Black as comedy comes

MAN BITES DOG is, quite simply, one of the blackest comedies ever made. The documentary following a charismatic serial killer about his daily business contains some of the most biting satire and perverse irreverence ever put on film. It's also perfectly scripted, directed and acted on a non-existant budget (most of the cast are members of the crew, who made the film whilst at school). Years before NATURAL BORN KILLERS, these Belgian students made a far smarter and wittier satire of media violence, that challenges our society to look at its morbid fascination with the macabre dead in the eyes. Perhaps you will not like what you see of yourself from this perspective.
This remains the only Belgian film I've seen, and one of the few Belgian cultural artefacts of any nature. A country that can produce a masterpiece such as this surely can't be as bad as everybody says :))

Why hasn't Braveheart come out on DVD yet? This is one of my all-time favorite movies and I would love to see it one the DVD format. I don't understand, they'll put the worst movies on DVD now, why not put a classic like Braveheart.

Towering Genius

I get goosebumps even thinking about SRV's Austin City Limits appearances. They are simply "the" finest live music performances captured to tape. SRV, like the great masters of art before him, had so far transgressed the limits of his medium that he no longer merely played the instrument but bent it to his will. Unfortunately for us SRV appeared in the production-poor 80's; fortunately for us, we have excellent live recordings to if not replace then bring into perspective his real greatness. Buy it because you can't deny it.

The Alien Legacy - movie DVD cover picture
They're outta there, oh yeah, they sure are!

This is a collection of one of the finest horror/sci-fi/alien(!) films on this planet :-) and because they are all done from different directors, you will find an interesting mix of dealing with generally the same subject - very powerful, very brutal and very scary looking aliens.
While the first two movies deliver a lot of action, which is both intelligent and very, very scary, you have to look at the following 2 films separately.
Alien 3 is a very intelligent movie, where obviously a lot of thinking has been done before doing it. After you have watched the first to parts of this astonishing legacy, you will be totally surprised by the way the 3rd part tells the beckoning story of Ltd. Ellen Ripley. The way the camera moves is the first thing that will strike you as totally different (or alien) to the first parts. In the final scenes of the movie, the camera goes up and down, racing down semi-dark tunnels, whirling, spinning ... you almost hear it breathing hard, because it is running so fast, almost feel the lungs pumping, making your tv's screen vibrate - well maybe the camera'd have to be organic to show these symptoms of exhaustion, but YOU will definitely feel it. The camera / YOU is / ARE CHASING an ALIEN anbd you're right on to it. The movie is very fast-paced, very sinister, and very rich of new ideas. Although I liked the first two films more, I still enjoy watching Aliens 3. To be honest, when I watched it for the first time, I did not like it at all and rated it below the three other Alien films, but THIS MOVIE DEFINITELY NEEDS A SECOND VIEWING (in any case, whether you like or dislike it; the 2nd v'ing probably is not that much of a problem if you already liked it when watching it for the 1st time!). Anyway, after having seen it on dvd, at home, totally relaxed, and absolutely happy about having purchased this dvd set ...witty, well-paced, fresh, and just very thrilling.
Alien Resurrection maybe is the weakest of the whole series, but that does not mean it is a bad movie - only compared to the other 3 it is just not as good, but hey, for the 3rd sequel this an achievement to be pretty proud of (not many sequels, if there are any except these movies, manage to deliver a good follow-up to the original story while remaining good movies). As a stand alone film - which it certainley is, like all the other Alien flicks - I'd give it a 4 minus (but only a very small minus - and after all, a minus, if you look at its optics, is just a plus missing a vertical minus!). With Alien Resurrection, I love the film's idea: Ripley has been cloned, there is an Alien queen again, the US gov is secretly growing Aliens - hehe, cool! ....
In the first to movies E. Ripley is more like an innocent victim of a sudden alien invasion with a strong (and successful) survival instinct, while in A 3 and 4 she is a very tough soldier, stern, ruthless, and very dangerous.
Especially in Alien Resurrection Ltd. Ripley's appearance shows a terrifying change: Ripley is, because she has been cloned with an Alien inside her, half human, half Alien! That's just a thought that makes a very cool movie. Chilling is no term to describe Ripley's characteristics in this movie. I plea for ICY!
Now imagine, 4 cool films, on dvd (!), right - that means high screen resolution after a terrific picture enhancement, superior sound quality - life's a piece of sweet chocolate cake!
The only thing you could get grumpy about is the very modest addition of special features. To be honest, extras are pretty poor. Even the Special Ed of "Aliens" (the 2nd part) does not contain extras worth to earn a dvd the name "Special Edition"! But there is something else too, this box-set misses: the fifth dvd! .... I am sorry, but there are too releases of this box set, but only one available in the U.S. That's the Region 1 4-disc edition, while in Europe, where I come from, there is quite an other release: the Region 2 5-disc release, the fifth disc containing almost two hours (if I remember correctly - I watched it some time ago) of interviews and behind-the-scenes. ....

