Beware of the terrible Tropopkin

I enjoyed watching this movie when it first came on the Disney Channel and I still enjoy watching it today. Alan Thicke gives a great performance as Todd's uptight father, a man who is so grounded in reality he doesn't even know what it means to use his imagination. Robin Riker is fabulous as the seductive and evil Denise Gore, who in reality of course is a monster. It was nice seeing Corey Feldman in this movie, who is so hilarious as Phlegm, the rock musician, head banging freak, and Amy Dolenz is equally good as Wendy, Phlegm's girlfriend and Todd's object of affection. I thought that the makeup and the special effects in this movie were actually quite good, the acting was very believable and there were some very funny moments in it. Also look for other great performances by John Astin as the priest and George Gaynes as Todd's grandfather. A wonderful movie, one that the whole family should watch.

An Officer and a Gentleman - movie DVD cover picture
It's an everlasting, romantic entertainment!

Initially, my first impression of this movie was this movie was going to be boring. Then, after the first 20 minutes, my mind went into another direction. I found this movie to be interesting, and I knew there had to be some meaning to the movie. And indeed there was!
Zack Mayo, (Richard Gere) is a college graduate who pursues a chance to become a naval officer by entering the Officer Candidate Training School. In 14 solid weeks, Zack progresses and learns the ability of leadership, friendship, and discipline, through his tough drill instructor, (Louis Gossett Jr, in his Oscar-winning performance), and his friends.
Mood and tone are expressed intelligently through the emotions of adventure, torture, romance, and entertainment. My favorite aspect of this movie is Jack Nitzsche's unforgettable scoring. The mood and tone ties in together as the music plays, and makes the audiences feel spontaneous of what they are watching (especially with the love themes).
This movie, starring Richard Gere, Debra Winger, David Keith, Lisa Blount, Louis Gossett Jr., Robert Loggia, and Lisa Eilbacher, was the winner recipient of 2 Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor: LOUIS GOSSETT JR., and Best Original Song: "UP WHERE WE BELONG." Also nominated for 4 additional Academy Awards, including Best Actress: DEBRA WINGER, Best Original Screenplay: DOUGLAS DAY STEWART, Best Original Score: JACK NITZSCHE, Best Film editing, and nominated for a total of 8 Golden Globes, this movie unmarks the boundary between love and adventure.
Richard Gere, even though nominated for a Golden Globe, should of been nominated for an Oscar. His outstanding performance brought the true nature of what it's like to be his character. This was the performance of his entire career!
With a clear-cut picture, and sharp sound, this movie will never grow old in your home! I would positively recommend this movie to another.

American Beauty - movie DVD cover picture

I've enjoyed many, many films over the years, but none as much as American Beauty. Beautifully filmed, wonderfully acted, with a story that is as deep as it is relevant -- this film is sheer perfection. American Beauty deserves all of its accolades -- and perhaps a few more.

Singing Foes!

"Zulu" (1964) is a very good war movie that grows up to an epic chronicle.
The story is based on real facts occurred in South Africa in January 1879 and follows them with some alterations (as usual).

After a few introductory scenes, the film goes directly into an action packed narration.
The situation is as follows at Rorke's Drift stands a Christian mission. There are two small British detachments in place, totalizing around a hundred men, one for garrisoning the mission and the other one for building a bridge across the river.
Suddenly they receive notice that the main British force in the territory has been massacred early that day. Moreover Zulu's army four thousands warriors strong are marching against them.
Two very different young Lieutenants and their experienced Sergeants start urgent preparations to resist. A collection of picturesque Welsh soldiers are the backbone of the stronghold defenders.
The Pastor of the Mission incites troops to flee. He is successful with the auxiliary forces. A cavalry platoon passes by and refuse to reinforce them.
So the detachment is alone, isolated and without hope of reinforcement.
Zulu army starts attacking and reveal themselves as an organized, disciplined and courageous force.
The battle rages with increasing sanguinary violence and a prodigy of braveness is displayed by both parts.

There are some anecdotic but relevant facts around the movie to be noted.
It was filmed relatively near where the original battle take place, the South African scenery is beautifully photographed.
Some of the first scenes show a Zulu's mass marriage ceremony, comprehending dancing and singing by hundreds of members of that ethnic group. The ancestral choreography is just a joy to see!
The opposing choirs deliver one of the finest pre-battle scenes I ever watched!
The epoch reconstruction, military and diction are very accurate.

Finally play acting is great. Stanley Baker as Engineer Lt. Chard gives deepness to his character and is able to show the internal conflicts that traverse Chard's soul.
Michael Caine in his first important role makes a perfect composition of the spoiled and aristocratic of military ascent Lt. Bromhead. It is said he took his pains to perfect his accent in a military garrison.
Jack Hawkins IMHO is not at his best in this film. Nigel Green as veteran Colour Sgt. Bourne is impeccable.

This is one of the best war movies depicting colonial wars I ever seen. I strongly recommend it.

Hannibal - movie DVD cover picture

One of the most underrated movies around. Hannibal, under the artistic eye of Ridley Scott, far exceeds the previous films and the painfully pretentious novel of the same name. People claim that this movie is `preposterous and ridiculous'. I say the very unbelievable concepts are what give this movie such a great heart! This movie is fantastic in every way, and Maestro Ridley creates a visually stunning stage on which the actors forge unforgettable, larger-than-life characters. This is Good vs. Evil at its finest. This is true art.
Anthony Hopkins is delicious. Julianne Moore is determined. Ray Liota is pitch-perfect. Gary Oldman is simply the best actor on the planet. From Florence Italy to the suburbs of Virginia, this masterpiece becomes much more of an Adventure movie (like an artfully directed James Bond or Indiana Jones movie) than a Horror film. Anybody expecting a shallow, scary thriller should turn away. This is a movie of a deeper breed...

Satire as a high art form

It is sometimes hard to view something this perverse as a higher art form, but the ability with which South Park skewers the bizarre accepted attitudes of the day makes for a fantastic satire. This isn't just (at all?) for kids, folks!

There are only 3 episodes of 22 minutes a pop here, but they are all winners. Passion of the Jew is first, where folks make fun of both sides of the Passion controversy. Folks who take the movie too seriously are attacked, as are those who object to it without seeing it.

Christian Rock Hard takes on the Christian music industry, as well as the anti-piracy lobby in Music. Musicians of all forms are parodied as no-talents just in it for the money.

Red Hot Catholic Love takes on a current societal taboo - the priest child rape stories. It is very hard to take folks to task for this, but if it's under the guise of a kids cartoon? Well, to misquote Mark Twain, "They only let me say it because they think I'm joking!"

Yes, the language is vile. And the show is in many senses it is the lowest common denominator of entertainment. But somehow, strangely enough, true satire emerges.

I loved it!!!!!!!!

This was great. I don't see as many holiday episodes of the Powerpuff Girls as I do with other cartoons (IE Rugrats, SpongeBob SquarePants, ETC). In fact, this is the only holiday episode of PPG that I can recall. The plot was excellent. Buy this now if you're a PPG fan!!!!
