Better than George Michael's latest release

Funniest thing to come from England since Yes, Primeminister. I absolutely cannot wait for the second series to come out on BBC Canada. Every episode can be watched time and time again. Utterly brilliant.

A good anti-Western

Eastwood has turned in a good Western here, even though the theme is anti-Western, and he plays an anti-hero.

The plot is well covered by other reviewers. A ... is attacked and disfigured by a couple of local cowhands, and the madam and her girls raise a bounty and hire Munny (Eastwood) and his sidekicks to kill them. And, they do.

That's the gist of it. The movie is earthy. The bad guy, for example, is killed while using the outhouse. An undignified end, which is exactly what he deserves.

No heroism here. No shining knight on a white charger. Instead, you get the feeling of realism, which is what director Eastwood was certainly after.

Glued to Screen Night after Night

I've been debating with myself what to grade this. It is not a perfect piece of drama. There were some annoying aspects and characters plus predictible plot moments. However, on balance, the fact that this kept both hubby and me glued to the screen night after night, going through at least 3 episodes at a crack, is very telling on just how big a guilty viewing pleasure this DVD set is. This is the story of federal agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) who experiences crisis after crisis in one very long day. The pivotal point is that both Bauer and the African American presidential candidate are at extreme risk on this day in California because of some Serbian terrorists who are out to revenge past wrongs against them. Their idea of revenge extends to Bauer's wife and daughter as well. Both hubby and I enjoyed the extremely devious wife, Sherri, of David Palmer (presidential candidate) whereas Bauer's wife was such a goody two shoes that she began to grate on our nerves. Jack's key agent at the bureau is Nina. He's also had an affair with her and Jack's wife learns of this while Nina is handling her case. Nina is a key character too, one who never looses her cool under fire. There is also a very attractive Serbian terrorist who is having an affair with an aide to the presidential candidate to get information out of her. She becomes aware of being used and the ensuing scenes between these two, where she knows he's used her, are the very best in the whole set. Kiefer Sutherland, like many top actors, has a wonderful, memorable voice. He is marvelous as agent Bauer. Dennis Hopper is the key Serbian villain. I can't say it was a huge surprise to find him playing this role. He's ok but I'd rather see him go back to directing.

One of the best movies I ever seen

From the lovely people who have conned you for years, comes another reduction of an international film scaled down to easily consumed bites by the people who hate you. Wim Wenders masterpiece "Wings of Desire" has been re-made. Why not? Gus has re-made "Psycho" and I've heard Bergman's greats are under revision as well. Has Hollywood finally become this pathetic? Surprise! History has always been written by the most underhanded and greedy. " Wings of Desire" was the upside to the only slightly less successful "Far Away, So Close". The upside, of course, is always more profitable. With the success of the inhumane series "Touched by an Angel", certain suits saw Wender's international hit as an idiot's goldmine. The stars are redundant. Box-office ecstasy! There is only a skeleton here of the ORIGINAL, as angels and humans alike deal with more "carnal" concerns. Unfortunately, the only telling critique I can give is to compare it to the original(and the sequal), but subtitles are so hard to read. Maybe it is best, after all, to swallow. (By the way, 1 star is the lowest I am allowed to give).

Political Idealism Shattered.

I throughly enjoyed the novel by "Anonymous" when it came out in (I think) 1995. When the film premiered I braced myself for the worst. The film is never as good as the book, as anyone will tell you. But I was wrong. If anything, "Primary Colors" was *better* than the book, a thinly-veiled take-off on Bill Clinton's turbulent campaign for the Presidency in 1992.
Why is this such a fine movie? Two words- John Travolta. As Jack Stanton he captures the role perfectly- Clinton's demeanor, his passion for people, his weaknesses. I scoffed at hearing that Travolta was to play the part, and am I ever glad I was wrong. Travolta is terrific. Whoever won the Oscar for Best Actor that year must have done a great job to out-shine Travolta.
The rest of the cast is dead-on in their roles- Emma Thompson as Stanton's Hillary-esque wife, Adrian Lester as the Stephanapoulos-esque moral center to the film, Kathy Bates as Stanton's idealistic alter ego, and Larry Hagman as Stanton's opponant, Governor Freddy Picker.
I particularly liked Billy Bob Thornton as Richard Jemmons, a stand-in for Clinton's advisor James Carville. A lesser actor would have aped Carville's Cajin accent and played the part as a parody. Thornton though is smart enough to play Jemmons as a smart, cocky but utterly loyal subbordinate whose good 'ol boy demeanor masks a cunning political mind.
Director Mike Nichols has produced some wonderful performances from a really wonderful cast. The film's exploration of political idealism and how quickly it is shattered is well-done and quite timely now given the current Presidential election.
Outstanding film for political junkies and people who enjoy good drama.

If you haven't seen DS9

Deep Space 9 is, I think, the most thoughtful of the spin-offs, with depth and great character development. If you haven't see this series, you will love it.

Seinfeld Hits Stride

Though the first two seasons of "Seinfeld" laid the foundation for one of the greatest television shows ever, they do come off a little rough. Everything really starts to gel and come together as "Seinfeld" moves to the next level. Season three is equally as impressive as the rest of the seasons. If you appreciate quality television and enjoyed the first two seasons of "Seinfeld" you will, without a doubt, fall in love with the first season.

Perfect black comedy

This film was robbed by most of the national critics which once again tells us; don't skip an interesting movie based on a bad review in your local paper. The critics missed the point on this one which is a real shame. It was a flop at the box office and even director Devito on the DVD commentary refers to the aftermath of the film's release as "the mourning period".

What the critics failed to see is that this is one of the finest "black" comedies to come along in years. It is dark, snide, satirical, unrelenting, and hysterically funny. Devito's brand of physical direction is absolutely dead on. The film is filled with unbelievable energy and panache and he gets superb performances from a very talented cast. Williams in particular delivers a scathing, in your face performance. And Harvey Fierstein as a charity fraud crook is a stitch!

The kiddie songs are hilarious; the list characters from dancing midgets to the Irish mafia are straight out of a Tim Burton nightmare; the ice skating sequence accompanied by opera arias is inspired, knee slapping lunacy! The screenplay is deliciously twisted and crude. Yes, the movie assaults you with lots of foul language, but the nastiness is part of the dark hilarity of the proceedings.

What's even more impressive is that director Devito never wavers. This movie has an utterly consistent tone. It is devasting in its relentless, unflinching satire of sweet kiddie shows. I'll say it again. This movie was robbed by the local and national know nothing critics.

If you love comedy especially a satire with no mercy; don't miss this one!

Totally awesome.

Wow! I bought this DVD on the day of release and am proud to say that Bon Jovi have done it again! Totally, totally awesome. So glad I bought it :) Go ahead and get it if you're in doubt! Bon Jovi made a brave move when they decided to totally transform their songs, but I believe that they have been truly successful in the transformation. Either way, all the songs are great and the DVD itself it fantastic. Selling like hot-cakes over here ;) Get out and get it!