5 Stargate SG-1 Episodes

Although I highly recommend any purchase of Stargate SG-1 episodes on DVD - and this release includes one of my favorites: The Nox (it also includes on of my least favorite : Brief Candle), I would strongly recommend opting for the season 1 boxed set instead. Currently on Disc 1 and 2 are available seperately, but the boxed set spans the entirety of the first season. Also, the video quality suffers some on this release because 5 episodes are included, but the degradation does not make it any less worthwhile to own. The complete listing of episodes are: 4) The Broca Divide 5) The First Commandment 6) Cold Lazarus 7) The Nox 8) Brief Candle.Highly Recommended - But STRONGLY recommend the Boxed set instead.

Glory Is Glorious

Before I saw this movie I didn't know much about the part of African Americans in the Civil War. Even though we usually think of the Union as being anti-racist in the beggining of the war African American soliders were only allowed to do laborous activities like digging graves. They were even treated like slaves, if they disobeyed they got whipped. They were also treated like inferiors or like they were useless. But Glory is the story of a regiment of African American soliders in the union army that overcame all obstacles and proved to the world that courage, dedication, and honor are all qualities that are not based upon skin color. They fought to not be denied to use thier abilities to fight for thier country and for thier rights. The evolution that the soliders make from labeorers to some of the most honorable soliders is shown with great care in emphasizing the emotional and spiritual changes that they had to undergo. One reason this movie is so good is that is makes you feel like you know every single one of the soliders and watching this movie can make you very emotional. I have to say that I shed a few tears. I don't want to ruin the movie for anyone by giving away any of the plot but I suggest that you go see Glory. Glory is Glorious and if you don't want to take my word for it watch the dvd yourself.

Surprising and Fun Romp!

This newest DVD addition to the BBC Walking With Dinosaurs series and is surprisingly good!
Like the best of Jurassic Park but without all the subplots, Nigel Marven is a Jeff Corwin / Crocodile Dundee like character who time travels to prehistoric times (how he does it is never explained but that is really irrelevant) and brings us right with him into the adventure.
He gets into all kinds of interesting confrontations with dinosaurs on land, air, and sea and tries stuff that no sane human would attempt. Although some of his bravado backfires on him, this makes the whole premise at somewhat more believable.
The integration of live action, animation, and CGI is simply amazing. Taking some 21st Century technology with him, one scene has Nigel in an ultra-light flying amidst huge pterosaurs. Another has him actually catching a small dino in his "camp".
This is certainly the lightest episode but at the same time perhaps most interesting one in the series. Highly entertaining and you might even learn something new too!
A must see for dino-fans!

October Sky - movie DVD cover picture
Trite like Picasso is trite

Folks, ignore the person who wrote something to the effect that October Sky was trite and predictable and that "...the film followed that same pattern we've all seen a hundred times before: poor boy from a dying town has a dream, and with the help of that one special teacher who makes him believe in himself...etc., etc., etc." Yeh, like we can ignore Picasso because we seen paintings of people a hundred times before. The fact that the movie's premise is so familiar and yet remains interesting, subtle, and inspirational, is all the more evidence for the talent of the filmmakers and lack of discernment among Academy members.
