A Mind Trip Into The Human Condition in A Digital Age

Naqoyqatsi is a masterpiece! The conclusion of a visual and musical journey into the condition of human beings that started with the booming chorus of Koyaanisqatsi, and the technological advances that allowed men to conquer space, passing by the effect of globalization on cultures and diversity in Powaaqatsi, and ending in the last scene of Naqoyqatsi with a digitilized human floating away into oblivion in a darkness of nothingness that is space. It is a philosophical mind trip, almost psychadelic like no other film managed to take. But then again the 'qatsi' trilogy do not resemble any other film. The sheer power of images is the narrative, actors, plot and essential core of this unique cinematic experience, blended perfectly with the music of Philip Glass, and loosely connected by their main theme, but vary greatly from the intense, the fast-paced,the spiritual, to the haunting.Naqoyqatsi I felt was the closest to the original in terms of these images (the space rockets, the waves, the cars, the oil rigs..),and in terms of the initial message of director Reggio, and as such it becomes the prefect ending to this marvellous saga.Yet what distinguishes Naqoyqatsi from the other previous two films is the music of Glass. In the last of this trilogy, he SURPASSES himself, and manages to write his best work to date, pieces of classical music that at times have the same structure of Koyaanisqatsi but vastly developed,at others loosely inspired by Shostakovitch's Introduction in The Gadfly but remaining original thoughout. All the score enriched by the melancholic and beautiful cello of the hugely talented Yo Yo Ma. This music touched me like no other soundtrack or modern music managed to do in a long long time, and contributed greatly in itself to giving a breath of life to the barrage of digital images. Minimalist music never sounded more melodic and effective as it did in Glass's score for Naqoyqatsi. This leaves me with one point I have to make, which I think is vital, Naqoyqatsi should be judged and reviewed with all three films in mind and not on its own.Surely,by itself, it is a very ambitious and haunting piece of work, but when seen in the context of the whole trilogy as a fitting end to the journey taken throughout the three films,it becomes more poignant, and its impact much more effective. The constant digital images might not be to everyone's liking, but then again nor probably will the message of the film:the condition that the human race have reached in this unstoppable and virtually insane technological progress. These digital images can be seen as a mirror to that progress, that perfectly reflect that condition and the way we might very well be heading.Naqoyqatsi is a MUST buy, a film that will captivate your senses, touch you deeply and make you think hard, a feat director Godfrey Reggio should be applauded and praised for.

To Believe In Fairies

This movie is just a real treasure. It's great for anyone who still loves magic and Peter Pan. Jason Isaacs's performance as both Mr. Darling and Captain Hook is, in short, brilliant. His acting with Jeremy Sumpter (Peter Pan) and Rachel Hurd-Wood ( Wendy Darling ) is really just pure magic. Jeremy is a wonderful Peter. With his good looks and golden curls he almost makes me think of the sun god, Apollo. Just his presence is unique and it is very hard to take your eyes off him, because his acting is so believable.

I also strongly believe that the movie just wouldn't be the same if it weren't for the music and the artwork. The costumes are brilliant and really make the cast stand out. Everyone works so well together. The special featuers are also a special treat. Duchess Sarah Fergusoneven gives a little speach about Peter Pan's past and his meaning in today's society. You also learn about some of the tragedies that author John Berrie faced as a young boy, and the first idea that became the Peter Pan story.

This is a great family movie. It's good for the parents to watch with the kids. It teaches kids how to help friends, and facts and points about having to grow up. But of course the real treasure that lies in Peter Pan is the beautiful magic itself.

For all those who are still dreming of another world

Oh my God! This is just a supreme movie which captured me at the tender age of 5 years old. When I was a child I thought I was going to get tired of it when I grew up. BUT NO. Now I am 19, and I'm still enjoying the magic and fantasy of Labyrinth, and will let Henson's bequest to my descendants. Needless to say that this so 80's look in all the hair, costumes and music has remained until today, without looking so old fashioned as in other similar movies.
From the "Underground" credits to the touching end, this movie is better than anyone could think just by looking at its plot or its cover. It's not about a girl who has to get trough a labyrinth to get back her brother. It is deeper,it's about the negation of growing up, about being in self-created world full of criatures you've ever dreamed of. Labyrinth is about me and all those people in the world who still believe in another land where you can live a never ending childhood.
At the end of the movie Hoggle and Sir Didymus say: "Should you need us, should you need us for any reason at all...". Then, I need you Hoggle, Sarah, Jareth, Ludo, all of you, just to make my own private fantasy land complete and real.
I KNEEL DOWN TO YOU, SIR HENSON

