Along for a wonderful experience

This DVD of the cable film from STARZ, Forever Lulu, received terrible reviews but I think it is an extraordinary story of two people, Lulu (Melanie Griffith) and Ben (Patrick Swayze) who shared a summer romance and tragically experience the descent of Lulu (Melanie Griffith) into mental illness. Sixteen years later, escaping from a halfway mental health home, Lulu sneaks away to see Ben and to his surprise tells him about a son he does not know he has. They drive to Wisconsin to see the boy while Ben's wife, Helen (Penelope Ann Miller), threatened by this intrusion into their marriage and unresolved feelings over the death of their young son, follows them to Wisconsin and after an emotional meeting of the three, each struggles to resolve their conflicting feelings and unsettling switches of roles. The three all travel to see the son who initially rejects his new found parents but comes to understand why their relationship happened and why they could not be a family. Finally, Ben and Lulu realize they will always be in love with each other but can only remain a memory. Wonderful performances and a real examination of the discrimination of those with mental illness but the power of Griffith to overcome the stigma, "(to son after he apologizes for calling his mother crazy) I am crazy, it makes it easier that way." This film, while not based on a strong script, works on many levels making you feel the pathos of the relationship between these characters stumbling to deal with their feelings and the circumstances of their lives. The score is worth the price of the DVD, ("Say Goodbye", written by Serge Colbert, Mark Portman & Alan Rich and performed by Lauren Kinkade). Get out a box of Kleenix if you like to drain your sinuses.

Great Movie Ahoy!

Generally, I hate when studios issue 3 or 4 editions of any given film. There are exceptions of course, when the extra material is voluminous or when the film transfer is improved. I feel the time has come for an all-new Snakeoid Edition of this one. For one thing, the current dvd is NOT anamorphic - that should definitely be taken care of, with a fresh widescreen remaster and Dolby Digital EX 5.1. A commentary track would also turn this into must-buy status. Come on, Universal - this is a NO BRAINER!!!

One of the funniest and greatest films.

This is a must see. It has a great storyline and is really funny. It's a real classic movie. They don't make them like this anymore. I highly recommend it to anyone. It's got great humor. Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn are marvelous in it.

For Real

A true war story and a good movie about a bunch of guys tuffing out bad policy in the battlefield. Luckily the leader of this "exercise" was a skilled in tactics. Great book by the way. There are a couple of traditional Mel Gibson moments... you know, the attempts at wrenching the hearts of the viewers by getting a bit sappy, but the 'Nam scenes are skillfully done and show what great leadership Hal Moore really exercised. He (Hal Moore) cared and he shed blood with his brothers in arms. And many men will hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us during those bloody days.

Best Blade yet!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I thought the action was much better than Blade II, and less CGI is better. The ending was a bit cheesy, but the rest of the movie was worth the money. Ryan Reynolds was good comic relief in the movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a good action flick.

a set of 2 complete serials featuring John Wayne

This budget-priced 2 DVD set features the complete Mascot serial "The Shadow of The Eagle" starring John Wayne portraying a pilot for a carnival who must help his boss when he's accused of being "The Eagle," a criminal who has been skywriting threatening messages to an evil corporation. There are elements of comedy at the carnival and a lot of action throughout and the complete "Hurricane Express" serial, also made by Mascot, which features John portraying the son of a murdered engineer on the Hurricane Express, the world's fastest train. His mission is to finish the train's run and capture the murderer who is known as "The Wrecker." This set is essential for any early John Wayne fan and any serial movie fan although it isn't restored on this set, with the finishing touch being the Roan Group's DVD of the complete "Three Musketeers" serial. For the low price listed above, you can get 2 complete serials and that alone is what makes this set released by Diamond Entertainment worthwhile.

Wonderful continuation

Let me just say, my "to read" list is very long and Forester's Hornblower series is on there somewhere, quietly inching its way up. So, this review will be based solely on the merits of the movies.
Having seen the whole series, I may be inclined to say that *Retribution* is my favorite. And this is not because the plot is the best--in fact, the first set of movies were perhaps better in this regard. But there was a strength in this set, especially the latter, that drew me in.
That strength came in the form of the characters themselves. To say that this was because of fine acting would be redundant as so many of the other reviewers have pointed this out. Yet what I've seen mentioned so little is the presence of strong emotion. One would think that that fine naval code, the strict sense of rank, would leave scarce room for feeling. So why is it that when Pellew lets slip how much he cares for Hornblower I found myself in that vague state of misty smiles? The bond between the men, all of the men, is at its most touching here. And I found myself reacting more to that than anything else in the series(even though the action was stirring and the sense of suspense sweet.)
I was thoroughly pleased with the series as a whole and *The Adventure Continues* offered even more entertainment. Ioan Gruffudd is wonderful as Hornblower, though Gregory Peck he is not, and I truly hope to see more of him both as Hornblower and not.

Subtle and amazing

This is the best film I've seen since Cruel Intentions. Watch out for the sub plot, it took me a while to work it out. Extremely clever plot, I think Spacey was chosen by the casting director for a very good reason. Curious? Go buy the film.

Five Stars

John Ford's "The Quiet Man" is one of John Wayne's best roles and best performances. The Irish culture, countryside, and music truly made this film a masterpiece of the 20th century. Maureen O'Hara played the hotheaded Irish native "Mary Kate" - a role for which she is well suited when one considers her other performances in such great films as "McClintock!"
Each and every main character is central to this film, and if a single were to be missing, the whole movie would have lost its quality, in my opinion. The tough-minded, levelheaded thinking of Sean Thornton (John Wayne) combined with the rather emotional display of "foolish" honor on the part of his bride, Mary Kate, contrast nicely and do a wonderful job of illustrating some pretty clear differences in the across-the-pond cultures.
This is a delightful film and I highly recommend it.
