A Kid Classic

Get ready to fall in love with a big furry, well, Totoro. This movie takes place in Japan pre-WWII and revolves around 2 young girls moving into a mysterious new house on the edge of a forest. Together they become friends with the King of the Forest: Totoro. Kids and adults of all ages fell in love with Totoro when the movie was 1st released in Japan and he continues to be a merchandising powerhouse (and logo) for Studio Ghibli--the Japanese Disney--even today.
Totoro, however, is better than your average Disney flick. No singing candlesticks, no violence, no death. The drama comes from family situations from a childs point of view. And not everything in this film is pre-packaged and shrink-wrapped. The story allows a childs imagination to work into the story, too.
If you're just a parent looking for a great DVD for your kids, then get this DVD now! It's a bargain at $10. However, if you're a fan of anime and the DVD format in general, I suggest you wait until Aug. 2004 when a special 2 disc DVD set is released in the USA by Disney of all people.

Superb acting and story!

Jack Lemmon gives an outstanding portrayal of C.C. Baxter, an insurance company employee for Consolidated Insurance in Manhattan. C.C. has been secretly lending the key to his apartment to co-workers so they could bring their mistresses somewhere to have an affair, often leaving him locked out. Fran Kubelik [Shirley MacLaine] is an elevator attendant in the office who C.C. has a crush on. Little does he know that she's been having an affair with his boss, J.D Sheldrake [Fred MacMurray], in his apartment.
I have never seen a movie where drama and comedy have been mixed together so well. The Apartment is one of the finest movies I've ever seen. The acting from all of the stars is superb and the writing is wonderful. In 1960, it won the Oscar for best picture, best screenplay and best director [Billy Wilder was great] and deserved all of them.
Although there aren't any special features with the DVD [the clarity is great, though], you don't care with a movie this good.

I love Scooby Doo

Did you ever watch a movie, watch it again and watched ityet another time, but just never grew tired of seeing it?That is how our family feels about this movie. Set on Spooky Island, the Scooby Gang sets out to solve amystery, but not as a group, they each plan to figure this oneout alone. The characters are charming, the special effectsare great, the mystery is just right for all ages. This was one of those movies that you are sorry it is over.Very well done, great job all the way around!

Out of the Past - movie DVD cover picture
An unwanted blast from the past

A heavy lidded Robert Mitchum gets haunted by his past when he is inadvertantly detected by an associate of a wealthy gangster. Mitchum, playing Jeff Bailey, now operating a service station in a small California town, had previously worked as a slick, smooth talking detective. He had been hired by calculating gangster Whit Sterling, played by Kirk Douglas to track down his girlfriend Kathy Moffat played by the ravishing Howard Hughes discovery Jane Greer. The scheming Greer had shot Douglas and absconded with $40,000 fleeing to parts unknown.

Mitchum caught up with Greer in Acapulco. They eventually hook up and lead a life together on the lam until they are discovered by Mitchum's former partner hired by the unforgiving Douglas. At this point Greer double crosses Mitchum and runs off.

Years pass and Mitchum, tiring of evading Douglas is persuaded to meet him in his palatial Lake Tahoe mansion. Douglas convinces Mitchum that he will forget the past if he performs a service for him. He is to steal some papers from an attorney that implicate him as a tax cheat. Douglas is actually setting up Mitchum to be framed for murder, using the lawyers' gorgeous secretary Rhonda Fleming as an accomplice.

What follows is a film noir classic that is replete with deceit and double cross. The excellent acting cast is bolstered by a glibly written screenplay which enhances the well conceived plot.

Wonderful

This film is not meant to be a serious Bond-film,so do not compare it with the official ones. The plot is a mess.It is filled with gigantig holes that you could drive an Aston Martin through.Niven should have played an official Bond,he is terrific,as is Peter Sellers and Ursula Andress.Best of all is probably Orson Welles as villainous Le Chiffre. His card-battle with Tremble is one real high-point in Bond-history,most because of it`s style.Le Chiffre is sadly killed off all to early.Woody Allen is also great, although he personally loathes the film. The film has eight writers(only three credited)and five directors,so it is all very unlogic but, heck, really funny. One of the worst films ever made, still somehow a masterpiece!
