I was there... I think...

This is a must have for the serious social and/or music historian or aficionado. Keep in mind the technology differences from the present day concerts. Notice the electrical cords coming from everything: mikes, instruments to amps, etc., the lack of ear piece monitor systems and also the fact that the music played is what you hear... there isn't a computerized mixing system in an 18 wheeler smoothing out the edges before the audience hears it. This is the real deal. Young artists performing before becoming superstars. A glimpse at the idealistic past where the slogan was make love not war, and the carefree children of the fifties were looking for a the last hoorah before relieving the watch in corporate America. Enjoy it! jv

The Chronicles of Narnia - The Silver Chair - movie DVD cover picture
A classic story and a spiritual allegory

If you have not read any of CS Lewis classic book series about Narnia, please do so. The stories are wonderfully written and will engage you like few other works. Part spiritual allegory and part fantasy and adventure, these stories are timeless.
My personal favorite of the 7 stories is this one: The Silver Chair. Starting with the unexpected trip into Narnia, the story involves the search for a missing prince and a dangerous and exciting journey to find him. While the plot is quickly engaging and always enjoyable, even after dozens of readings, in this story Lewis uses some of the most powerful of Christian allegories to depict faith, deception, and courage. Choices made along the way are often disastrous and are the result of convenience and comfort over faith. Truly a sound statement into our own journeys, and a spiritual struggle depicted accurately.
I will not spoil the plot, but if you have not enjoyed this series, pick up any of the seven books, or better yet get them all at once. The story starts either with "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" which was the first published, or "The Magician's Nephew" which is chronologically the first. Either way, you won't be disappointed. Next to "The Silver Chair", I also found "The Horse and His Boy" and "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" to be absolute classics.
Buy this series, and enjoy one of the true treasures in literature from a fabulous writer, the world renowned CS Lewis.

Completes The Mystery

This film was not on any of my lists of things to do or movies to see. However, I wound up doing the driving for the youngster and I was pleasantly surprised as well as confused. The two biggest money making films of the summer came equipped with a PG rating for the galaxy far away and long ago, and PG-13 for the arachnid from Manhattan. I understand that the movie industry has their own group that rate their own product, and that objectivity is based upon politics and influence. I am sure George Lucas could have gotten a G for his film if he had wanted to. The spider was appropriately rated especially when the gratuitous shot of Kirsten Dunst in a rain soaked t-shirt is included. Only Mr. Lucas could get a straight PG for a film that includes dismemberment and 4 decapitations, one performed in front of the victim's son.
My point is how did this film deserve a PG? This animated flick is not one of the new slick 3-d techno whiz films. The animation looks like it did a couple of decades ago, and the backgrounds are done like watercolors, they are more for impression, and do not compete for your eye. The film is loaded with traditional family fare, and for those older members of the audience, an Elvis soundtrack, albeit updated, gives the older folks something to enjoy.
The film is good, and the character of Cobra Bubbles voiced by Ving Rhames is one of the highlights of the film, Lilo is a riot. Disney borrowed heavily from some of Lucas's films, but how many movies are original anymore?
Great kid-flick, that should have been rated G.

An essential for a collection.

The Sixth Sense is an essential film for those who search for creativity and originality on screen. It's a wild rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. The tension mounts slowly but surely, and it's pretty much a supernatural sleuthing masterpiece, where when you watch it the second time round, you realize you had missed out some things out in the first viewing. It is not just another run-of-the-mill ghost story, believe me. This one you must see to believe.

Saint Joss Does It Again

Series cancelled mid-way through season. Network decides to screen episodes out of order. Series will not be bought by local networks. Sounds like a Firefly's a mess, right?
Wrong. Having immensely enjoyed Angel and Buffy, I figured I'd give this doomed series a chance and bought the box set from Amazon. And I have just spent an enjoyable weekend watching every episode in one hit.
A wonderfully quirky and cheesy premise is the springboard for yet another off-beat examination of humans learning about others and themselves. Just relax and let the crew of Serenity change your expectations of westerns and sci-fi. A very good ensemble cast bring to life scripts that are by turns funny, poignant and intelligent.
This is a very good series that, had it been given a chance, may well have become great. In addition to 14 really good episodes of Firefly, you get an excellent documentary that examines the series' brief life, built around candid interviews with the producers, writers and cast. The other extras are Ok but this is the pick of them.
If you're looking for something a cut above an actor with a bit of face paint uttering "engage the transwarp patillion conduit", buy this - you won't regret it.

Waco - The Rules of Engagement - movie DVD cover picture
This most important documentary in modern U.S. history.

The fact that this movie didn't win the Oscar for Best Documentary that it was nominated for is a conspiracy in itself (Let's just say leftist Hollywood would never have let a Republican administration get away with such death and destruction).
A quote from Charles A. Beard would have been an excellent capper for this movie: "It is sobering to reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go around repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence." The Branch Davidians staunchly exercised their 1st Amendment right to practice their freedom of religion. They also vehemently supported the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms and were active traders of firearms at trade shows for profit. This was a dangerous combination in the eyes of the Clinton Administration.
William Gazecki does an outstanding job of putting together the overwhelming case against the various branches of the U.S. Government to show that those who poked their gun muzzles at the Branch Davidians have a lot to hide -- and the stacks and stacks of "missing" evidence from the seige is the smoking gun that cannot be found.
Perhaps David Koresh and the Branch Davidians were strange. Perhaps a few illegal activities occurred on their compound to warrant investigation. But to see the movie's footage of people like U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (then a congressman) and Attorney General Janet Reno intentionally besmirching the victims (and their defenders) on CSPAN with unproven accusations of child abuse and warmongering, only to have mountains of evidence return a damning finger at the ATF, FBI, and U.S. Dept. of Justice as the cause of the unprecedented carnage leaves the viewer sad and afraid of its own democratically elected leaders.
Everything the mainstream press didn't report is here in a video (and it shows them coralled out of view of the seige being spoon-fed the official "government line" from an endless series of high-placed bureacrats, dutifully scribing every word). How it is that multiple governmental investigations couldn't reveal what one devoted documentarist did is even more disturbing than the events itself. This movie isn't just a must-see, it is a must-own.
The movie ends with a few gaps that need filled. But it is important to note a new movie "Waco: A New Revelation" is being released soon. Maybe the Branch Davidians did have a contributory responsibility for the disasterous outcome, but with the almost desperate way the government agencies needed to describe their opponents as "gun-toting, suicidal religious nuts" for the cameras reveals it was vital to suggest the authorities were the Good Guys saving us all from a dangerous cult. However, the movie goes on to interview the local lawmen of Waco who found the Davidians a strange but peaceful bunch. This is the theme of the movie: Hear the government's version, hear the version of those who were there, then present the evidence. The government looks bad every time.
If you don't buy this movie, make the effort to rent it first. I guarantee you'll want to buy it and show it to all who are willing to watch. It's that compelling.

A superhero that only protects children? Awesome.

This is possibly one of the most amazing movies that I have ever seen. The special effects are tremendous, and I was really impressed with how realistic the abduction and strangulation scenes were. Mr. Stranger Danger watch out!
