1929: A Space Odyssey

I had heard of Fritz Lang's WOMAN IN THE MOON for many years and had seen stills from it in sci-fi film anthologies but I was never sure if I would ever get to see it. Now that I have seen it I was totally unprepared for how taken I would be with it. It is absolutely astonishing how forward looking this film was (is). From a technical standpoint it was the 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY of its day. The latest technology of 1929 was used by Lang to depict a trip to the moon 40 years before it actually happened. The attention to detail, always a Lang trademark, is on full display here. German scientists were consulted on the rocket and space sequences and chillingly give us a glimpse of the technology that would be employed by the Nazis during World War II. Even more chilling and prophetic is how the principal heavy is the spitting image of Hitler minus his mustache (and Hitler wanted Lang to be the Third Reich's filmmaker!). In addition to the technological aspects the human side of the story is also quite compelling. There's a love triangle, the crazy dreamer who isn't crazy, a global financial conspiracy and even an unwanted passenger aboard the rocket. Every technical science fiction film or series that follows (THINGS TO COME, 2001, even LOST IN SPACE to name but a few) owe a debt to WOMAN IN THE MOON. The performances are all first rate with Gerda Maurus in the title role and Fritz Rasp as the villain standing out but it's the story and the settings that really shine. This new Kino version restores the film to it's almost 3 hour length and Jon C. Mirsalis' score is simple and extremely effective particularly in the rocket and lunar sequences. Once you see this movie you will be amazed at how many scenes you have seen elsewhere in other movies and TV shows. It's great to finally have the opportunity to see the source material at last... Historical Note: The idea of counting down to zero to launch a rocket comes from this film.

Just a really good movie!

This is a great movie for kids...and adults. We have most of the Disney movies but this is one that my youngest (age 3) will watch over and over. Cruella de Ville is just the villian of all villians. For people who complain about all of the violence in movies today (even kids' movies), this has a very minimal amount of violence. It also has a happy ending which is nice for young children to see in a movie. It's just a really good movie. Why else would they do a re-make with real people?

What else can you say about this film....

Which hasn't been said before. It's a film that Costner should be pround of. He told a story that a large film audience and the Academey of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences liked and was given the oscar for many acheivements. The music score by John Barry is the best that he's ever composed for any film. That's the good news. The bad news is that only this film and Field of Dreams have been any good. The films Kevin has done since then have been completely forgetable.

Rachael LEigh cook is the best part of this movie

This movie would deserve about four stars, that is if Rachaelwasn't in it. It's even good if you put it on mute... you still getto see Rachael! Alright... I'm a bit obsessed with the young actress, but the bottom line is that it's a great movie. DVD makes it even better

Hanks is Brilliant

Forrest Gump is a rare movie that succeeded on all levels. It was a box office smash ranking among the top five highest grossing movies of all time. But it was also a critical darling, garnering across the board praise and a truckload of awards. The movie became a cultural phenomenon, spawning cook books, quote books, a top ten soundtrack album and lines like "stupid is as stupid does" and "life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get" have permeated our dialect. The movie has a nostalgic, feel good vibe thanks to the dimwitted Forrest's trek through 60's and 70's touchstone events. Underneath all those warm feelings lies a darkness. Bad things happen to just about everyone Forrest comes in contact with. His best friend Bubba is killed in Vietnam, his other friend Lt. Dan loses both his legs, his mother dies of cancer and his beloved Jenny dies of AIDS. Even the famous people Forrest comes across meet with disaster, President Kennedy & John Lennon are assassinated, George Wallace is shot and Elvis Presley dies young. There are superb performances all around. Sally Field is feisty as Forrest's mama, Mykelti Williamson is funny as Bubba, Gary Sinese as Lt. Dan is a perfect rough edged foil to Forrest and Robin Wright as Jenny portrays the confusion that young people of the times felt perfectly. While all those performances are of high quality, Forrest Gump is Tom Hanks' tour de force. He is utterly brilliant as Forrest. He is in virtually every scene of the movie and never once does he fail to astound. He becomes Forrest and makes you care what happens to him. Mr. Hanks deservedly won his second consecutive Best Actor Oscar for the role and cemented himself as the best actor of his generation and one of the best of all time.

This is ONE of the funniest stand-up acts you will ever see!! There's only one better than this, and that's Delirious! This man is a comic genius, and also one of the best impersonators I have ever seen before! His Richard Pryor impersonation is DEAD ON and one of the funniest parts! It's about time they released it on DVD and I can't wait to enjoy it again and again. If you're on the fence, trust me, this is well worth your time and effort and money! And if you find this funny, go and get Delirious!! "Hey Boy.....Hey look mighty cute in them come on ova here....and..!" FRIGGIN' HILARIOUS!

The Greatest Comic Book Film Ever Made

The Crow along with the first Superman movie are case studies in how to adapt a comic book story to the screen.
This is a very faithful adaptation to the James O'Barr comic book that even includes sequences directly from the comic book (eg. the scene in the pawnshop). Visually, Alex Proyas tells the story very quickly. I know a lot of filmmakers hate rapid cuts, but in a comic book adaptation, it fits stylistically. Comics are read with that type of pace...going quickly from panel to panel.
It's too bad Brandon couldn't be around to enjoy the success of this film and the launching pad it would have been for his career.

Better than the original!!

What a let down! The Movie Trailers actually showed the best parts, so once I saw the movie I was expecting more. Although the Fathers Retirement Dinner was funny, I found the table chat hard to follow as Eddie ad libbed so much. It was nothing like the first Movie.
