5 Stars for the Movie

Everybody has run off a review of this well-known flick! I won't be buying a copy of the DVD until it is properly letterboxed. I compared my letterboxed VHS copy with my full screen copy. Yes, there was a little more information on the sides, but tops of head were cut off where they shouldn't have been (anyone who has read the Robert Bloch novel on which it is based might take that as a pun!). The VHS and DVD version are letterboxed at 1:85, while I would be willing to bet that the original movie was 1:66 as is "North by Northwest" so-letterboxed on my laser copy. What's with this "over letterboxing". Is someone trying to fool someone? The same goes for "Silence of the Lambs" and many other films new and old. In any event, no one should be tampering with any movie on video, classic or not. And as for those who say that the knife in the shower scene never touches flesh should watch it in slow motion (preferably frame-by-frame) and you will see the knife contact with that lovely belly!

It really is where the heart is.

Yes, even a guy can handle this movie. Not a typical chick flick; it was actually entertaining with not too much "Beaches" or "Mermaids" stuff that men run away from. Natalie Portman does a great job of playing her character, but you can tell she's capable of much more. And much respect goes out to her for refusing to be in the movie until they cut out a sex scene.

The Sopranos - The Complete First Season - movie DVD cover picture
Topped only by the following seasons

Anything Sopranos on DVD is a perfect fit for those without HBO, and season one is no exception. It begins with James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano heading in for an appointment with his psychiatrist, Dr. Melfi. Although he is often frustrated with his continuing personality development sessions with the good doctor, he becomes attached to her as the season progresses. The two other forces in Tony's life are his families: One being his blood relations, and the other being his mafia business associates. Throughout the series he plays a balancing act between them.
Many of the Sopranos' actors and actresses were no-names to the mass media before this season, and they unquestionably deserve their current recognition. These actors and actresses live their roles. After watching even a few episodes on these discs, you WILL think Tony and Carmela, not James and Edie. These people are this good. Just wait until you meet Ralphie two seasons later!
Negatives? The special features in this box set are not as special one may expect. As for the show itself, it is a bit unnerving when marriage vows are ignored and people are murdered in broad daylight without consequence. Even so, this DVD set is worth the money and then some. If you can stand profanity, violence and dark humor in the face of an excellent plot driven by incredible character performances, this show is for you. This is the opening season to the best television drama to date.

Delightful and enchanting candy for the eye and heart

The most compelling part of AMELIE is the way that it tantalises the eyes. While the viewer knows in his or her heart that Paris never really looked this clean or beautiful, the film nevertheless manages to delight every second of its 122 minute run time. The colors, the light, the imagery, the fantasy: all blends together to entrance and excite the viewer. In this way, the film harkens back to the earliest films made, those by another resident of Paris, Lumiere. There was no real point to those little films except to startle and delight the viewer, and in that sense the film follows very much in that tradition.
Audrey Tautou is a wonder! I hope that she makes very many films. She is utterly adorable, and a delight to look at with her black hair and apparently matching eyes. With a lesser actress, this film might have been fun to look at, but would not have engaged the viewer emotionally. As it is, we care very much for her to find happiness in addition to helping others to find it, because we come to like her. The rest of the cast was also very enjoyable. I especially enjoyed Serge Merlin as "The Glass Man," socalled because he has especially brittle bones. The film conceit of having him constantly work on hyperrealistic copies of paintings of Renoir works marvelously, though he shouts so loudly a couple of times that I was surprised that he didn't break a couple of ribs.
Everything in this film conspires to make it an enjoyable experience. Visually, as I have mentioned, it is utterly stunning. The cinematography and the art direction is just extraordinary. I loved the soundtrack, and for the hour or two after seeing this the strains of the accordion kept playing through my head.
All in all, this is as enjoyable a piece of eye candy as I have encountered in a long, long time. It is as visually arresting as another recent film set in Paris, MOULIN ROUGE, but I personally found the film as a whole far more enjoyable.

Great!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot say much about these shows - as I have not seen them for over five years. What I can say though, is that I would still recomend them for anyone who has not rotted their brains on today's garbage.

Disney and McGoohan - a combination as great as McGoohan and Falk!!

Pleasantly Surprised

If you are a strugling writer, you will want to add this movie to your video collection for those times when you feel like giving up the craft. Take a well-written, creative script, interspersed with comedic wit, mix with wonderful acting by all participants, and you end up with a truly unique movie. A poignant story about a youthful writer who inspires a washed up writer-turned-teacher to see life the way it's meant to be viewed: in its simplest form. A very enjoyable movie.

Great Wonderful Funny Movie

Wonderful casting in this movie. I took my 6 yr old daughter and we had a blast. The story is about a fish, Nemo, who was taken from his father, Marlin, by a fisherman and put in a fishtank in a dentist's office where he is awaiting delivery to the dentist's niece, who is quite frankly, very evil and quite homely. EEK!!Anyway, Marlin goes in search of Nemo and befriends Dory, a fish with some problems remembering things. Hilarity ensues and the plot is quite predictable but it is cute and Ellen Degeneres, who was the voice for "Dory" is soooooo funny. She was the "only" person who could have done justice to this part. She was perfect. perfect. perfect! The animation by Pixar was outstanding. Overall, a very good movie for the family. Definitely one to buy.

Amazing acting and script

"Urbania" is one of the best films I've ever seen. If the director had been more disciplined with his editing and chopped out about ten minutes in draggy spots, this easily would have been much, much bigger at the box office. Dan Futterman is incredible -- I knew he could act, but I never knew he was SO excellent! I bought one copy of the film and lent it to a friend who won't give it back because he loves it so much, and I bought another copy for another friend. Now I have to buy a new one for me. "Urbania" is not a lighthearted film but it is fearless, horrifying, gratifying and beautiful.
