Beats "The Sixth Day" by a mile!

Stephen Baldwin & Kyle MacLachlan star in this mind-transfering, clone-filled B flick which may be a bit too fictious to swallow. Stefan Toffler goes through a series of "bodies" before he is able to rescue back his own from terrorists all on a 48 hour time limit. Traces of a "modern day D.O.A."?

Insomnia...A great Sleeper!

Another excellent example that Americans weaned on Hollywood trash are really missing out on some fine cinema. This psychological thriller by first time director Skjoldbjaerg will leave you in high anticipation for his next release (and it can't come too soon). The storyline of this film is merely a foundation for the more important character study on the psychological decomposition of a man caught in a lie and unable to escape the truth (the midnight sun?).
The cinematography has a minimalist, stark beauty to it, but with a contemporary edge. Some of the interior scenes are reminiscent of an Edward Hopper painting, which subtly reinforce the protagonists cool detachment from his environment. If you like well constructed, intelligent, artistic movies without the hollywood pyrotechnics, check this movie out. You won't be disappointed
Overall, the DVD quality is excellent for sound and picture, except for one scene where digital artifacts flash across the screen (this may be just on my copy).

Stop the wimpering about the DVD's

Every time these movies have been re-released they have increased in quality and content. This is the world created by George Lucas, and though you guys may have a distant childhood memory he has the original concept that you based your pre-teen imagination's on.
Lucas is the cause of entertainment evolution. No one has ever erected a statue for a critic... and as history has proven, SW critics claimed that the movie (that you love) was useless and a waste of $10mil. (a bandwagon that you seem to have a comfortable seat, based on collections of other Amazon reviews)
Without Mr. Lucas's "Force"full push for a better copy and the newest technology available we would still be watching old grainy reruns of All in the Family and listening to Edith cackle instead of "the Amazon critics".

Buy the DVD's, enjoy the content and shut up!

Eastwood's best Western, he went out on top !

I watched this movie in my anylysis of media class and enjoyed it. I"ve never seen a full western movie, but this one made me want to watch more. It had all the aspects of a typical western. The climax was the shooting seen in the saloon where Munney(Eastwood) defeats all the gunmen. Unforgiven overturned the genre of the western in this cowboy movie.

Anime, 'Classical Cinema'-Style

The translator of this series says in his notes on the disc that this series is much the same to anime as Kurosawa Akira was to Japanese filmmaking. I find it hard to disagree as both draw from many of the same themes and styles.
The series, known to the rest of anime fandom as the "Rurouni Kenshin" OAV series, tells the background of the series hero Himura Kenshin who is a major (fictional) source behind the civil war at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the late 1860s to early 1880s. By the time we meet him in the TV Series, he is a wanderer who is dedicated to peace and has a past of incredible violence that he can never seem to completely live down. This series tells the back story for Kenshin. This disc is the second (of two) in his story.
Many themes of classical Japanese literature and film are found in the OAV Series - and especially in this disc - and the pace of it is highly evocative of movies like "Ran" and "Gonza the Spearman". The art is simply incredible - and done in large part with computer-generated animation. In many ways, the animation style is much like the early episodes of "Serial Experiments Lain" with a much brighter feel. The muscial score is lovely and does a surprisingly good job a steering clear of J-Pop like that which is found in the TV Series. While not totally classically Japanese, it fits well with the story - which is not totally classically Japanese either.
There are many reminders that the series is not a complete throwback to classic Japanese cinema. The romance, while maintaining a very classical twist, owes much to modern anime melodrama. The action sequences, while very impressive, are very indicative of what one finds in anime of the last five to ten years - not cinema of half a century ago. Likewise, the almost seemingly airbrushed images of fire, waves and falling blossoms give a modern anchor to this tale.
On the whole, almost nothing to fault in the series. It is simply a masterpiece of animation and can rightly be ranked with critically acclaimed pieces by Miyazaki and Ishii as well as cinematic works of filmmakers like Kurosawa. You do not need to have seen the TV Series to follow the plot and, in some cases, may find it a hindrance. For any fan of not just anime, but of film or Japanese culture, I highly recommend both this disc and its predecessor.

The beauty of life!

I love this movie for the basic message it sends. There are a few things I think are purely for fantasy (you will be saying...yeah, right!), but overall the movie deals with the issues of life and how wonderful it is to be alive and in love. This movie will make you want to be a teenager again. I don't think this is a movie only for teens, I am 33 and loved it. The actors seem a bit older than they are supposed to be.
Leelee Sobieski (Sam) and Chris Klein (Kelley) are just perfect in their roles. I thought their acting was adorably romantic, although I did immediately think of Helen Hunt the first time I saw Leelee Sobieski, the likeness was amazing. My husband agreed!
Kelley is a city boy from Boston who receives a car as a gift from his dad while he is at prep school. His dad can't make his graduation and is always making deals on the phone, selling stock and taking care of business. Kelley isn't supposed to drive the car until after graduation, but takes it out late at night after finding the keys. He and his friends speed off and you just have the feeling that they are going to find themselves in some sort of trouble. When they enter the local teenage hangout, diner....they seem very out of place in this small town. Kelley's cocky attitude doesn't help and Jasper (Josh Hartnett who you just feel sorry for through the whole movie!) doesn't like the way Kelley is flirting with his girlfriend. His attitude later in the movie is so great because he really proves he loves Sam, and that is the beauty of his role.
There is a "two guys fighting for the girl" theme running through the whole movie which women and girls alike will just love. Both Jasper and Kelley have deeper sides, but they are young and get into a few fights over Sam. Sam falls for Kelley because she is looking for someone who is romantic/bad boy type, and he definitely fits the bill.
What Jasper and Kelley don't know is that they are spending time hating each other while the girl they are fighting over may always be out of their reach. After a car accident burns down the diner where Sam works, Jasper and Kelley not only have to live in the same environment, they have to work together and they have to deal with their feelings for Sam.
The first half of this movie was all for the guys, the second half...all for the girls. I cried for the last half of this movie at least! I laughed through the first half. The actors were very convincing and the story captured the essence of what life is about. There is one person for everyone, you just never know how you are going to find them, or what you might have to do to keep them. Sometimes, you can't keep them and you have to say goodbye sooner than you want to. This movie is so sad!

A wonderful movie!!

Our 3 year old has recently discovered Pooh & Friends through their movies. "Piglet's Big Movie" had been her favorite, until now. She's absolutely in love with Lumpy and Roo (and I must admit, so am I!) What a sweet movie, with a sweet story that's easy to follow and understand. Moms of little ones will certainly appreciate Kanga's song Little Mr Roo. (Tears me up everytime I hear it! They grow up so fast!) If you have little ones, this movie is a must.
