A tense and comical classic!

Being a hardcore fan of movies from Japan and China, Hell in the pacific is one of the few American arthouse movies I now owned and it is an absolutely fantastic piece of work.
Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune is absolutely terrific in this movie. Their chemistry is as perfect as the story is tense and an absolutely hilarious esp during the scenes when they try to out do each other in their "turf fight". I crack up everytime each one of them mess up their own dirty little wicked plan in the most humourous fashion.
The cinematography is stunning and I really appreciate the alternate ending. I find the original ending really sucks big time.
Still a solid 5 star for this movie. 2 stars for both actors, 1 star for the movie, 1 star for the cinematography and 1 star for the alternate ending. There you go, a 5 star pure cinematic genius. I am very very happy with this DVD.

Anti Talent love the White Stripes, and you should too!

Ok, I know this is a lil unfair to review something before it comes out, but I see people do it on here all the time so... I signed up to this review thing just to tell you to buy this! I, along with the rest of my band Anti Talent, know it will be good! Every White Stripes CD is amazing, and live in concert they are mouth wateringly delicious! Buy this DVD, and then go see them live; you won't regret it! We're also hoping to go see a theater showing of this movie, so that should be killer! Ok, well there's my two cents... oh and if you're bored and wanna check out some more Detroit area punk rock 'n' roll, check out our band Anti Talent at There's a lame plug, but as my grandpa always says, "You gotta do somethin'." But more importantly, long live the White Stripes!

Best movie you, never heard of

I really liked this film. It's off the wall & quirky, with some fine amusing moments & plenty to think about. It works as pure entertainment & it works on another level---either perception or both it's a worthy rental or purchase. You could look at it symbolically or just watch for fun. A definate (not preachy) reminder that the way you look at things can change what things are, on the road of your life. See if you can spot all the cameos; I found myself wondering if I might have missed some.---After a second viewing (once I bought it) I like this movie even more. Don't let the slight cheeseness up front fool you. Once it warms up this is a great movie. A very entertaining story & a good reminder; the way we look at things effects what we see.

Superb Psychological Thriller

Green Manors mental hospital is about to change management. The previous director Dr. Murchison has been worn-out from his job and is being replaced by Dr. Edwards (Gregory Peck), a famous psychiatrist who is well published. At the arrival to Green Manor Dr. Edwards meets the attractive Dr. Petersen (Ingrid Bergman), who is a determined scientist that does not let anything in between her and her work. However, the arrival of Dr. Edwards changes things for her and she ends up falling in love with him. It appears that Dr. Edwards is not who is supposed to be. He appears to be a pretender who suffers from amnesia and paranoia. As he escapes from Green Manor the police are contacted and he becomes a suspect in the murder of the real Dr. Edwards. An affectionate and loving Dr. Petersen is determined, based on her intuition, that he is innocent, which she is determined to prove while attempting treat the stranger's condition. Spellbound is a highly suspenseful thriller that provides many opportunities for suspicion and uncertainty. This leaves the audience with a brilliant cinematic experience, which will keep them in apprehension until the end.

GoodFellas - movie DVD cover picture
The Best Film I Have Ever Seen

Martin Scorsese created his definitive masterpiece with this film. GoodFellas has everything and anything I could for in a motion picture, and it is done so well with such enthusiasm, excellence and thought that it boggles the mind. While it might be on a subject that might not be appealing to everyone, it is certainty worth viewing (I would even put it over the Godfather).
The film is about a kid in Brooklyn named Henry Hill, who grows up in the Mafia world not on the inside, but as an outsider looking in, who gets so intrigued by the way they act, the way they get away with anything, everything. That leads Hill in becoming a bus boy, and then working his way up in the world. How Scorsese deals with this material (brought from Nicholas Pillegi's novel which he co-scripted with the director) is different from other directors. He handles it that the man knows the risks, but he doesn't care. Just as long he can be different, not like other average people.
But this couldn't sustain the film alone. It is elevated from exceptional acting by the whole cast: Ray Liotta in a fine breakthrough as the main character as a adult in his rise, and his eventual fall; Robert De Niro in a somewhat overrated yet good role as Jimmy Conway, one of 2 mentors of Hill with a bad attitude yet with charm; Joe Pesci, absolutely breathtaking with one of the most memorable scenes ever at the table telling his joke and being totally insane while still having the courtesy to have fun doing it (Pesci won the only Oscar for the film in America); Lorraine Bracco in also a great breakthrough as Henry's understanding yet angry wife (probably this is what got her noticed to co-star on the HBO show The Sopranos); and Paul Sorvino as the head mafia chieftain Paulie.
Acting helps this film immensely, and of course it is just one part of the film's greatness. The photography is also awesome, with shots going into the copa cabana being fantastically mesmerizing and simple one's like the shot at the dinner table being simple; it is just another part of it.
Martin Scorsese has been able to top them all now. With a story that is unconventional (much like life, for which it's based on), great acting, directing, writing, photography and jokes, this is a movie that was not seen like this before 1990, it astounded audiences (and still does), and nothing like it will ever some around again.