One of the best Jesus movies

A disclaimer appears prior to the start of this movie that clearly states that this film is fiction and is not considered by Scorcese to tbe the 5th Gospel. Therefore, this film is not blasphemy.
I am a strong Christian and this is one my favorite Jesus movies. I approached this film with an open mind, reserving my criticism until the movie was over. Scorcese said that in this portrayal Jesus doesn't sin,but he does: he says after the stoning of the prostitute scene that he "wanted to kill" those people trying to stone Mary Magdelene. In scripture Christ Himself states that wanting to kill somebody is a sin. That aside, this film is not blasphemy. It simply presents the what-ifs.
You are to watch this film and ponder whether or not Jesus was tempted on the cross (Don't you think he would have felt the urge to get down?). This film is an excellent life-application tool for Christians as well. Jesus meets John the Baptist, who has a rather crazy following. His followers all run around naked, and try to exorcise their demons and pay for their sins by cutting themselves, among other things. John the Baptist tells Jesus that he prepared thw way for Jesus: with an axe. He hands Jesus the axe and tells him to wreak vengeance on those who don't obey God.
In many ways, this is a trap Christians can get into. We sometimes aren't very compassionate to sinners and act very pious. The Catholic Church in particular has a dark history of punishing sinners and pagans.
Later, Jesus changes his message from one of wrath and law to one of love and gospel. This is the way Christians should behave.
At one point jesus is sitting next to the edge of a cliff, and in a fit of anger, throws a rock over the cliff, and yells "God hates me! God want to toss me over!" We can all relate to that feeling. Sometimes we are overcome by sins that we feel that God is angry with us and wants to punish us.
The scene of most controversy is the last temptation, which is ridiculous. There is nothing sinful about Jesus getting married and then having sex with Mary. That is sex INSIDE wedlock, and the sex scene is very passive. (The scene previous to it is with Mary wearing a crown of flowers and hugging Jesus. This is their wedding. This scene is pretty passive, so people think that the next scene (sex) is premarital) It is only a temptation, it never happens. The last 30 minutes of the film are all a temptation, an exploration of Jesus' earthly life had he rejected his chosen crucifixion and lived a mortal life. On his death bed Jesus realizes his mistake and pleads to God to have him crucified. Jesus stays on the cross and saves mankind.
A very moving film. Please note that neither I nor Martin Scorsese believe that this is a true account. It simply explores the possibilities of just how human the human side of Jesus' dual nature MIGHT have been. Highly recommended. I will warn Christians considering viewing this movie that you should take the disclaimer to heart and that there is lots of nudity in this film that might offend you.

About Time

I am so excited to see this put out there, I have full intentions on owning it and I hope this is the start for the line up to come out season by season. I praise Lifetime for keeping it on the air as long as it has because this and the Golden Girls are my two favorite Lifetime shows. The Designing Women have become like family, I always get excited when I watch them even though I have seen every episode a million times. They are so colorful and quick witted you have no choice but to fall in love with them. From Julia's Rants to Charlene's sweetness to Mary Jo's curiosity and Suzannes beauty and you can't forget the 5th designing woman... Anthony who actually made a wonderful addition to the cast. The things they put him through are enough to keep watching. Keep up the good work and hopefully we'll see more Designing Women series come out.

Excellent movie

Johnny Depp brings another quirky character to life. In contrast to reviews I read other places, I believe the rest of the movie stands well by itself (however the performance of Johnny Depp definitely makes it a 5 star instead of a 3)

WOW

WOW..and WOW.. and WOW and WOW and WOW!
How have I never heard of this movie before?!?!?To read the reviews here, I thought I was in for another mindless action movie (always welcome of course) but I was treated to something very much more special.
This is a thought searing movie, to say the least. Have you read 1984? Or seen Blade Runner? Or Apple Computer's "1984" ad? This is there. This is great. This is art. It really is.
The movie itself was very well thought out and detailed.. down to the shape of the "drug" pills they took. Scenes like the re-organizing of his desk, with the background dialog perfectly syncronising the scene, give testament to the thought and detail put into the movie. It also makes me sad at the shlock that Hollywood turns out these days. Kudos to the director, writer and actors.
I didnt expect much going into this, and I was really really surprised. To read amazons comment : "Based on customer purchases, this is the #39 early adopter product in cult movies", after seeing this movie, that comment makes me shiver - im not sure why. Forshadowing our future?
In anycase, Im going to see the Cruxshadows so cant write more, but take my advice, if you're a thinking person, rent this movie. Its worth the time/money.
P.S. Im glad to see the guy from Lord of the Rings/Ronin play a noble part for once!

Superb movie all around

This brilliant movie uses the Son of Sam murders as a backdrop to a riveting tale about the lives of ordinary people struggling to get by when an entire city is held hostage by terror. John Leguizamo is amazing in the lead role, adroitly capturing all facets of his character. The audience is forced to love and hate the character, pity and admonish him. He's a good person who makes stupid choices and gets in way over his head. Sounds like the perfect everyman to me!
Adrien Brody is likewise magnificent. His character's tortured intellect is both striking and foolish; a difficult dichotomy to carry off so well.
I watched this primarily to see Anthony LaPaglia, but unfortunately, he's not in it that much. His brief scenes are good, though.
Overall, I think this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. This is the first time I've given any Amazon review five stars. I'm very stingy with that fifth star, but this film deserves it.

Visually wow!

I watch AV3X almost every day. It does a great job of inducing a meditative state in just a few minutes, and a major bonus is that it's such a pleasure to watch. The visuals are amazing. I used to watch another meditation video which I considered quite beautiful; now that I've been watching AV3X, I've found that the other video pales in comparison.

It is so obvious that Christopher Oliver put a great deal of effort into creating AV3X. I just emailed him at his website (christopheroliver.com), and he told me that a new dvd along the same lines is in the works. Yea!
