Better than we remembered.

Forty years old and still high quality entertainment. The qualityof the images and sound are better than we ever saw or heard on those primitive TV sets of the 60's. The acting is clearly for fun and the dialog is laced with good comedy moments. The talent of Blake Edwards, Henry Mancini, the actors and musicians, is clearly on display. You will watch it again and again. Whenever there is nothing worth watching on the networks or dish we enjoy Peter Gunn all over again.

Freaked is freaky!

hahaha ok that was pretty bad, but this DVD isn't, my friend! All I can add to what's already been said is the enormous amount of extra goodies in this 2 disc dvd package. I can list the stuff they put in but it would take forever and I really need to take a dump, so just scroll up, ok? It's all good though, so don't worry about...oh God it's coming a turtle...peeking it's head out...on a warm spring day.

The rehearsal where they play out the whole movie in some room is really fun to watch, when the actors are fumbling around, trying to remember their lines, pretending to pick up stuff, etc.

This is a movie where you love it or hate it, but what's admirable is the amount of extra stuff they crammed into here for a little known movie. So, if you're an extras freak (pun intended) then you will go freaky over this freaky dvd that is freaked, you freak.

Fantastic quality, and Holmes is dependable as usual. This TV series is the best. I am waiting for the rest - a boxed pack of the entire series would be awesome.

All time favorite

I watched this movie when it first came out, a long time ago. I was thirteen years old and I went and saw that movie three times. That was a very intense story. Even at age thirteen when I couldn't understand everything that was going on I knew Gladys loved the character played by Kurt Jurgins, I loved him too! I was raised in Hawaii and marrying someone of another race was a big possibility for me. Even more than forty years later I can watch that movie and have a good cry. Enjoy it, movies back then left a lot to the imagination and that is the best way.

Amarcord - Criterion Collection - movie DVD cover picture

May I confess something? Fellini is one of my favorite directors-I really could live in a Fellini film and be quite happy. I love the people, the places. Ok, sometimes not-so-nice things happen, but that's true of anybody's life, no? If I could live in Amarcord, I would go there like a shot.

Here's the confession-this is the Fellini film closest to my heart. I know we're supposed to like 8 1/2 better, or even La Dolce Vita, but Amarcord has all the bitter sweet quality of a memory told by a good friend and great storyteller, intimately, over a glass of red wine.

Hear the one about the about the old, irascible Grampa? Gramps stepped out of the house and got lost in the fog...just steps away from the front gate. Frightened and disoriented, Gramps wonders if he is alive or if he has passed over into death. Suddenly, he stops and gives a rude gesture to death, and claims, "If this is death, I don't think much of it."

Hear the one about Uncle in the looney bin? Took him out for a ride in the country, and he peed his pants. Just forgot to unzip! Then, at the farm, he climbed a tree and threw rocks at people, staying up there all day, screaming, "I want a woman!" It took a miniature nun from the asylum to get him down.

There are so many scenes of such distilled beauty, it is as if Fellini had boiled down the sauce until only the most precious elixir was left-that which was a distillation of his own life, most potent, most true.

The town beauty, the town historian, the town idiot, the town "playboy" (loser) the mother, the father, the govenment, Mussolini, Fascism, the sea, the prostitute, the boys, the fantasies of the boys, the church, the snow, the rain, the fog. I love this film truly.

The boys dancing in dreams in the fog. The empty grand hotel. Grandisca's wedding. The father biting the hat that had been pissed on. Tita and the cigarette shop lady. (Ohmigosh, you have to buy the film for that scene, alone!!!)

My crazy beloved Fellini! Dear friends, you must have this film.

Excellent movie

What makes this movie excellent in my mind is the rich character and feel of the south that it portrays. I really enjoyed the scenes with the dogs and that pig. LOL. Anyone who's grown up in the country, or esp. the South, can relate and will find this very charming. I think the relationship between the uncles and the kid is quite fitting. How can you go wrong with Robert Duvall? You simply can't. What a great movie.
You won't find the texture of this film in many others today. What a nice change!

