"Charmed" fans waiting while other series are produced.

"Charmed" is a fun, dramatic, and culture-crossing show enjoyed by thousands everywhere. Sure, it's had it's "ups and downs" just like any good series, but it was obviously enjoyed by the masses enough to show reruns on TNT in the mornings, but not enough to convince the producers to put the series on tape/DVD. I, for one, don't see any reason for the show to not be produced for distribution, unless it has something to do with the fact that it's about witches. This series is well written, with different plot twists every show. It has also been a way for bands and music artists to get some air time by playing at "P3", which for those of you who haven't watched the show yet, is the club that the Halliwell sisters own and operate. One of the things I like about the show is that it deals with real issues of life such as Leo and Piper trying to have a relationship, against the wishes of the "Elders". It's reminiscent of a "Romeo and Juliet" scenario. The show personifies the "good vs. evil" fight, and the joys & sorrows that come from being such a close-knit family as Phoebe, Piper, Prue (who left the show), and Paige are. However, until the "powers that be" decide that producing a DVD collection of Charmed will be a good investment and be as well-received as the collections of "Buffy", "Angel", "Law & Order", and other such Television series, I'll just have to try to catch my favorite team of heroines in the mornings. Blessed Be.

best of the series

My personal favorite of the series. MGM used to be the leader in releasing older catalog titles with pride but they seem to have lowered their standards much to the fans dismay. Why would you release this DVD in fullscreen? Region 2 has a widescreen DVD on this title. What a letdown from MGM....

Back when flying saucers roamed the earth . . .

This is a great movie. The earlier reviews do a nice job of summarizing the plot and characters, and the isolated world of this little Arctic base really does capture the viewer's interest, however implausible the notion of the world under attack by a giant vegetable. What makes this film especially enjoyable is the interplay between the characters, who represent the classic sci-fi melange of a brave military officer, his irreverent but loyal crew, intellectuals and scientists devoted to the pursuit of knowledge even when it places the whole group in danger, and of course, a very smart and beautiful woman who serves coffee because she decides she wants to, not because it's just the thing that the woman is supposed to do. Combine a solid cast with a fast-paced dialogue, and a great visual experience, and you have an entertaining movie that works. Apparently it wasn't much of a hit when it was first released at the height of Cold War tension in 1951, when the Korean War was still raging and people were still talking about flying saucers after the 1947 Roswell incident (whatever THAT was all about!), but it stands up very well 50 years later, especially when it is compared to some of the other sci-fi films of that period (and no, I won't bring up "Robot Monster" here). Great film; break out the popcorn and soda and have fun!

kodoos to Shyamalan

I just saw this movie yesterday. I went into it in a really excited mood, but as I sat there I felt somewhat bored throughout most of the movie. There were a number of good scenes, but many of them felt somewhat awkward; for example, during a certain scene with a gun the theatre was laughing. I felt that it was supposed to be dramatic, but it came off as comedic. I also felt that the kid in the movie was trying far too much to be the kid from the Sixth Sense. But, there was some gold amid the lead. The ending was extremely powerful, it seems that the director has a knack for those suprise endings. Unfortunately, this isn't enough to make up for the slow pace and unbelievablility of the rest of it. I still don't understand why the drugs weren't in that guy's pockets?
This movie might be good to rent, but I'd skip the $5-8 and long (though probably not for long) lines that it would cost to see it in the theatres.

A good mix of action and courtroom activity

This movie starts out with a few battle scenes which were well done and then drifts into a few courtroom scenes which are quite interesting. If you are an action buff then this movie will not satisfy you- the courtroom scenes require intellect to understand, therefore requiring a lot of patience to sit through them thought they are very well done. Myself I enjoyed those scenes. My friend who was watching it with me could not keep his eyes on the screen. I liked the movie very well as a whole, but I would only watch it again for the action scenes.

Great Movie! The villain is not gay though...

This movie is arguably the best of the 3 Lovely Soldier Sailor Moon movies released in North America. The story goes something like this: A long time ago, Mamoru(Darien) was in the hospital, and he made a friend who happened to be an alien from outer space. The alien had never had a friend before. the alien went back to space to find a gift for his friend, but was mind controled by an evil flower that wanted to destroy the world for some reason. Well, to make a long story short, Sailor Moon saved the day, and they all lived happily ever after. This movie also has the song "Moon Revenge" in it, which alone makes it worth the purchase. :) Oyeah, and Fiore(the villain), while perhaps looking a little fruitty, IS NOT GAY. He only has one friend in the whole universe, and It's Mamoru. If you were as socially inept as Fiore, you would act a little wierd too.. This movie is probably the most violent of the three, but thats not a big deal, since the anime is much worse. If you don't have any of the movies, I would suggest you get this one first, the S movie second, and SuperS last. Get all uncut subtitled, of course. The dubs are really bad and you'll be kicking yourself for wasting your money if you buy em.

Spellbinding Mystery Gorgeously Photographed!

Although this movie unfortunately opened to mixed critical reviews, after seeing I have to conclude that it is a film that (in my estimation, at least) comes very close to cinematic perfection. Seldom does one see such a powerfully depicted drama that also features the level of artistic accomplishment in terms of cinematography, accomplished acting, and general story line. Taken from the best-selling novel of the same name, this spellbinding tale of love, mystery and intrigue is set in the Pacific Northwest in the time period right after the end of World War Two, and deals with the undercurrents of deep-seated racism against a group of ethnic Japanese who had made their home for decades on the island depicted in the movie, and who were in many ways the most terribly and unjustly mistreated group within the United States during the war.
The movie version of the story is extremely well-told, and Ethan Hawke shows he has the chops to be a major star in his brilliant portrayal of the central figure in the unraveling of the mystery. Likewise, Sam Shepard and the rest of the cast does a sterling job in presenting this drama in a magnificently photographed and choreographed depiction of life and death in the sleepy little harbor where it all unfolds. One of the other reviewers mentioned the way in which the director has used his ability to interweave various elements such as the photography and the acting to spin his tale masterfully, and I have to agree the sum total of this effort is certainly much greater than the parts; the net result is simply terrific. This is a movie that deals with a painful aspect of American history quite well without either looking for easy answers or contriving convenient solutions, but it does manage to let us know that the only way to end such prejudice and fateful discrimination is through individual effort and personal growth. Two thumbs way up in this aisle seat for "Snow Falling On Cedars".
