Good Will Hunting - movie DVD cover picture
A can't believe I missed this one!

When Good Will Hunting came out in theaters, I overlooked it. Didn't sound like my bag. Then I saw "Chasing Amy" Which piqued my interest in Ben Affleck. So I decided to check out Good will Hunting, and it's the best movie I've seen since Chasing Amy. I'm not trying to ruin my "JiggamanSpence-ism" or anything, but this was the first time since I was a kid that I began to cry during a movie. I was amazed at the writing, the directing, and the realism of the characters. Matt Damon steals the show here, this is his movie. Robin Williams and Ben Affleck are great supporting roles, and Minnie Driver is amazing as Damon's squeeze. Anybody who likes movies should see this. Just take my word for it, you'll love it.

From the inside

Tastefull and real. A view of the tragedy from the inside, from firemen we learn to know trought out the documentary. Poignant comments and poignant silences. And it's not so much about the attack as it is about the heros...

Ditto!

It almost seems pointless to write about this movie, but I do adore it. PillowTalk was my first introduction to Doris Day (besides my mother milling around, with a far off look in her eye singing Que sara sara--excuse my spelling!). I fell in love with her. This movie shows why we Doris lovers are ga-ga over her. She is the perfect mix of designer style, innocence, wit and beauty and all this with top drawer comedic timing! She's fab!
Again, as with some of her other movies, most notably Please Don't Eat the Daisies, and That Touch of Mink, New York plays a pivotal role. This movie is about New York in the days of party line telephones, classy nightclubs, where patrons sit around a piano and nibble on quaint tidbits, and people actually owned and drove cars! An interesting scene is where Rock tries to "act gay" by discussing recipes! Ironic, and the not so funny point isn't missed. He is nothing but a man's man in this movie, so amazingly handsome, your mouth just hangs open! And wait until you see what a scorned Doris does to his apartment when she "decorates" it as revenge for his deceit! A very enjoyable film. A great way to spend an afternoon or a chilly night, and you won't even need a date!

Absolutely WONDERFUL!

This movie was my favorite movie of all times. They have such wonderful dace moves on this movie, i know it must have taken them soooo long to accomplish those complicated dance moves. I was absolutely stunned at their dance moves. I LUV penny's shoes when she dances (the silver ones) and i luv all the songs on there, there isn't one i don't like, or know all the words to, since i have seen the movie a million times (and the first time a saw it was about 12 days ago!) I have asked around and found out it's a lot of people's favorite movie. This absolutely tops the list of ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

Baby Einstein Series

I have 6 month old twins, boy and girl, and they absolutely LOVE the baby einstein series. Amongst their favorites are Baby Bach, Baby MOzart, and Baby Dolittle. My daughter screams with delight at certain parts of the movies. I highly recommend these tapes. Sometimes by putting them on, it can free up an hour for me to get things done! My kids can be screaming, and when I put the tapes on, they suddenly are enchanted by the music and images, and are totally entertained!

Lost In Translation (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Murray shines in a superbly unusual movie

For the past few years, I have been concerned that Bill Murray, who has long been one of my favorite performers, had been relegated by Hollywood exclusively to supporting parts. After a string of wonderful box office films in the eighties and very early nineties, Murray had settled into playing largely supporting parts in a variety of smaller films, with Wes Anderson's RUSHMORE a major exception. This film, however, is a return to leading man status for Murray, and he makes the most of a great part.
Murray plays American movie star Bob Harris, in Tokyo to make print and television ads for a Japanese brand of whiskey for $2 million. We are simultaneously introduced to Charlotte, the young, intellectual, pretty, and profoundly disoriented wife of John, a freelance show business photographer in Japan to do a series of photo shoots. Both are alienated from everything around them, unhappy in their marriages, unable to connect to the culture around them, and sleepless. One night both of them go to the bar rather than lay in bed awake, and they instantly click on some level. They spend the rest of their time together in Tokyo together (Charlotte's husband is out on an extended shoot), and they each discover in the other someone they enjoy, can confide in, and trust. Is it a love affair? A deep friendship? The beauty of the film is that we don't know. But we do get to witness two people, one famous and one unknown, one middle-aged and the other very young, connect on a very deep level.
Sofia Coppola has quickly established herself as a first rate director. Luckily, having a father who owns his own studio should guarantee that she is able to continue making films. Luckily, her talent as a director keeps this from being sheer nepotism. I liked THE VIRGIN SUICIDES, but her success with LOST IN TRANSLATION shows that that film wasn't a fluke.
This is the best film featuring Tokyo that I have ever seen made by a non-native of Tokyo. There is, of course, a wealth of great Japanese films featuring Tokyo, but these are all insider films, viewing Tokyo as they know it. It is, for them, home. But this film shows Tokyo as it appears from the outside, as it would appear to folks like me if they were to go there for the first time.
The film has one of the best, most satisfying, and completely ambiguous endings I have ever seen in any film. The beautiful thing is that no one knows how it ends. I'll not give any more away by saying more except to say that I don't think we, the viewers, are supposed to know how it ends. Very beautifully done.
As far as the future goes for Bill Murray, he already is committed to do the voice for feline Garfield in the movie of the same name (as unwilling as I will be to see that one, it will probably be a big success at the box office) and will star in Wes Anderson's next film. After this film and those, I think Murray will be back in a big way.

Giovanni Ribisi
