Wit - movie DVD cover picture

One of the most mesmerizing films ever -- and I'd never heard of it. Well, no wonder! Emma Thompson, Mike Nichols -- and Audra McDonnell as a gift to patient care. This is the best film I've seen this year; and I see a lot of movies and read a lot of books -- I just don't keep up with theater, obviously.
This movie is not for the faint-hearted, although I didn't lose it until an unexpected act of kindess and wisdom.

Guilty Pleasure

While I hate to admit it this is my favorite show. It is my weekly indulgence. I just love all of the drama. My little sister bought me this DVD set and I am so happy she did, because I can't get enough of the OC and I know in a few years I'm gonna bust out these DVDs and take a look back at the season that started it all.

If you've never watched the show buy these and start watching. You won't be sorry!

Good sequel.

I thought this was a good sequel to a great movie. The Predator is back( Don't ask who brought him back to life, I have no idea) and this time, his in L.A., wich just so happens to be over run by gansters. When the Predator comes in, well, we should know what happens. There is a cop named, umm, some thing and he is trying to stop the Predator. I thought this was a cool movie. Is it better than the first? No, the first one had better charactors, a better setting, and the Predator look a little cooler. The thing I liked about the sequel was it tryed to bring something freash and new in. You'll like this movie if you liked the first. Can't wait for Predator 3 and Alien vs. predator! Look in the trophy room for the skull of another popular sci-fi charactor!(Hint: He will be invalved with the Predator's future life, okay, I know I just gave it away, but you'll like the surpires anyway!)

The Wicker Man - movie DVD cover picture
A low budget classic!

FILM: I stumbled upon The Wicker Man purely by acccident-never heard of its existence until I did a search for another movie on ... and this movie was recommended in addition to the one I was looking for. I looked at the positive reviews and decided to give it a shot. Boy, I'm glad I did! The Wicker Man is an extremely interesting and thought provoking film despite its very low budget; in fact, because of the limited budget the movie comes off more realistic, and almost has a home movie feel to it. But the most memorable thing about The Wicker Man is the originality of the script--I have never see another movie like it or at least one that is as well-made. The beautiful--and slightly sinister--locations where the movie was shot will have you yearning to visit Scotland and looking to find the GREEN MAN BAR, where many of the scenes were shot. Despite being pegged as a cult movie, the film takes its subject matter very seriously and deals with it in a very challenging manner; in lesser hands the movie probably would of come off like a bad joke and instantly forgotten. There is a reason why people are still talking about the film today. The movie starts with Sgt. Howie(Edward Woodward)coming to Summer Isle, which is located off the coast of Scotland, to investigate the complaint of a local resident about the disappearance of a young girl, Rowan Morrison. When he gets there and starts to ask questions about the girl, he gets nothing but evasive and elusive answers from the citizenry, obviously not embracing the presence of an outsider in their close-knit community. The more Sgt. Howie investigates the more he sees that the people of Summer Isle are devotees of a pagan culture that worships phallic symbols and believes in free love and reincarnation. All of this comes as an abomination to the deeply Christian--if not slightly outdated and prudish--values of Sgt. Howie. Despite his disgust at all of this, little by little he starts to piece together some of the hard to find clues, and begins to see an more ominous picture developing--Rowan Morrison and how her disappearance relates to the failure of the crops which the community depends on to live. All this leads up to and ending that will send chills up and down your spine.
Though this movie is not going to appeal to everyone's tastes, I found the story of the survival of a pagan culture in modern times and how it relates to Christianity to be a very interesting study on the way we treat people whose religious beliefs are different than our own. But besides those more profound themes, the movie also contains elements of horror that are very subtle but just as real. Edward Woodward gives a solid performance as the repressed Sgt. Howie, and Christoher Lee is excellent as the smiling Lord Summer Isle. Through an ingenious script, solid acting, and loads of atmosphere, it's no wonder the movie has since become a cult classic.
DVD: I have the limited edition version, which features the theatrical version and the longer version without all the cuts. I'm probably in the minority here, but I like the shorter version better. While the longer version gives you some more background information on Sgt. Howie and Lord Summer Isle, it also slows down the film somewhat compared to the shorter version. I was able to piece together most of the missing pieces on my own from the shorter version, while enjoying the quicker pace. Plus, the missing parts in the longer version are not up to the visual standard of the rest of the film and stand out awkwardly.
The DVD also includes a little documentary on the making of the film, which any fan should not be without. It is very informative and includes interviews with most of the major players in making the film, and how hard it was getting it released.

Pure love has no bounds

Exquisite in it's own right. This was your classic portrayal of a closeted "Bunk" mate acting out his transgressions thus sealing the demise of the main character.
It proves to show that love has no boundaries and what lengths people would go to preserve that boundless love.
A very compelling melodrama that makes me wish I was the one getting swept off of my feet.
This is a MUST SEE and MUST BUY!

Brilliant ensemble cast!

Although I do not think Traffic fits as the "best movie of the year", it is definately worth paying for. It is a raw, fast paced movie about drug trafficing, staring actors like Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Benicio Del Toro and many others, especially my favorite TV actor, Topher Grace of That 70's Show. The casting involved in this movie is the best I've seen in a long time. It is one of those rare movies, all of the actors are perfectly casted to their characters! I think this movie stands out from others that way. If you're not really interested in the story, see it for the acting.

The Other Side of Prague

For those of you who have never been to Prague or those who like to learn about eastern europe this is a good insight. i've been there several times and have witnessed first hand what this picture is about. it is a documentary that describes in detail the horrific and dreary lives of those less fortunate in post-communist czech republic. the things that young boys have to do to survive in the big city, having come from small villages outside Prague--this is not a documentary for children. This is a documentary for those who like to learn about all facets of life around the world. Picture quality is not as bad as previous reviews would lead you to believe. I think if you buy it and don't like it you could donate it to a local university's socialogy department.

The greatest christmas movie ever!!! (for adults of course)

Forget Billy Blanks and 8 minute abs, just watch Bad Santa and you are guaranteed abs of steel. This is a well rounded movie it made me laugh so hard my stomach hurt...and it made me cry becuase I laughed so hard. This movie is a wonderful change in the genre of Holiday movies, a Darker, foul-mouthed change, and it is great. Billy Bob thorton plays kind of a super hero who is a drunk, profanity spouting mall santa by day the day and a Safe-cracker by night. In this Dark Comedy you will see santa doing things that you would never, and could never picture him doing, like beating up kids, little people (midgets)and drinking and having sex when ever and where ever possible. The co-stars are hillarious, and the story is great. Honestly, I watched 6 movies in the past 3 months and Bad Santa was 3 of them. Women enjoy this movie too, as a matter of fact my girlfriend introduced me to the film and she loved it soooooo much she watched it 4 times. Bottom line if you like dark comedies, enjoy laughing at other peoples misfortune, or just want to work on your sixpack, you will love bad Santa. If you did'nt see it yet, go see it, if you did than see it again (as if you already have'nt). I have'nt laughed that hard in a long time. I cant wait for this to come out on DVD so that I can own it forever!!!~Savage Mowan
