An Outstanding Movie. An Average DVD.

This is an all time favorite of mine. It's just when I use to see it on regular Television or on a Movie Channel, I heard a dubbing sound where Richard Dreyfuss is examining the first victim and when they cut to the part when he lifts her hand (on the DVD) he said "Now this is what happens..." (?) and then they cut to another piece of dialogue that doesn't flow with that scene. On Television or on a Movie Channel they would dub in "And this is what happens when a shark attacks." I think that's what it said. But I know a dub when I hear one.

Do you read Sutter Kane?

What if you were fiction? Inspired by the writings of the Edgar Allen Poe of the Twentieth Century, H. P. Lovecraft, "In the Mouth of Madness" is a film so loaded with strange occurances, bizarre sights, and intruiging ideas that it's inevitable that most of them will be wasted/barely acknowledged/quickly forgotten as the plot demands to be followed and the story progresses from beginning to end. There's just so much going on in the brief hour and a half we're given to watch ... I would love to explore the locations of the town of Hobs End in more detail, observe its people, their pets, the shops, watch old movies of the townspeople constructing the church (why would a colonial American town even have a Byzantine Orthodox Church in the first place?) and most of all check out the creatures lurking in the shadows/behind everyone's backs (literally, sometimes)! But alas, we are not given a chance to do much of that... we're allowed by Mr. Carpenter only a taste if the feast and are then forced by him to turn our concerns to other matters (there is a story to be followed, after all).
Sam Neil is an insurance agent that specializes in high-profile clients, who is sent to investigate the disappearance of horror writer Sutter Kane. He finds himself in the fictional town of Hobbs End, a place which up until that point only existed in Mr. Kane's novels, which seems to serve as the boundary between what is real and what is imaginary ... a boundary that is steadily growing weaker, as Kane's readership increases.
In the Mouth of Madness asks some interesting questions, presents some fascinating ideas, and treats us with some fabulous visuals. It's got every horrible thing you can imagine, from creepy little girls to a crazy mob of gun-toting small-towners to a homicidal grandma to pictures that change (uncomfortably) behind your back to sickening contortions to mental institutions to much much much much more. If you can imagine it, it's here. It's not pretty, but it's fascinating nonetheless. In the Mouth of Madness is one of my all-time favorite films, one I never get tired of watching or thinking about. Check it out, and pick up a volume of Lovecraft's short stories while you're at it (especially one featuring the first Lovecraft story I ever read, "The Dunwich Horror"). After mentally injesting both, you'll be sleeping with the lights on for a week, but it will have been worth it.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - movie DVD cover picture

The last thing I expected with this film (after hearing comments from critics and audiences) was hilarious comedy and a highly entertaining look at the 70's Vegas drug scene, but thats what I got. Depp and Del Toro are Fantastic as the Drugged up wacko's searching for the American Dream. Highlights are the Car scene (with a cameo by Tobey Maguire) where Depp has an incedent with some bats, and the Bathroom scene where Del Toro wants Depp to Kill him. (this scene is a highlight because of the brilliant WHITE RABBIT)

DVD extras not all there?

First off, this is such a great movie, and I would have bought the DVD even with ZERO extras, but having read in's description that there's supposed to be MTV premier footage, and footage of Pee-wee on stage in Chicago, I was rather dissappointed to notice the complete and total absence of these two items from the disc. Are they on there, but just hidden or something? Like Easter Eggs? If anyone knows, please let me know.
The extras that ARE included are great, and should update their description of the DVD details to mention that there are several cut scenes in the bonus material, and a SECOND audio commentary by Danny Elfman, discussing his musical score.

Scream,Jump and Laugh

Craven and Williamson have proven to be a potent team. Wes Craven has always been known as the Horror Genre's hit maker by far. Throw in Kevin Williamson with his screenplay and we have a horror flik with suspense all throughout, but most of all giving kudos to/jabs at older horror fliks. Get a great cast of great young actors/actresses.No one else can or will get away with that, other than Wes Craven. Williamson has shown us he is a genius and this film seems to have started his journey to success. Watching Scream more than once will have you catching some things that you didn't catch the first, second or third times you watched it. Example is the school principal scene, played by Henry Winkler, when someone keeps on knocking at his office door. He opens up the door at one point and mutters something. We see a guy mopping the floor and Winkler says "not you fred". Now look at this guy mopping the floor, he has the same coloured shirt and the same dirty black hat as none other than Freddy Krueger. That part was played by Wes Craven himself. Hey remember Krueger was a janitor in a school. Anyhow, buy this movie and you will not get bored with it at all. Very enjoyable.

A Fresh and Refreshing Film about Love and Relationships

SHAKE IT ALL ABOUT is a fine little movie from Denmark that slices right into the middle of a cross section of life and examines marriage, infidelity, the peaks and troughs of love, and the power of relationships - all in the refreshingly total spectrum of straight and gay life. Two men have been living together for a significant period of time. One finally asks the other to marry and then proceeds to 'cheat' on his lover by having an affair with his lover's sister-in-law! The couple's gay friends side with the jilted man: the wandering architect's friends and his parents encourage the change. When the new couple becomes pregnant, and the jilted lover is injured in an automobile accident (losing an eye, etc), the situation becomes acute and the manner in which the original male pair copes is the bulk of the film. The acting is excellent, the pacing is fast, the humor and tragedy are well balanced, and if the ending is a bit Hollywoodized, it works just fine. A definite step in the right direction for gender bending films and a very fine one at that.

The Dick Van Dyke Show - Season Two (5 Disc Box Set) - movie DVD cover picture
A black & white TV classic...!

In the Fall of 1961, CBS first aired The Dick Van Dyke Show, one of funniest sitcoms in television history. Similar to I Love Lucy, but featuring more docile and less eccentric characters, the show became a mainstay in the top 10 Nielsen ratings for its first four seasons. When the show's ratings slipped in the fifth season, the network cancelled the show. But in the four decades since, The Dick Van Dyke Show has continued to entertain its fans and their children (and their children's children) via syndicated re-runs...

The Dick Van Dyke Show is centered around the life of Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke), a family man living in suburban New York. As the head writer for the fictional "Alan Brady Show," he works with co-writers Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally Rogers (Rose Marie). Rob's work life is always interesting given Buddy's constant wisecracks, Sally's never-ending search for a husband, and the trio's unified harassment of Alan Brady's brother-in-law, Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon). At home, Rob's loving yet overly-nervous wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) stays at home with the couple's son Ritchie (Larry Mathews). Surrounded by all these unique characters, Rob is always embroiled in someone's scheme, fantasy, or shenanigan...

The Dick Van Dyke Show (Season 2) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere "Never Name a Duck" in which Rob brings home two baby ducks from work, but tries to conceal them from Laura and Ritchie so that they don't fall in love with them. But inevitably, they find the ducks with Ritchie naming them Stanley and Oliver. When one of the ducks dies, Rob must explain the situation to Ritchie... Other notable episodes from Season 2 include "Hustling the Hustler" in which Rob discovers that Laura is a closet pool shark, and "A Bird in the Head Hurts" in which a nest-building woodpecker tries to use Ritchie's hair for a foundation...

Really funny movie! Loved it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! I wasn't expecting to be really entertained by it because I heard it did not do all that well at the box office but I went and bought it anyway to see what it's all about and boy was I surprised! It's a really funny and entertaining movie! I'm glad I bought it! Al Pacino was great and the perfect choice for the role of Victor Taransky. I highly recommend this great movie!
