A personal experience/ A must see movie

I recently had a chance to see the Doctor again, albeit with different eyes. The basic story line regards a cardiovascular surgeon, technically brillant but bereft of human touch. Indeed, initially, he seems somewhat proud of his aloof stance, almost trying to make it into an advantage. He relates to his patients and residents as I have seen many physicians do. Truthfully, the more awful the diagnosis, the more at arms length many physicians hold the situation. Physicians routinely mention that a patient might die, but it's rarely really true and gets mentioned as a matter of fact. When death is really a possibility, it is much harder to say that you might die. Dr McKee comes face to face with this when he becomes the patient, diagnosed with a malignant laryngeal tumor he faces the rigors of radiation treatment and when this fails surgery. He finds that the standoffish posture he had always adopted no longer worked, and the impersonal surgeon he has no longer can do all the things he needs done, both surgically and emotionally.
I had to come face to face with some of these issues when I had to have heart surgery. Truthfully, the hospitals involved did treat me with some preference, but the fears and risks were the same. I learned first hand about the reticence of surgeons to talk about a real risk of death. My surgeon left a blank consent for me to sign. I dutifully filled out the consent including risks and benefits, like a good resident. I missed the chance to look him in the eye and tell him that I trusted him with my life, all the while realizing that it would have made him uncomfortable.... it always makes me uncomfortable. See, while we all realize that what we do carries significant risks, surgeons in the US are very well trained and do very good work. We all tend to assume that things will go very well; and they so often do that we tend to forget that they might not. We become uncomfortable when we realize that just those things are what patients are focused on, just those chances that things might not go well.
Everybody needs the human touch. Even when they seem not to want it.

See the movie. There are times that it's uncomfortable, but that's how it is sometimes, isn't it?

Anything with Chapelle is worth buying

This DVD is hilarious and just about every comedian that takes the stage will have you laughing. It's just worth having because of Dave Chapelle. There are comedians I have never heard of but they still keep you laughing. I definitely recommend this DVD. It is one of the better Comedy Def Jam DVDs.

For Paul Gordon re: Frame glitch

The disc is dual-layered. Often, when switching layers (thereby switching laser frequency), there is a frame glitch.
Like memory on a portable CD player, high end DVD players often have memory to store images to compensate so you don't see the glitch.
I believe the above is the source of your problem, the solution is to get a DVD player with memory.

You bet your sweet bippy--It's Rowan & Martin's Laugh In

Before SNL, SCTV or Fridays there was "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In". A show featuring split-second & side splitting humor. It often features special guest stars---like Richard Nixon (Sock it to me?) Jack Benny, & Sammy Davis Jr. (Here comes da judge)Starring Arte Johnson, Ruth Buzzi, Lily Tomlin and many more. Verrry interesting!

The Best of the Brosnan Bonds

Though suffering from the same weak-villain malaise as most modern Bond films, "Tomorrow Never Dies" nonetheless scores big in the action and style departments, making it the best of the Brosnan Bonds. The latest 007 is in top form here, playing a contemporary Bond with the correct mixture of threat and thought, even if Brosnan is still no Sean Connery. This time, Bond squares off against a William-Randolf-Hearst-esque villain bent on increasing the circulation of his tabloid newpaper, "Tomorrow," by starting World War III. Bond is assisted by the most exciting Bond girl of recent years--no, not the bubble-headed Teri Hatcher, but the beautiful and capable Michelle Yeoh as a Chinese agent who is every bit as smooth as her British counterpart. Why on earth she hasn't been in another Bond film or her own based on the character is beyond me, as she puts to shame any other female action hero of late, whether that be "The Matrix's" Carrie-Anne Moss or "Die Another Day's" Halle Berry. With a terrific teaser sequence, excellent score by David Arnold (who manages to evoke John Barry without simply imitating him), stylish look and production values, and fast-paced, if relatively thin, storyline, "Tomorrow Never Dies" suffers only from relatively minor problems, such as Jonathan Pryce's ho-hum villain, who is more a spoiled child than an egomaniacal genius, and some secondary characters--such as the campy "Dr. Kaufman" and anarchist Gupta, played by poor, wasted Ricky Jay--that fall flat. Kudos to Director Roger Spottiswoode for putting excitement back into the Bond series.

Rear Window (Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Number ONE on my all-time list

This movie is too good for words. I saw Rear Window for the first time as a kid, and it captivated me. It sparked my interest in Hitchcock, classic cinema, black-and-white movies, and something I thought I would always despise, silent films.
While this film is not fast-paced or shocking, it is fun to watch. It is warm and rich with color, humor, and romance. It is truly one of the only movies to really focus on the element of mystery and get the audience involved in the suspense. It is impossible for me to critique it: like most Hitchcock pictures, there is so much going on behind the scenes. Even the in-depth studies on the DVD barely touch the surface on all the wonderful elements which comprise this entertaining film.
A cinematic marvel, Rear Window is primarily a game with a camera. Hitchcock pans from one window to the next and leads us wherever he wants us to go. Although a technical achievement, to me, this movie is simply fun to watch. Critics and audiences will continue to discuss and debate all aspects of this film. Steven Spielberg recently remarked that this movie contains the most suspenseful scene in movie history, and one which will never be outdone. Who am I to disagree? Many directors have tried to copy Hitchcock and without success, but luckily they have all learned from him.

Not shot in widescreen

If you want to expand DVD collection, this is a must-have. I mean, who wouldn't want to have this timeless Amercian classic. This DVD had everything from production notes to home movies. Though it lacked 2 major things. An audio commentary and a widescreen presantation. But anyway...The people at Warner Brothers digital remastered this movie so well, you can actually see the cheap piece of string that makes the lion's tail wag!! [Oops. Was that out loud?]. My point is that this is a great addition. BUY IT!!!