The start of something Big...

The Sex and the City-The Complete First Season is a great item for those who don't have cable TV (unlike me). I get HBO just to watch these shows. Most of the year I don't have HBO, but when June comes, I rush to get it. I have all of the first, second, and third season on tape, but this is a great gift idea for friends. I will probably buy this for one of my family and friends for birthdays or holidays (just to get them as addicted as I am). The great thing about this show is that every woman can see a little bit of herself in every one of the characters. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is the character I most relate to because of her fashion sense and her personality (very similar to mine). Samantha (Kim Catrall) is the woman that most women vilify, but wish they were like. She is so bold, daring and downright outrageous. There is a little Samantha in everyone. Miranda is the workaholic of the bunch who seeks perfection in everyone and everything. She is bold like Samantha, but in a different way. Charlotte is the one who you find endearing. Her search for her Prince Charming with a Madison Avenue job and Park Avenue apartment is something to watch. She goes through so many frogs, it is hilarious to watch.
This is the season that all of the newer fans must see. The first season gives insight into each of the four main characters (it relies more on the book (written by Candace Bushnell-a great read) in its descriptions of the characters ). It includes the beginning of the relationship of Carrie & Mr. Big and the first break-up (to be followed in the next few seasons by many more). It also includes the many misadventures of Miranda, which makes this season all the funnier. Samantha is at her vampiest. Charlotte is not as prudish and judgemental in this season (something to see). It may not be the best season of the show (which is season 3), but remember there would not be a show without this season.
This show has all of the elements that keep you tuning in. This is a must buy for fans of the later seasons. Buy it!!!

Videodrome - movie DVD cover picture
Beware reality T.V!

'Videodrome' was a movie way ahead of its time. It flopped on its release in 1982, but the the themes it deals with are more pertinent now than they've ever been.
James Woods plays David Cronenberg's alter-ego Max Renn, a character who eventually becomes more and more in thrall to the sinister messages that come from his T.V. and induce LSD-like hallucinations. A Marshall McLuhan type character by the name of Brian O'Blivion spouts off his media theory from a homeless shelter called 'The Cathode-Ray Mission' (emission). His belief is that television is reality and real communication is impossible which is why he favours appearing on television using the monologue as that is the only way people will listen to him. His office in the mission however is filled with spiritual statues and symbols that somehow seem to reflect a longing to escape from the cathode ray's grip.
As always in Cronenberg's pictures, the body and the flesh start to rebel against the brain. Cronenberg has always been fascinated by the body's ability to slip away from the conscious control of the mind and revolt like colonies taking over their mother country. In 'Videodrome' Max's mind falls into greater and greater subservience to his physical drives until his flesh becomes one with the T.V. technology, creating 'the new flesh'.
Some minor asides in the film proved to be quite prophetic for the future to come. Max states how the production costs for most of his shows are non-existant, a foretaste of the reality shows that now prevade our screens. There's even a hint of virtual reality when Max tries on his hallucinagenic helmet.

Best Modern Silverscreen Musical Yet!!

I saw this movie the first night it hit the theatres and absolutely loved it. My date and I were so im love with this movie that we immediately went out and bought the soundtrack and saw it another 6 times. I thought that all of the effect were stupendous, and that all of the arrangements of old songs were awesome!! The movie never lets down. After a slow intro it picks up speed and holds the intensity the during the whole show! I especially loved the duets with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. They were so awesome, and those two were meant to perform together. I definately recommend this movie for anyone that loves musicals and love stories. Wonderful intensity, and great effects will take your breath away, along with touch your heart! If you don't like sad endings then I would recommend not watching the end, but otherwise it's a great moive!

This is a movie that seems to get better each time I see it and I'm sure I've seen it over 20 times. I poke fun at people who watch the same movie more than once and cannot get enough of Phil, Rita, and Phil, the big rat. Bill Murray says this film is special. Folks, it is pure magic.
