A GREAT GREAT Scorsese/DeNiro collaboration! Must see!

I love both Robert DeNiro(in my eye's he's "never" made a poor film!)and the brilliant Scorsese, so you know were this 'review' is headed. However, before I continue, I must again, PLEAD for Martin & Robert to hurry & do as many more projects together, as possible, because we(me)just haven't seen enough! Guy's; neither of you is getting any younger, & the chances of the both of you doing more projects together, is getting slimmer & slimmer! Especially w/Mr.Scorsese having to take nearly 3 years to get the brilliant "Gangs of New York" from the film cans to the screen! Please more!I personally can't think of another Actor/Director combo, who's bonds are so tight, & backgrounds so similar! These two are the only pair that have ever made so manyfilms that are of the higest quality conceivable.
Ok i'll keep this short.(Maybe) This film has always been 1 of my fave films w/the 2 "geniuses" working together! I always loved it, because out of the body of work both did together, this HAS to rank as the quirkiest. It's plain scary! Not "Max Cady" scary(which was also brilliant & another Oscar should have gone to Bobby Milk, & Scorsese was jobbed out of his 1st Best Director Oscar AGAIN! How can the Academy give every conceivable Oscar to the greatest Movie of the past 60+ years[Raging Bull]& Marty NOT win Best Director? A travesty, a joke![as is the Academy]rather, a creepy, slimey edgey type of scary, that is soclose to surface reality it is devestating! As Scorsese used the camera in "Cape Fear" to make the audient feel claustrophobic, w/o any way of escaping what's in the frame, his camera work hereis equally erie in a completely different but somehow familiar effect of placing your mind in the midst of the insanity! It's not just the insanity of Pupkin's world, but slyly shows the insnaity of the entertainment world, & how bleak & unapproachablethese "tv people" are.
Our 1st real glimpse at DeNiro playing "some" comedy.(Not when Pupkin attempts to be funny, rather when his deranged mind attempts to placate Lewis when Pupkin & Bernhard break into his house, or many other instances) DeNiro is just so bizzare here, it's beautiful. Why this film did'nt go over well w/audiences & 'critic's"(what do they know anyway?)is beyond comprehension.
This is a classic,a wonderfully, dark look at another 1 of Scorsese's character's(written much the way it plays)and DeNiro's uncanny ability to "become" the person on the page! If you've never seen this, then treat yourself by buying the DVD to give you a little something extra, & more insight into the world of DeNiro & Scorsese! buy it. Just a pleasure to watch, & feel.
Again(in the slim chance that either would read reveiws on this forum) I beg you two to get as many joint projects from the scripts to the finished projects, as it may never, ever happen again where 1 brilliant actor & an equally brilliant filmaker, are paired so perfectly! In fact I doubt that it will.

i was never a fan.....

of andy kaufman. i didn't find him particularly funny. but when i saw this film, with jim carrey doing a flawless performance (so flawless that the people who knew kaufman best couldn't believe it), i understood more of what made kaufman tick. i still don't find him funny, but now i understand why he did what he did. an amazing movie, and an amazing performance, make this film worth the money. a great journey of a man that was vastly misunderstood, and i find myself sympathetic to his efforts, and heartbroken at the untimely and painful way he died.

Seinfeld at his best

Seinfeld live on Broadway is a "no regrets" DVD. Its a great looking performance that puts you in the best seat of the audience. Jerry dishes out over an hour of his best material delivered "for the last time" and it is hilarious even after repeat viewings. You can read some of the jokes on the back of the DVD, but it's Seinfeld's delivery that brings them to life and keeps the jokes fresh and funny. One of the great additions on this DVD that isn't on the tape is an impromptu audience Q & A with Jerry. The audience fires off a variety of what I thought were some pretty dull questions. "How's your new apartment?" "Say, Hello Newman." Jerry answers every one with responses that are as funny as the show material. The disc is not rated but it is funny and great for the whole family. My mom at 60 and my niece who is just eight love watching the VHS of this show again and again. The DVD is even better.

The Passion of the Christ !!!!!!

Mel Gibson out did himself. What a wonderful portrayal of the suffering Christ did for us. The stories within the Story were excellent. The whole movie made you feel like you were there. When Jesus was being beaten, I felt as if I had caused this to happen to him - and in actuality, I had. It was for OUR - EVERYONES! sin that he had to die. What a wonderful gift Jesus gave us and what a great movie to show us of His love. Great Job Mel!!!!

Stander - movie DVD cover picture
The sleeper film of the year

This film was only shown about half a dozen times in obscure places over the country, but from what I've heard it looks to be the underground hit of the year. It's amazing how little buzz was recieved, but it's finally coming to DVD in December, just as King Arthur comes out too.

The movie is about a guy named John Stander, played by the underrated Thomas Jane who seems to have the worst luck in getting decent acting roles. He is a South African cop, who is fed up with the brutality of police towards a revolution. So therefore, he decides to go into crime, and becomes one of the most successful bank robbers in history. As quirky a plot as this may seem, it's supposedly all a true story.

I don't know any technical details yet about the DVD itself, but it's only a couple of months away. Anyway, check this out. It's promising to be a big underground sucess.

Fun and Great Soundtrack

A cheerful mix of humor and suspenseful horror set to a fabulous soundtrack. I liked it better than the original movie, American Werewolf In London, partly because it's less angsty and has more delightful shocks. Terror with a playful edge, like a rollercoaster ride, full of enjoyable "rush" moments.

A group of American guys are touring Europe and competing with each other in a game where they gain points from daring and outrageous stunts. Our lead guy plans to bungee jump off the Eiffle Tower, but in the middle of his night time dare, he sees a beautiful French girl about to leap to her death... He saves her life, but she disappears leaving him obsessed with finding her again.

It's a dark love story with loads of humor and of course Werewolves. Good movie to watch with friends who like supernatural flicks with sexy rock, neo noir soundtracks.

Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

My first thought when Sci-Fi Channel began airing ads for this new adaptation of Dune was to groan. After Lynch's hatchet job in the 80's, one could truly go no where but up. Lynch is perfect for horror and mystery, but should stay away from dramatic Sci-Fi. This adaptation does away with 'creative license' such as 'heart plugs', reworking the Wierding Way as a sound weapon, pus sores on the Baron, and other Lynch style horror imagery. Harrison also does not destroy the ending as Lynch does. This version, however, does have it's own draw backs. Casting comes to mind. William Hurt, usually a surpurb actor, was terribly miscast as the Duke. His acting, for some reason, is lifeless and disappointing. Also, the obvious reuse of some sets (while they are very beautiful) takes away somewhat from the visual impact. The lack of hearing the characters thoughts (the one thing Lynch did well) causes the loss of some very important information as far as the characters go. Overall, however, the TV adaptation is astonishing in just how much it does convey from the book. The plot is as faithful as can be considering that a true adaptation would run in to 8 or 9 hours!

Even more powerful than The Power of Now

After finding his book 'The Power of Now' such an amazing read, I was very interested in seeing and hearing Eckhart Tolle teaching. I could not have been more impressed - this is even more powerful than the book that I loved.

It is such a liberating experience to sit there and absorb the teaching as Tolle gently strips away the layers of illusion we mis-interpret as ourself. I have watched these DVD's on their entirety four times now, and each viewing is as fresh as the first time.

This is the most powerful spiritual teaching I have ever read or viewed - I cannot recommend it highly enough.
