You Will Believe a Man Can Fly!

An amazing film in itself. A great cast and story that puts other films behind it. Only few movies have a lasting impression like The Diary of Anne Frank, Citizen Kane, and Its a Wonderful Life. I believe this was, Is and will be one of the greatest movies of all time.

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark - movie DVD cover picture
An unlikely feminist role-model?

This is and has always been my favorite movie of all time. It's a movie for all seasons, and for all reasons (a good sick in bed movie, a good date movie, well it's just an all-around good movie), that is of course, if you like camp.
I was too young to have watched Elvira's TV shows, but I don't think I have been spared at all since the film just bulges with Evira's trademark sassy wit and a fierce determination to be just who she is: a sexy, independent, 'bad girl' (without the bad intentions) wrapped up in a very glamorous package while leaving nothing behind.
I was hoping for a more timely -and just as funny- sequel, but to my dismay, it came over ten years later and had me walking out of the theater before the end.

According to her website, Elvira is not over, thankfully to us fans as she still makes appearances every now and then especially during Halloween time- if you have cable that is...
She's even been recently mentioned as a historical figure in the women's liberation for our time; in a recent issue of Bust, a woman's mag with a feminist slant, the editors even casts her as a feminist icon.
But the question remains whether we will ever get to see more of the endearing antics of that ball-busting woman that we admired -and even forged a cult following over- in the 80's. I hope so.

pi is a masterpiece

Pi was a beautiful movie. I loved the aspect of it being all in black and white, and how interesting the characters were. The soundtrack was beautifully done- to match the character's actions.. and the math part of the movie was really interesting. I heard it was made for around $20,000.. thats amazing because you really can't tell at all. Rent it or buy it now and you'll be doing yourself a great favor.

Begotten - movie DVD cover picture

Begotten's disturbing imagery shoved itself inside of me and ripped open the place where all of my supernatural fears lay dormant. The texture of the film was like watching a movie encased in a snow globe where each action of a character came together to create a beautiful, swirling mass of iridescent flakes. The timing of the film allows the viewer respite from the most brutal scenes while creating delicious anticipation for more. Elias Merhige's vision brought back every childhood fascination I had with religion. You have to see it!

Ghost in the Shell - movie DVD cover picture
Mind/Body Duality Explored

I'm hooked on anime. The movie is fantastic. Drawn in by the similarity between Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix and Matrix Reloaded, this stylistic exploration of an issue that constatnly defies resolution -- the mind/body duality -- is certainly getting a strong revisit here.
Ghost in the Shell is Kazunori Ito's futuristic vision where the confluence of the body (the shell) and the ghost (the mind) meets cyborg technology and all we are left with is angst. The film is certainly aimed at adults. I am new to the phenomenon of anime so I am still wondering about all the nudity and violence playing to a particular theme. My sense is that the intimate nature of man and machine and the particular threat that cyborg technology poses is considered real and immediate. Reference is made to the high maintenance nature of the cyborg and the technology in this movie. However, despite lines like "Aside from a slight brain augmentation, your body's almost entirely human" and "You're treated like other humans, so stop with the angst!" we are still confronted with the mind/body duality.
Framed in a stylistic space where characters like Maj. Kusanagi run after such unlikely characters as "The Puppet Master" and similarities of movies like Bladerunner and the X-Files I can't help but grin at the irony of so "western" (and I use this word cautiously here) a consideration played out in such an "eastern" space. Despite all that, Ghost in the Shell is a cinematic event and should be treated as such. With the fertile cross polination between the east and the west, who knows, we might see a new entity which is a simulacra of the androginous characters that inhabit this genre. Am I hooked? Absolutely! Can't wait for the sequel. If you have not seen this movie -- watch it! It will change your perspective on animation entirely.

Fun, Sparkling Film

Having read "The Princess Diaries" and "Princess in the Spotlight," I was a little worried about a film version of "The Princess Diaries." Yet, when I saw the film, I was actually very pleased. The actors do a marvelous job, the film moves at a good pace, and the direction is sound. All of the changes made to the script make sense and help the film to flow, rather than ruining it and making it a pain to sit through. I recommend this movie to anyone looking for a funny, fresh movie that does not suffer from the world-weary attitude displayed by so many films today.

A classic. Who can forget Chase's classic one liners? "A flute with no holes, is not a flute...and a donut with no hole is a danish" Who are we to argue with such profound wisdom?!
Definetly a classic comedy for the ages. Looks at the game of golf in a new light. If you need a good laugh, look no further!
