distills the classical three-horned dilemma: parade in groupthink lockstep with fashionable ideologues, opportunistically go along to get along, or march to the beat of the different drummer.
As much as I wish to see myself as the passionate, loving Lara, or as much as men might wish to see themselves as the insightful, honorable Yuri, the wholeness of Doctor Zhivago's embrace embarrasses each of us into acknowledging the less than redeeming traits each of us must, in truth, admit. For that solitary, compelling reason Doctor Zhivago binds us, and those who come after us, in its thrall.

Best DVD ever...

While I enjoy the DVD versions of the movies with lots of visual and sound effects. My favorite DVD movies are black and white movies. The black and white seems alot crisper than the video copies. I was waiting for this one to come out on DVD. This movie is wonderfully acted and the cinematography is excellent. Its a shame that this movie was made before Panavision. I do agree with some of the reviews that this movie is slow but there are more to movies than car chases.
Excellent flick.

Indecent Proposal - movie DVD cover picture
A Masterpiece in Understanding.

What if...? The two words that define almost everyone's life. What if I married so & so instead...What if that job was mine...What if there was a perfect life...? And on & on. Relationships, marriage, in particular, young relationships and marriage are plagued with the question, or the "two words." Indecent Proposal is a masterpiece. An exploration, if you will, into the power of money, trust, love, respect, and above all...What if? The movie casts three of the best stars of their time, Robert Redford, Woody Harrelson, and Demi Moore at the top of their game. It brings us inside the marriage of Diana and David, but also, into the world of wealth, power & deceit. Still, it also sends a shiver to see Redford's character as not being flat, but lonely. His motives, proposal, and pursuit may irritate us, yet we come to understand Mr. Gage and sort of feel sorry for him. As we root for Diana & David to reclaim that lost innocence of love, which in reality & in the movie as well, is unrecoverable, we find a new meaning in forgiveness, faith, and the pitfalls that plague even the best parts of ourselves. This one belongs in your collection and your heart.