Seeing the movie again on this new "SPECIAL EDITION "DVD brought back some fond memories for me. I can still remember my folks taking my brothers and sisters and me to see ROCKY at the the old WOOD theater back in '76. I can still hear the thunderous cheers from the crowd during the climactic fight scene. It holds up very well and I do think that this is Sly's best film. I think that as is the case with many of his films, all of his characters just seem like cardboard cut-outs of Rocky Balboa. Of course as a young boy back then all I wanted to see was more fight sequences, now, 25 years and one film degree later, I have leaned to love the movie for more than its boxing footage. The fact that I live just outside of Philadelphia, where the movie was shot, only enhances my appreciation of the film. The on-screen chemistry between Stallone and Talia Shire is so much more "real" than most relationships seen at the movies today. As for the bonus material featured on the disc, the standout commentary by the director, John G. Avildsen, and others is well done The 8 minute tribute to actor Burgess Meredith and the 3 minute tribute to Cinematographer James Crabe are both needed and welcome. Lastly, hearing the finale in DOLBY DIGITAL is awesome! WOW!

Black leather clad Elvis belting out his classics unplugged.

Elvis never looked or sounded better. Reunited with his original band from the Sun Studio days, Elvis sits in an informal "unplugged" style setting and rips through some of the classics that made him a star. He reaches back to his country/blues roots to bring out the raw power of the kind of rock and roll he created. He's at his best when he has to improvise, especially when he wants to stand but the mic is too low. Elvis is like a fighter trying to unleash the musical fury inside.

The Classic Movie that All Anime Fans should start with.

First off, this is a CLASSIC MOVIE, its animation is not THE BEST, i.e. if you compare it to the cream of the crop in the animation world, and I wouldn't expect it to be, infact I would dearly hope so, since this movie is like more than a DECADE OLD, i.e. this is a classic, in the sense that it is one of the animes that started it all. Vampire hunter D was the movie that started me on anime and for good reason. It showed me the possibilities that anime presented, that american movies couldn't supply.
First off, if you check your local vampire section for decent movies, you'll come up with one, and that one is Interview with a Vampire. You may also find something called "Kindred" which is a television series and expands on vampires, but it doesn't do it on their myths, like Vampire Hunter D does. Vampire Hunter D, since it is an anime, is able to paint a picture of a world in Torment, making it theasable that this could truly be a world, where goblins, vampires, and werewolves could thrive and do.
NOW THE STORY The story basicaly starts off with a girl Getting bit by the head vampire that lives in a castle just outside of the village. Next, we see a shot of D(formaly known as Vampire Hunter D, and by the end of the movie, you'll know what D stands for even if you only know just a little bit about vampires, but if you don't...oh boy) on his robotic horse. For this story is not based in the past, but in the distant future. Some how, the girl peeks D's interest about vampires, being that she was bitten and he has a vengance to kill them, though not all of them...
It also seems that D has a certain curse/gift, that we know not where, how, or why he has it. But this movie does keep you interested. Plot, yes, but being this is a monster movie, it has done splendidly well. A notch done from Interview with a Vampire, but a definite notch or two up from anything else out there.
THE REALLY IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER If you are still heasitant about buying this video, send me an email, and I'll tell you more about the story, I was keeping most of it out, since its terrible to ruin it for those who haven't seen it yet, but if thats what it takes to convince you I will. I have probably seen this movie 3-5 times. D is such a cool character, since he is so gothic(we ain't talkin about spikes), a gentleman, and... he's the kinda person you wish your son would grow up like, swaping the vampire hunting with a good job. That reminds me, his whole suit of clothes fit him perfectly, actually everyone is made perfectly, I love it.
FINALLY You will be starving for more and curious about unanswered questions, well here's something to know, unless somethings been changed without my knowledge, they are making a second vampire hunter d!
