Both versions are superb

I own both editions and let me tell you I can't get enough of this movie. It's one of the most powerful, moving, emotional films I've seen. It shows how a prejudice, hypocritcal society can make a person feel bitter about themself and the parents.

Loved It

In my opinion anything that shows the ability for one culture to come together with another is a movie worth seeing. Yes I know how the movie ended, but please note that the main character went into the movie thinking that the Samurai were savages like he was led to believe. However, he came out of the whole ordeal with new respect for not only another culture that was indeed not savage at all, but he also came away with a new respect for himself. He learned a great many things from the Samurai, and it helped his soul heal. Ok, the fight scenes were great too!

Nemesis

I did not go to see the film when it came out, I must admit I was put off by the very negative remarks about the film. BUT I did buy the DVD and I must say I do not understand 'WHY' there were so many negative remarks. I enjoyed the film, infact I have seen it twice now. I sincerely hope that they do all come together again for one more film.

Read it! Just read it!

I read the book before the movie was released. People who saw me reading it had never heard of it. I made the mistake of lending it out and I never saw it again. Pity. I really want to read it again.
I am amazed at the negative comments about this book, especially those who thought that the story line was too improbable. Of course it was improbable. The book is a fable. It was intended to be outrageous and unbelievable. No one complains that Star Wars was improbable. Let it go.
Gump is a football star, an astronaut, a politician, a rock star, a chess master, and a scholar. He is also a self-described idiot. The story is completely outlandish and unbelievable. Groom does not want you to believe that these events could have ever happened. It is pure escapism and fun. It is like reading your nuttiest dream.
As an extra bonus, Hollywood took the story and made an excellent movie. How many times have you enjoyed a movie as much as the book? That's rare!
Still, the book is much different from the movie. So if you haven't read it, you're missing out.

the best french film

I spend a lot of time watching french films and I have to say that this is one of the best ones I have ever seen. It is a thriller, it is suspenseful, it is an action movie, and it is a romance. The plot is fantastic and the ending is incredible, not to mention the special effects.

Richard Harris - a great performance

This movie is adapted from "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White. And you probably know the story - boy becomes king, king is betrothed in an arranged marriage, Lancelot pops in....It is _nothing_ like the book but it does have its good points.
One is Richard Harris' over the top performance as King Arthur. He, much in the manner of Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady", speaks his songs as opposed to singing them. Suprisingly, it actually works very well. It's not the "feel good movie" of all time, but it is a good one about flawed individuals - and it was said to be President John F. Kenndy's favorite Broadway play.
So if you're interested in seeing a movie that will make you think about great leaders' errors in judgement, along with the pagentry of court life, this is a movie for you. I recommend it highly.

Cool

What's with all the critical carping about Da Vinci Code meets Indiana Jones? After all, who did Dan Brown crib from, to say nothing of the Lucas-Spielberg boys. Basic plots and conundrums go back as far as unrecorded history / storytelling. The real points are elsewhere, not in the vehicle (which is only a conveyance, after all).

Here's a nice adventure yarn which wears its cinematic/literary influences one way or the other depending on your personal taste and preference. I took it as a well done, tongue-in-cheek if not particularly deep bit of popcorn entertainment.

Yes, the music is overcooked John Williams. Yes, the historical elements are skewed, to say the least, when they aren't outright inaccurate. Read Walter Isaacson's wonderful biography of Benjamin Franklin, and also his companion volume of Franklin's writings - including the infamous Silence Dogood letters, and you'll see just how easy it is to take a few facts, turn them inside out, and then come up with a thoroughly preposterous tale. Franklin, by the way, was sixteen years old when he wrote these pieces as part of his early adventures in the printing business to which he was then apprenticed.

But, then again, how many people who don't live in Philadelphia understand anything about either the city's revolutionary period history, or of its most famous citizen?

Just enjoy the film for the fluff it is - then go and do your homework. You're bound to wind up learning more about American history than you know at present - and that's worth it by itself.
