Absolutely Spellbinding

I finally watched "the Passion" yesterday, Easter Sunday. Wow! It was quite an experience. It seems like most of the criticism of the film is centered on the violence. Well folks, let's be honest here. The suffering you see in "the Passion" is probably a lot closer to what actually happened to Jesus than the sanitized version of events most of us have cooked up in our minds. We've all know the lines from the Apostles' Creed: "Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried." We've recited those lines that they've probably lost their impact on us. Some of us try to portray Jesus as a sort of "feel-good" type who was just hangin' out with the disciplines, chomping on fish and bread, when in reality, he became a marked man, hated by the Temple authorities and ultimately put to death in (probably) his early 30s in the most gruesome form possible. To be a Christian back then was a very, very dangerous thing. It was a time of brutality. If a 1st-century Christian were to see this picture, he/she might not be shocked at all. Sensibilities have changed. This is not to suggest that the R-rating is unwarranted or that children should freely see it, but I do think that, for those of us that consider ourselves Christians, this is a part of Jesus's life that we have to come to grips with. Let's not gloss over the fact that this man, guilty of no wrongdoing, brutally suffered and died. Think of our lives now, and our "sufferings" pale in comparison. I walked away from this picture feeling uplifted and empowered. (If there's one complaint I have, it's that the scene of the risen Christ is too brief, but what can you do.) Our lives are salvageable. A film like this helps you to appreciate the things you really have.

Great movie!

I saw this movie in theaters probably when it first came out in 2001, but I didn't pay too close attention, because I forgot about it. However, I remembered seeing it in theaters one day when I was browsing the DVD section, and decided to give it another shot at home. I am so glad I did! Leelee Sobieski is absolutely gourgeous and did a flawless job with the film. She has a bright future in acting ahead of her. Basically what happens is, Ruby (Sobieski) and her brother Rhett's (Trevor Morgan) parents die in a car accident. Their parents wished for them to go live with the family's former neighbors, the Glasses, (who had since moved to Malibu) played by Stellan Skarsgard and Diane Lane. Needless to say, Ruby and Rhett's carefree lives are changed dramatically. Rhett falls for all the gifts that the Glasses buy for him, but Ruby isn't fooled so easily. She begins to suspect that her parents' death wasn't an accident, and starts to investigate. She sees certain things and observes certain behaviors exhibited by the Glasses that only make her more suspicious. Eventually, she figures out that the Glasses are behind the car accident and are now after Ruby and Rhett's 4 million dollar fortune that was left to them by their parents. I won't give away the rest, but the movie takes you on a roller coaster ride of excitement and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last second! Rent it, or better yet, buy it! It's well worth your while!

Shocking in its honesty !!

As an ex-pat Kiwi living in the States, I have been tempted to show this movie to American friends. However, I am not sure how many of them could handle the brutality whilst still appreciating the skill of the actors ! Both Tem Morrison and Rena Owen are superb as the main characters. I have seen this movie twice and would watch it again, I feel it is an honest portrayal of domestic violence that must happen in SOME homes. A real eye opener and not for the faint hearted !! This rated as an all time "reality check" for many New Zealanders - myself included !! A sequel to this movie is currently showing in NZ and will hopefully be released on video.

The Wire - The Complete Second Season - movie DVD cover picture
Amen!

I just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of praise here. The Wire is by far the best TV series I've ever seen. The writing is simply masterly, allowing the audience to easily follow about three dozen characters and at least three different (yet tightly interwoven) plotlines. The dialogue is funny, clever, and moving while still remaining realistic. The characters are memorable, complicated, and interesting without being implausibly bizarre or phonily quirky. The acting is superb and completely convincing, right down to the smallest role. (In fact, it's often the minor characters who haunt my memories--I still can't forget Wallace's heartwrenching last scene, or D's either.)

I've seen all three seasons of The Wire now and it maintains a remarkable consistency throughout. No rambling or dumbing down at all. Season Two expands the social/geographical range of Season One (Police headquarters and the black ghetto) to include the decaying working-class white neighborhoods and Baltimore's moribund shipping industry. Season Three will get into City Hall and one gutsy cop's decision to end the War on Drugs.

Although I have enjoyed other HBO series, such as The Sopranos and Deadwood, I often feel they sacrifice a certain amount of credibility by forcing their characters into situations that are just too contrived, with resolutions that are just too convenient. I also detect a fair amount of padding in these shows. There's none of that in The Wire. Every detail feels authentic--as it probably is, since the writers David Simon and Ed Burns are, respectively, a seasoned Baltimore crime reporter and a twenty-year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department. And every detail grows out of something already established and leads to a satisfying payoff later on. The Wire is tight. It won't insult your intelligence, and it rewards close attention and repeated viewings--which makes DVD the ideal medium for watching it.

I love this series!

I've watched this series on DVD many, many times since I bought it. The acting, the portrayals, and the costuming are amazing. This series is about as historically accurate as drama is going to get. It does suffer from some of the drawbacks of early 70s television-bad lighting, no changes of camera angle, the occasional awkward zoom effect, etc. but that hardly detracts from the series' compelling watchability. This is a must-see for anyone who loves the Tudor period.

Yoga Journal's Yoga Practice for Energy

This is a fabulous yoga video. The way it is sectioned off is very convenient because it allows you to do only the sections that you feel you need at the time. I like this feature of the video because I have two small children and, with frequent interruptions, find it difficult sometimes to do all the sections at one time. It's definitely for those who have already had some instruction on how to do the poses. It helped me to first attend a yoga class with an instructor who can spend some one-on-one time showing me the correct way to do the poses.

Leave this film alone.

This film is a scary movie. I've seen movies that couldn't scare an infant, The Ring, and I have to say that this is taking too much heat. What is wrong with it? I don't see any problem with it. When do you watch a horror movie for the acting or story? You watch horror movies to see jumps, scares, gore, sex, drugs, nudity, and especially a sick sense of humor that when you think about it when you laugh, you feel like you must be the most evil person ever. ... I don't care if a horror movie has bad acting, the acting should make you just want to watch to see their fate. I want enough to get the the scares, gratuitous nudity, drugs, sex, and gore. I don't care if the story is Citizen Kane, horror movies are meant for people to just shut their brains down and watch something that they can talk with their friends about later. A popcorn movie. Enjoy this MASTERPIECE because one day this film will be out of print. Hurry!
