The Worst Witch (The Movie) - movie DVD cover picture
A bit dated, but still charming

Before "Harry Potter" there was "The Worst Witch". Let me start out by saying that the effects in this film are not the greatest, but if you grew up watching this movie like I did it really doesn't make a difference. The story more than makes up for it. Every Halloween I looked forward to watching this movie and was very disappointed the years I missed it or it didn't air. I finally bought a copy on VHS for myself and watched it repeatedly. I am now looking forward to purchasing the DVD, as it is a definite must-have for Halloween. Tim Curry also does a great job adding a bit of campiness to the film, along with many of the other actors and it's a great followup to Fairuza Balk's first film "Return To Oz", which I also grew up watching.

Roman Holiday (Special Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
We've loved Audrey ever since

The world was introduced to Audrey Hepburn with this exceptional romantic comedy, and it's been a love affair between star and audience ever since. Gregory Peck plays a reporter working for an American newspaper in Rome who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime when a visiting princess (Hepburn) goes for a spree in the middle of the night. Thinking herself incognita, she eventually gives in to the sedative she was given back at the palace and in a drugged stupor ends up in his taxicab. The next day he shows her around the city, pretending to not to know who she is until he can get back to his typewriter and publish the story that will make him world famous. Unfortunately, a problem develops: he really begins to like her. William Wyler's direction is spiffy, Rome hasn't looked this good in ages, and Hepburn's fresh charm and adorable demeanor are simply to die for. A real classic!

This movie is great. It a great movie to learn and connect with God. It shows you what can happen within your lifetime. They do their best to try to show you waht the Tribulation will be like in the future. I would recommend this video to people that love action and real life happenings that will occur sometime on this earth.

Core Cassavetes

This film is another of Cassavetes' best. Like the others in this Pioneer series, the DVD is merely adequate: it delivers the picture and sound. Likewise, Ray Carney provides a brief analytical essay in the insert that should be useful to anyone not familiar with Cassavetes' film art. We're lucky to have this film available in any form, so there's not much more to say!

Pay It Forward - movie DVD cover picture
A good and bad movie

With its warm, original premise and Oscar-pedigree cast, this could have been a decent "family values" kind of movie if it wasn't sabotaged in its dying moments by an utterly pointless surprise climax and a hideously mawkish ending. It skirts self-indulgence for 100 minutes then drives full speed over the brink. But without the emotional setup this kind of ending requires, rather than weeping you'll probably be rolling your eyes. The film runs slightly long, but thankfully the performances from Spacey, Hunt and "that kid" (Haley Joel Osment) are magnificent throughout, so at least there's something interesting to look at - other than your watch. On paper, this must have looked like gold: a best-selling novel, an Academy-blessed cast, and even the music from "American Beauty". Proof yet again that films designed to garner Oscars rarely do.

eye opener for the naive

Cold mountain really woke me up. Sure, we've all heard about wars. We've studied them, read about them, heard about them on the news but have u watched cold mountain? Of course i can't say a hollywood dramatization does war justice, but it got my attention. The story is about a man in the civil war who gets a letter from his lonely and poor girlfriend to come home. He braves all sorts of peril to return to her. It's sad, dramatic, romanic, funny, and ironic, but so, so, so good. I loved it. A word to the wise: don't take the kids to this one, and if you're a kid: don't watch it with your parents.

Ripley's Game - movie DVD cover picture
Superb Psychological Drama....Malkovich is the Devil Incarnate !!

The highest praise I can give to any movie is that, while watching it, I begin to dread the fact that it will end. I found this story to be THAT enjoyable....and then some.

The lead character, Ripley, is presented as a well-aged version of the sociopathic con artist played by Matt Damon in "The Talented Mr. Ripley". As played by the inimitable John Malkovich, this older, wiser Ripley is infinitely more sophisticated, sly, treacherous, and fascinating. He lives in a wonderful Italian villa with a gorgeous wife/mistress who knows and embraces his true nature. When publicly insulted by a neighbor, played by Dougray Scott, he initiates a plot to gain revenge, ultimately turning the innocent man into a hired killer who is then tortured by his own conscience....a punishment that could never affect the consciousless, sociopathic Mr. Ripley.

Malkovich is a unique actor, never content to merely show up and speak his lines convincingly, he actually BECOMES the character...and every devilish smile, lick of the lips, flash of anger, etc. becomes an expressive action by the character, not by the actor. He is so completely suited to this role that it is impossible to envision anyone else playing the part.

The dialog is wonderful....complex, intellectually stimulating, and natural. Indeed, some of the comments on the nature (and absence) of conscience and guilt achieve the level of fine literature. Conversations are generally riveting, the humor is generally very dark, and the suspense reaches Hitchcockian levels. As the Scott character, who is dying of leukemia, sinks deeper and deeper into the depravity of his hapless plight, he actually begins to seek, rather than fear, death.

This is a very sophisticated, emotionally involving story that will appeal strongly to mature viewers. It never received the attention it deserved, and ranks among the best of the "undiscovered" movies. I give it my highest recommendation.
