The Friendly Giant gets an Oscar Nod

THE GREEN MILETom Hanks, Michael Duncan Clarke, 1999
Based on a novel by Stephen King, this is a tale of a giant (John Coffey) who is sentenced to death by electric chair after he is found with two murdered young girls. While imprisoned, with the remarkable things he says and miraculous things he can do, he allows the prison gaurds to believe his innocence.
My Review
The makers of this film wanted Tom Hanks and they got him. But who would play the role of John Coffey? I mean who in Hollywood fits the description of a 7 foot tall muscular black man? Bruce Willis had the answer, and he called the director and told him of a bodygaurd of his named MichaelDuncan Clarke. Newcomer Clarke, devoted himself to the role and gave a performance which earned him an AcademyAward nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Fascinating Stuff. History, Drama, Science, It's all there.

This is about as exciting as archaeology gets. The team's struggles with the elements make for great tension and drama. It really feels like an adventure. Unfortunately the computer generated scenes fall well short of Jurassic Park, and they break from the surreal atmosphere of Siberia. But you really cant expect Jurassic Park, can you? Still, I have to give this DVD 5 stars. It has so much to offer, and it totally engrossed me in the adventure. This is a classic.

Best in Years

This IS...and WILL BE...the best movie of 2003. Yes! not only the best horror movie, but....the BEST MOVIE OF 2003. However, I am completely unsurprised by the amount of bad feedback this movie has been given. People seemed to be trapped into their own misunderstanding of what quality cinema is. The top ten grossing movies in 2003 were: Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix Reloaded, Bruce Almighty, X2, Terminator 3, Elf, Bad Boys II, The Matrix Revoluions and Anger Management. People need to get off their butts and go watch movies that actually make you feel emotion. The List is freaking lacking. Cabin fever packs a HUGE punch, a seriously funny/disturbing story line and delivers an insane/comedy/gory/action filled movie. Go see it right the heck now (For your fathers sake). It will own you.

Great film, obviously not for everyone

If you have any passion for the art cinema, any affinity for the French new wave and any tolerance for a non-static camera, then there is a good chance you will like or love Chungking express. To fault this movie for having "no plot"(and by the way, it certainly did have a plot - just not one in the classical hollywood mould) seems quite ridiculous to me. There are many categories of film - hollywood narrative, art cinema and experimental to name a few. Wong Kar Wai is quite obviously attempting to make a film in the tradition of new wave auteurs and independents like Godard and Cassavettes. To fault a film in one category for not living up to the conventions of another is akin to my complaining that a grapefruit doesn't taste much like watermelon or that a documentary about giraffes didn't have any wild boar in it. Do NOT buy or rent CK Express, expecting it to be just like a Tarantino film.

Unique unconventional Masterpiece

One needs to transcend stereotypical mindsets to appreciate fully the depth and the brilliance of this movie. Events in the movie have unexpected finishes, not overly dramatized, with no particular story line (the randomness of real life), and consistently so. All the actors including Julie Andrews look very natural with none of that big star poise and charm and this further adds an aura of reality to the movie. I am not surprised this was not a big hit in Hollywood. But those who can appreaciate this movie will surely find it unique.

ustin vs McMahon-It's worth the money.

This is an excellent look at the feud between Stone Cold and Vince McMahon, from the Raw after the D-Generation X PPV (Stone Cold beating the Rock to retain the IC belt), to the Fully Loaded End of an Era First Blood match. Most of the feud is looked at, like the hospital attack, and Stone Cold taking Vince hostage on the Raw after the Judgement Day PPV. The only thing that keeps it from getting a perfect 5 rating is that it doesn't take a look at all the feud (there's nothing about the parts of the feud between King of the Ring '98 and Breakdown '98, and the Greater Power plot isn't looked at much), but it is still a great buy.

An excellent box set for these all-time greats :)

I've been waiting years and years to see these movies on DVD (and in widescreen), and I'm not disappointed. Superb restorations on all three films. The subtle digital clean-up of a couple of effects in Raiders of the Lost Ark (NOT Indiana Jones and the...) - my personal favorite film ever - was well done, and thankfully nothing else was altered. The Bonus Material disc was good; trailers aren't that interesting to me really, though. Not including a Deleted Scenes segment was a big mistake (sites like have good coverage of those). Now, Lucas: do the same thing with the Original Star Wars Trilogy!
